This thread will show photos of MC bunnies. there seems to be a direct correlation between the colour and patternation of bunnies and Megacolon.

At first it seems strange to think the colour and patterns of a bunny's fur can help diagnose megacolon: a gut condition. That is until you realise it can be genetic in origin - and genetics affect the markings.

beau is a classic example of a genetic megacolon En En type bunny with the usual colour and patternation.

these bunnies tend to be mainly white with dark spots (which can sometimes be brown or orange as well as lilac or black), a broken line down the spine, broken butterfly on the nose, dark eye rings, all thought to be variations on the english spot type. these photos shows all the markers.

however, bunnies can have MC from acquired causes too in which case the colours can be anything at all.

NOT MEGACOLON BUNNIES : extremely closely related. or visually similar bunnies like clint (or snowy) who both are white in part with darker spots, but who are more colour blocked at their hind quarters and have unbroken nose butterflies, can be completely unaffected by megacolon and not have the gene that causes it.

[clint, non mega colon but full sibling to one.]
clint, non megacolon but full sibling to beau.

snowy, unrelated to both, similar in markings but again NOT a megacolon bunny.

photo that compares clint's markings to beau's - basically a lot more colour on her.

[photo for comparison: NON mc vs mc bun.]

Horatio classic megacolon colouration, and while his mc is not as full blown as Beau's was, it has we believe been there since birth, tempered a bit by moss' s healthy gut.

Hey Dani

I am so glad to see this as I have long suspected that harvey had MC and that that was behind his constant illnesses.

Its good to see that my instincts were right!

brg i am relieved to know this too because it explains a lot for harvey. you do get those constant gut problems and repeat stasis in these bunnies. i only wish i had known more about it back then and we could have helped more. it's been a long learning curve for us all. but thanks to beau, i think bunnies to come, like horatio and others will benefit. i'm sorry we couldnt learn more about it early enough to help harvey though. we have a dedicated facebook group for megacolon bunnies linked to this site too if you ever know anyone who needs help and advice, please send them over to us here or there. www.facebook.com/groups/megacolonbunnies/
