Thanks for checking out Bike Racks (the things to which you attach a bike, not the things you attach to a bike). Leave comments, share thoughts.

Don't forget to include the location of the rack.

If in Portland, there is a Google Map started to locate some of the more interesting racks.

Group Description

Some of the best art projects I had in high school and college were when every one was given the same topic or object, and it usually was not exciting, and the challenge was to see what people did with those constraints. In that vein, what art or awareness can you create with bike racks as the topic?

WHAT: A Flickr Group for bike racks of any sort, from any where; whether a city rack or one in your neighbor's yard; ubiquitous "staple" all around a metro area, or a creative one that boarders on sculpture. BIKE RACKS on which bikes are placed, not bike racks which are placed on bikes.

WHY: With the advent of a greater number of people using bikes for transportation, the need for more bike racks has occurred. This is great for those who are creative. There is the "standard, upside down U" shape bike rack, but some people have taken the need for a bike rack as a need to create a utilitarian sculpture. The purpose of this group is to catalogue and share this bike culture.

HOW: Bike rack photos can be (1) an "object shot" to share the neat shapes of racks out there, (2) an "artsy" shot of a bike rack, and (3) whatever else you have figured out. There is no penalty for the appearance of a bike in the photo, even if the bike has a greater presence than the rack.

A same-shot, different photographers is fine, even encouraged. One photographer may take a photo of the rack as an object, another of the rack with just a portion of the rack in the photo. Both cool. One artsy, but not showing the full rack. The other showing the full rack, but maybe not with such vibrant colors. It is all good.

PLEASE include the city and state in which the rack resides and if you can, go one step further and include cross streets or post on Flickr map so that others looking for the rack can find it.

If you want to include who the artist/creator/company of the bike rack is, please do so. If they have a web site, you can post that as well.

Thanks. Enjoy,
