Hi, I m new to the group.
I use a humble powershot SD600 point and shoot. But then again its not the camera that takes good photos.
Quite a few times I have seen point and shoots taking better looking pics than SLR's.

I have the Canon EOS Rebel XT.

My Christmas present to myself is a zoom lens.
What do you all recommend?

Also, so far I have been only using the built in flash - what's the easiest upgrade from that?

It's super important to me that I keep the weight of what i'm carrying as low as possible, or I won't bring the equipment with me, so please factor that into your advice a bit.

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing how this thread progresses. I am inspired by Flickr to finally get beyond the snapshot phase with my photos.

Hi everyone,

What a fantastic load of kit you have!

I feel slightly embarrassed but i have:
Canon EOS 400D
Standard kit lens 18-55

My wish list for xmas is a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM, however unless a miracle happens that aint gonna happen, hence the reason i have asked a question in another group about a good alternative to that lens for £200--£400..

I have a Canon scan/fax/copy/laser printer that was pretty high end for home office use. Windows 2000 and XP came along and Canon would not write an XP driver, so it is pretty much a boat anchor now so far as connecting to any computer past windows 98. They also held tight to the protocols like they were family jewels so no one else could write a driver for XP or Linux.

That level of support has me concerned about buying a Canon digital camera. What is their history on support there?

I have a Canon AE-1 that still works ok, hasn't needed a repair, and software is not an issue so long as they still make film for it.
slambo_42 11 years ago
There's plenty of support for Canon cameras. Just take the CF card out of the camera, put it in a card reader and it mounts just like another hard drive; works on Windows 98 through Vista and on linux (and I hear on Mac too). If you shoot JPG, it's saved that way. If you shoot RAW, there are many tools (like UFRaw) to convert.

Basically, I shoot with Canon cameras, but I don't use any Canon software on my computers because I don't need to.
kicksonrt66 Posted 11 years ago. Edited by kicksonrt66 (member) 11 years ago
What you're saying is you don't know if there's any support because you haven't needed it.

Imagine you were dependent on, say, the program that lets the computer remote control your 1 year old EOS (like a laboratory situation) and it ends up not working on Vista and Canon just says "Too bad, buy a new camera with Vista compatable software"
That's the kind of support I'm talking about.

hi everyone, like several others I'm pretty new to digital photography and I'm currently using the Canon Powershot A630, which I've had for a couple months, and the Canon Rebel Xti with the 18-55mm kit lens, which I just got for christmas and haven't taken any pictures w/yet. Any suggestions/thoughts/comments on my photostream would be greatly apprecaited as I'm looking to improve my photographs.

Other than that can anyone recommend a good lens to take wildlife and air show pictures with? I've been thinking about the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM but I wanted to get some recommendations before investing any money.

My Canon is old school (film). I have an EOS 1, with a 75-300mm, a 28-90mm and a 20-35mm. My digital camera at work is an Olympus E-20, but I'm hoping to be able to buy my own Canon digital SLR before the year is out. I'd like to get either an EOS 5D or 40D, or a good used EOS 1D. I used to be a sports reporter, so my biggest peeve about a lot of digital cameras is the shutter lag. I'd rather keep my film camera until I can afford a higher-end digital that doesn't have the shutter lag problem. Once I get the quality body, my next step will be to upgrade my lenses so I can shoot wildlife and sports shots without having to worry so much about heavy grain or being able to freeze the action.

Digital P&S (gathering dust):

Current dSLR setup:
17-40 f/4 L
50 f/1.8
35-350 f/3.5-5.6 L

Gear on my wish list (the stuff I think I might actually get):
5D (or successor)
24-105 f/4 L IS (or other new 5D kit lens)
50 f/1.4
85 f/1.8
100 f/2.8 Macro
400 f/5.6 L
430EX or 580EX

Stuff I'll drool over but may not ever buy:
14 f/2.8 L
85 f/1.2 L
70-200 f/2.8 L IS
Canon L's longer than 400mm

WayUpNorth - Canons dSLR's have been beyond the shutter-lag stage for a while. My 20D shutter button responds as fast (if not faster) than my Elan. My P&S cameras are a different matter entirely.

An update on my previous post: I finally got the money together so I could order an EOS 50D to replace my Canon EOS 1 film camera. As much as I would have preferred to buy local, Costco had a sale that was $600 lower than our local supplier, and the Costco deal came with a 28-135mm IS lens. My next purchase probably will be a good, fast sports lens, maybe a good 400mm or so.

