Oh, I am so happy to hear this. I am starting to get pretty big into portraits (well, mostly with the kids) but would love to see different takes on this - inside and outside the studio, strobes vs natural light... So many great things to talk about here.

Here's a few of my latest:

I always shot portraits with natural available light and i have to say my 50mm f/1,4 Planar does always a great job.

Sorry for the multitude, but I hate to kill my darlings! I prefer un-staged street-portraits.

here is a Lady member of my Camera Club taken when I did a 'Practical Demonstration' of Traditional Darkroom Photography -- I took some portraits using a Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f4 which I got at the Club auction for £ 1-00 on a 1960's PENTAX Spotmatic loaded with outdated Ilford Delta 100 film , processed up and did 10x8" prints with my Durst M305 enlarger -- the lens was TOO SHARP for 'Female Portraits' !!

A few shots from the past few months:

Furesø fisherman
this fisherman was really very friendly, we chatted for the hour or so I were shooting...

© Mike Devlin +45 26117361 - 004
The 100mm Macro Planar is a fantastic lens... tight head-shots need to be approached with a plan of action... this was shot wide-open at f2.0...

© Mike Devlin +45 26117361 - 003
First image from the 100mm Zeiss Makro Planar

_DSC0248w
The 25mm is a great lens for this sort of image, really gets you close to the subject..

_MCD1291w
This is a real “Quick & Dirty" portrait, the subject has a problem with his eyes and cannot tolerate strong light... this was done in the most shady area I could find with a white fill-reflector from below..
The combination of Zeiss optics, Capture 1 RAW Processing and the highly detailed files produced by the Nikon D800 really do a fantastic job together... For me, it is much more practical that what can be done with a medium-format system...

I love this shot (i posted it in the main group too) and it’s a great example of a happy accident. I had a role of 400TMAX in the camera, this was metered for 400. But then i changed the iso to 100 to meter for another camera and never changed it back – so the rest of the role was shot at 100iso. I didn’t quite know what time to develop it for so I left it in for 7.5 min in DD-X. I think it came out great and I learned alot doing it.

I'm interested in hearing from people who've shot both the 100mm Makro and the 85mm Planar which they prefer for portrait work, and why. I currently own the 85, and am considering the 100mm for closer focusing and more sharpness. If you own both, which do you turn to when doing a portrait? Is one better than another for street or studio?
