Group DescriptionThe Bloomington Communications Group is comprised of volunteer amateur radio operators. The BCG's served agencies are the Bloomington Police Department and Bloomington Fire Department. The members provide the Police and Fire Departments with additional communications during special community events, such as Summer Fete, National Night Out and River Rendezvous. You can learn more about these events by visiting our Community page.
The Bloomington Communications Group operates a Skywarn Center that is located in the Bloomington Police Department. Throughout the spring and summer, the group is on-call; ready to report for duty should damaging storms threaten. During severe weather, Skywarn Spotters from across the metropolitan area report weather observations to the Bloomington Skywarn Center via amateur radio. BCG volunteers relay these reports to the U.S. Weather Bureau located in Chanhassen. Weather spotter observations provide details that cannot be detected with radar and other weather-monitoring devices.
The Bloomington Communications Group also provides emergency communications when phone and other communication modes are not functioning or are unable to meet the needs. Each member of the group uses their equipment and volunteers their time.
