Group DescriptionThe Carnival Band is a community music project, originally founded by Dan Vie, that has been hosted by Commercial Drive's Britannia Community Centre for more than a decade. Musical direction is currently provided by Ross Barrett and Tim Sars.
Instrumentation for the band includes all manner of brass, woodwinds, drums, percussion, accordions, and of course voice. Stage shows also allow us at times to join our bass, guitar, fiddle, banjo, piano, and keyboard playing friends. Literally hundreds of performers have passed through our ranks over the years.
Many of our favourite tunes are originals by band members. The remainder of our monstrous repertoire includes samba, calypso, swing, afrobeat, jazz, funk, disco, traditional music from around the globe, and fusions thereof that could only happen in Vancouver.
We believe that community music is grounded in collaboration and empowering to each individual involved. Songs and performance are a means to creative expression and to the cohesion of our community, rather than an end in themselves.
If you have a desire to learn and perform, come play with us! Many instruments are available for loan, and many of the band's members teach music professionally. We do this because we love it, and because it makes our neighbors smile.
Rehearsals/workshops take place at the Britannia Community Centre Senior's Lounge 1661 Napier St. at 7:30 p.m. each Monday. Check our website for alternate locales we may use on statutory holidays.
