Just wondering if it would be of interest for the group to have new additions to the pool, birds new to the group that is, posted here.
It would certainly be useful to have more have a look and add corrections if necessary.
Contributions for the year posted here for starters.

Using this query there would appear to be 996 species added this year. Could be a long thread!

It would still be good to have a recent new species thread.

Guess 996 is rather too long a thread. Recent fnwnewbird would be a better idea then, Here's one for starters:

Just to let you know about my making work for you Alistair ... I am preparing for an upcoming trip to Peru. I am finding that there are a LOT of photographs of neotropical birds on Flickr that are not represented in our pool.

I am inviting them as I search the birds on my potential checklist and
In order to minimize 'make work' for other admins, I am asking the contributors for the proper tags and visiting the pool of invitees daily to be sure they are properly tagged.

Unfortunately, I cannot add the FBW:newbirds to the index! Also, I will admit that I am not taking the time to check the scientific names I have on my checklist against Clements 5th. Sorry, but I just do not have the time to do this, as Avibase is just too balky and slow.

If you want me to cease and desist with the invitations, I will surely do so, on that basis.

I am also making invitations where there are only one or two photos in the pool or when there is a particularly spectacular photo, but that should not be making work, as I am making sure they are tagged according to the index.

Alastair Rae PRO 9 years ago
Carol,

Don't worry about the tagging. For a new bird (or a good shot where we only have a record shot) the invite is enough. I'm always happy to tag a new species when they accept the invite.

Have a great trip,
Alastair.

I see we're creeping up on the 6000 species mark. Maybe we'll hit it by the end of the month.
admin
Alastair Rae PRO 8 years ago
Actually, todays count of 5993 on here doesn't include the handful of new taxa (post Clements, not splits) which are in the pool but not in the index. All oddities without a proper Clements binomen are marked as FBW:Checked and a few that new birds that have just come in. So I reckon we must be over 6000 already.
Glen Tepke PRO 8 years ago
Congratulations to all the hard-working FBW admins and contributors who have put the group over the 6,000 mark. We can celebrate again when the 6,000 figure actually appears in the index. ;-)

I was impressed to see in the FBW:Checked pool a photo of Sincorá Antwren, a species that wasn't described until 2007. But it illustrates one of the drawbacks to using a static taxonomy for keeping the group's list - the species will never be included in the list because it is not included in the Clements 5th Ed. taxonomy. So is it legitimate to include it in the group's species count? I'm not criticizing, just pondering.

Glen
admin
Alastair Rae PRO 8 years ago
I think it might be legit to add these new taxa to our Clements list so they appear in the dynamic index. It's easy to add new stuff - it's renaming, spliting and lumping that cause the headaches.
admin
Dave Appleton PRO 8 years ago
I agree - if it's a previously undescribed species then it makes sense to include it. I think that can be justified on the basis that had the species been described in time then Clements would have included it as a species. That's the principle I've applied in the hyperlink index. On the same principle I've treated the newly described Diamantina Tapaculo as a subspecies of Mouse-colored Tapaculo - it's been described as a full species but the other related forms that were already described were treated as subspecies in Clements 5th, so it seems logical to assume that this one would have been treated as a subspecies too if it had been described then.

The newly described taxon that I've included in the hyperlink index are:
- Sincora Antwren
- Togian White-eye
- Gray-crowned Tyrannulet
- Sao Francisco Sparrow

There are a few other differences between the hyperlink index and Alastair's, down to the fact that I have slightly more control of the hyperlink index whereas Alastair's is so brilliantly automated:

