Group DescriptionThis group is for pictures of commercial fabrics which have been purposefully altered by bleach or dye.
After reading Malka Dubrawsky's article on combining itajime with commercial fabrics in Quilting Arts (December/January 2009, pages 46-50), I started altering some of the fabrics in my stash to see if I could change colors I didn't like into colors I did.
I find the results fascinating. Today I discharged (fancy word for bleaching!) some of Amy Butler's Midwest Modern Honeycomb in Gray. I did this because I found the fabric too intense--the pink in particular. To my delight, the pink faded almost to white while the gray lightened only slightly and the pukey puce color turned a magnificent mustard. Oh, swoon! Information like this is worth sharing!
Have a some fabric you are overdyeing or discharging? Are you into itajime on commercial fabrics? Document your creations and add your pictures to the group. If at all possible, please include information in the description of the photograph as to what you did. For example: "I added 1 cup bleach to 3 gallons of water, then added the fabric. I let it soak for five minutes, stirring occasionally, then dumped whole bucket (bleach, water, fabric) into washer for a quick wash." This information will help people recreate your results if they want. Before and afters are much appreciated, but not required! Post results you like and those you don't: the point is to show what happens when specific fabrics are treated in one way or another.
Take charge, discharge!
Give it a try, over-dye!