Now that I've had a chance to play with it, I'm really enjoying the IS (image stabilized) lens that came with my new camera. I feel like I gain an extra 2-4 f-stops with the IS technology, and now wonder why I never got IS on my earlier lenses. If you can afford it, it pays to buy IS lenses.

I use a Canon 500D, down to the fact that that camera is a bargain when you lay out the features... and that was the first time I've ever had to justify £600.

I've got the standard stock lens of 18-55mm and a Tamron telephoto macro lens, 70-300mm.

This camera is a huge step up for me (I was previously just using a point and shoot with idiot mode on), but I valiantly entered manual mode and taught myself in a few days. I don't think I've stopped taking photos since I got the camera on Sunday. xD

Hi, my name is James and I am a canoholic.

I first started using when i was offered a hit of EOS in the early 90's. Before that I had messed with 'gear' but only recrationally ... Yashica, Lubitel stuff like that.

But one dose of EOS 3 and I became addicted. For 15 years, I managed to keep it under control - I even managed to come off onto a softer substitute (Minolta) for a few years after doing cold turkey when someone stole my 'gear'.

Recently though, my addiction has been spiralling out of control - just look at how much I am using now...

Digital SLR bodies:
* EOS 400D
* EOS 300D

Film SLR bodies:
* EOS 5 + VG-10 vertical grip
* EOS 10 QD
* EOS 50 E + BP-50 battery pack
* EOS 500 N
* EOS 1000
* EOS 3000

Digital Point & Shoot:
* PowerShot ???

Film Point & Shoot:
* Sureshot A1 (underwater)
* Sureshot AF-7
* Sureshot Supreme
* Sureshot MegaZoom 105 Caption

Film Other:
* Canonet (original model, rangefinder camera)
* Epoca 135 (bridge camera)

I won't bore you with the full list of lenses - mixture of Canon and Sigma plus a lensbaby muse and several lumps of "fast glass" via an M42 adapter.

You would think that this much is enough for anyone, but no - I still crave more. I find myself dreaming about scoring some more gear...

* EOS 1D body
* EOS 1N film body
* Canonet QL17 G3
* Demi
* Dial 35
* A-1 body

... I find myself contemplating bank heists to finace my habit ...
* Full set of L series lenses
* Canonex (canon's lens shutter SLR)
* Hansa Canon (first production camera)

... but Iknow I will never reach the ultimate high ...
* KWANNON prototype (none believed to still exist)

Have a Canon PowerShot 630 .. still works even though it was dropped in sand (with the zoom out);
Canon PowerShot SX 20IS .. really like it, but still learning what it can do.

Have a Canon PowerShot A80.. the processor died and haven't been able to locate anyone here that can fix it.
Any suggestions? Know it is old, but was a really good camera!

Still getting used to my first DSLR so not sure what else I'm going to want to get in the future. Probably a flash and maybe a macro lens

This is my first time in this group I just found in a group search.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i digital SLR (owned since October 1st, 2010)

Current Lenses:
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS standard kit lens (owned since October 1st, 2010; was part of camera purchase)
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM telephoto zoom lens (owned since October 1st, 2010; was part of camera purchase)
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM prime lens (owned since December 25th, 2014)

Would like to add this lens:
Canon EF 100mm f/2.0 Macro USM prime lens (ended up changing my mind after deciding the lens I wanted to add wasn't to be smaller than 55mm and not bigger than 75mm for the focal length).

New to the group but use a 7d with a 1 to 400 lens for most of my wildlife work. I do use a wide angle lens for scenery. Between the two lenses they cover most of the outside adventure I can get into. Big bears require distance and wide angles are made for Alasks. Smiles

Got my first Canon SLR camera around the beginning of the month, Canon 1100D (or EOS Rebel T3 as some call it) with the 18-55mm lens it came with. I'm really looking to find a decent price (hopefully no more than 40$, good luck with that, right? lenses are expensive!) macro and telephoto lens. I do alot of Nature Photography, and lately have been into going to some Concerts, and enjoy taking photos of the band. Need a lens that's capable of that immense zoom, and need a lens that's capable of capturing those great flower and landscape shots I so love.
But I'm really In love with my Canon, moreso than I thought I would be.
Photo Quality = Amazing, and It's not too big to hold/handle, either, like some of those Nikon Cameras out there!
