I just had my 24-70mm f/2.8L serviced by the Canon Factory Service Center in Jamesburg, NJ, and I thought I would share the experience with the group.

My 24-70mm, which I bought new, is a little over a year old, and it had developed a crack in the weather seal, as seen here:

It didn't affect my daily use since I rarely shot in rainy weather, but I thought I should get it fixed, especially considering I never had such a problem with my 17-40mm f/4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.

I called the Canon Factory Service Center in NJ (+1.732.521.7007), but they couldn't give me a quote over the phone, so I paid a visit. It's about 40 minutes from where I live.

It was a Friday afternoon and raining, but the people were very friendly. They decided that they would fix the problem for free, even though it's out of warranty. Otherwise something like that could be covered with a flat service fee, which is $95 for this lens.

It would take no more than 10 working days. So I dropped off the lens. 5 days later I got a call from Canon, and they told me my lens was ready. So I went to pick up the lens. It turns out, besides replacing the split seal, they also calibrated the focus (not that I noticed any problem) and cleaned it. Here is the first shot testing the focus. It looks spot on to me.

The Service Center also provides sensor cleaning service for free while you wait.

Overall, I'm very impressed by the service.