- The following ARE in the pool but not in Alastair's index because they've also been tagged (first) with an alternative taxonomic treatment. In some cases this is only the trinomial but the trinomial is apparently enough for Alastair's clever pool-sweeper to pick them up and once it's found one species in the tags it doesn't look for a second.
- Pale-blue Monarch
- Yellow-rumped Flycatcher
- Gray-headed Whistler
- Canary Islands Kinglet
- Yellow-breasted Brush-Finch
- The following ARE in the pool but don't come up on Alastair's index. Not sure why but they're relatively new so maybe the sweeper hasn't got to them yet?
- Line-cheeked Spinetail
- Boran Cisticola
- The following are NOT in the pool but come up on Alastair's index because they've been tagged (first) with a taxonomic treatment that differs from Clements. In some cases this is only the trinomial which means they don't get found when you click on the link.
- Amazonian Royal Flycatcher Onychorhynchus coronatus (one of three Northern Royal Flycatchers is tagged Onychorhynchus coronatus mexicanus)
- Gray Whistler Pachycephala simplex (our only Gray-headed Whistler is tagged with this alternative taxonomic treatment)
- Forest Rock-Thrush Pseudocossyphus sharpei (one of two Benson's Rock-Thrushes is tagged with this alternative taxonomic treatment)
- Bolivian Brush-Finch Atlapetes rufinucha (our only Yellow-breasted Brush-Finch is tagged with this alternative treatment)
- The following are NOT in the pool but appear in Alastair's index because tags remain from a misidentification (I think):
- Buff-breasted Babbler Pellorneum tickelli (actually an Abbott's Babbler but I'm reluctant to remove them from the pool as they're such good examples of that species)
- Sooty Albatross Phoebetria fusca (actually a Light-mantled Albatross I think but as I'm not experienced with either I've not removed it pending confirmation).
- The following do NOT seem to be in the pool but appear in Alastair's index. I'm not sure why - perhaps they were once in the pool but have now been removed, or re-identified, and the sweeper hasn't caught up?
- Stripe-crowned Spinetail Cranioleuca pyrrhophia
- Yellow-throated Woodpecker Piculus flavigula
- There are two more species that have just been added (and tagged FBW:newbird so I could pick them up) but not yet picked up by Alastair's index: Banded Cotinga and Short-tailed Swift.

Finally there are two other species that appear in Alastair's index but not the hyperlink index, both because I'm waiting confirmation as to which species they are as the common name contradicts the scientific name. In the case of the White-eye it's a new species either way (Black-fronted or Black-crowned) but the Tailorbird will only get added if it's confirmed that it's Olive-backed not Ashy.

Bearing all this in mind there are 5996 species in the hyperlink index so with the addition of the White-eye and perhaps the Tailorbird there are, by my calculations, 5997 or 5998 species in the pool. So the 6000th is imminent...!
Glen Tepke PRO 8 years ago
I may have enough new species remaining from my Kenya trip to put you over the top. Depends on where you want to draw the line on quality. I have some very poor shots of Nyanza Swift and Scarce Swift, worse than my Northern Pied Babbler above. I saw them well enough with bins to be comfortable with the ID, but I don't think one could definitively ID them from just the photos. Maybe the Nyanza Swift. I put them at the end of the queue to process in the hope someone else would post better shots before I got to them. Do you have a standard for how good a photo has to be before you will add a new species to the index?

Glen
admin
Dave Appleton PRO 8 years ago
Well, we'd certainly be more lenient for new species and some we've kept in the past have been really on the limits of acceptability. On the other hand I have drawn the line with one of two where they were so poor that you really couldn't make out anything useful at all. Difficult to say without seeing the images but with something like a Swift I'd have thought a photo that shows the silhouette would be potentially useful for someone to refer to when researching the ID. I know when I was struggling over possible Scarce Swifts at Mulanje (Malawi) I would have benefitted from comparing some silhouettes of Scarce Swift with juvenile Palm Swifts.
Glen Tepke PRO 8 years ago
OK, I will take another look at them and decide if I they are post-worthy, even with the bar set low. But I probably won't have time to work on photos again until next week, so someone else is likely to jump in and put us over 6,000.

Glen
admin
Hi Folks
I have just added two shots of Swifts to my pool. A Scarce and a Nyanza.
Haven't put them on before for similar reasons to Glen.

I find all-dark Swifts a bit of a nightmare and bow to local knowledge for ids. I think the identities are safe here unless someone can say categorically otherwise.

take a look and if you are happy I will add them to FGBW.
Cheers
Martin.

I have made several invites from my South American ornith contacts lately of iffy quality photos, but all identifiable. I was thinking that as these species get better represented we could eventually delete the relatively bad ones, but my philosophy (still a newb) wb to include newbird and even poorly represented species if the view at all resembles the view one might get in the field and the photographer is reliable ... the invites I have made are photos from LSU ornithologists.

Does anyone disagree?
admin
Alastair Rae PRO 8 years ago
Well, we bumped over 6000 without any tweaking of the list.

As per Dave's analysis above, I've tweaked the dynamic indexing. I now have an 'override' list to bypass the normal tag scan for a small set of photo ids eg:
601377757:Hypothymis puella
2842515217:Myiobius mastacalis
2096692431:Pachycephala griseiceps
3292760275:Regulus teneriffae
3883081953:Atlapetes latinuchus

I have started a new thread: Index anomalies for discussing individual photos.
