Welcome! Group Description and Group Rules (below discussions & photos) to better understand our goals with this group. GENTS: please note ONLY IMAGES FROM WOMEN may be posted here. And to all of our wonderful women members, PLEASE ENJOY THE POOL WITH US. We hope it continues to grow, and to reflect our many ways of seeing the world. A pool to inspire us all to keep on keeping on! Civil discussions open for everyone.
Group DescriptionFew Street Photographers, whether they happen to be men or women, give too much thought about their gender when they leave their house with camera in hand. Like with everything else they do in their day, those born with Double X chromosomes know that this biological fact (as with everything else that makes up who they are) is simply part and parcel of the life they lead.
In recent years (especially with the discovery of the incredible trove of unseen and until now unprinted photos by Vivian Maier) there has been more contemplation and conversation about whether there are additional caches of street photography by women who have simply done their work without making big splashes in the field or world at large.
For all street photographers, there are our touchstones, our mentors and giants -- those who have paved the way, and nearly everyone (not just women) point to photographers like Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt, Berenice Abbott, Flo Fox and a more current crop that includes Zoe Strauss, Melanie Einzig and Narelle Autio (to only name a few).
So here we've created a group pool to highlight some current photographers who show work on flickr and we'll have discussion threads soon to also present those who are less contemporary or non-flickr members -- these are street photographers who happen to be female. An archive to view some intriguing photographs and hopefully to become a resource when that nagging question arises 'Where are all the female street photographers?'
We're looking forward to working together with our members to help supply some answers as to Who they are and What they've been doing...
Group RulesPhotos by Female Photographers Only will be accepted or invited to be posted in the pool.
Although both female & male photographers are welcome to become members of this public group, discourse must be kept civil otherwise the offending members will be warned once & banned if continuing to cause a disruption. Also please do not add photos to the queue if you are not female!
Again, the pool will only display photos by our female members so only women can submit photographs to the queue however this is a tightly curated pool, so please don't be offended if your photograph isn't accepted. If you are unsure what to submit, take a look through the pool to see what the curators select.
The term "Street" is an elusive term, and not everyone will agree on what it is or isn't, but... we ask our female members to add photos to the curator's queue which they believe have merit and are what they consider "street".
- This group will count toward the photo's limit (60 for Pro members, 30 for free members)
