Lens choises?

geek_kitten PRO 12:40pm, 12 June 2006
Hi, I'm not a 5D owner yet, but will be soon. However, I still need to decide on what lens to get. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two, the
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS. Now, I'm leaning towards the first one, mainly because I do a lot of photography indoors, in less than optimal lighting conditions, also I'm not sure I like the IS that much (although, I haven't really had much chance to test it). However, the 24-105 is cheaper, you can get it as a kit lens, which makes it an even better deal, and it is that much longer, which could come in handy. If I got the 24-70, I would probably be looking into getting another one at some point in the future, maybe the 70-200mm f/2.8L, but I really have no idea when I could afford it. : /

Any views on which one would be the ideal one-covers-all-lens? Which would you choose, or not choose, to go with the 5D?

Help!

For Me it's hands down the 24-70mm f/2.8L... I do lots of indoor photography and do lots with available light so I need the f/2.8 the f/4 just isn't fast enough sometimes.

Also Image Stabiliztation doesn't help subject motion blur at all. So if your taking photos of people, etc. the IS is almost useless in low light.

The 24-105mm is a nice walk around lens I guess, but it's not for me.... I read the reviews on both... There are lots of threads in the Canon DSLR user group that talk about these lenses.

I bought my 24-70mm L just after the 24-105mm L came to market. I researched both but ultimately chose the 24-70mm L because I needed the larger aperture for indoors shots and didn't need the extra reach because I have a 70-200mm f/2.8.

i always prefer large aperture as i do not use flash... no reason for me to go for f/4 lens! :P

The 24-70mm f2.8L is on my main rig a high percentage of the time. Canon L glass, and 2.8 or higher aperture were epiphanies for me the moment I looked thru the viewfinder.
