Just Bento website, Daiso opening in London

I came across an interesting new blog. Just Bento is from the creator of Japanese food blog Just Hungry, and focuses on speedy diet bentos for adults, mostly vegetarian, with recipes and tips. I especially like her graphic timelines that illustrate the recipes. I've seen these in Japanese-language bento cookbooks before, and they bring an easy-to-grasp glanceability to the lunch prep and packing process. Although Just Bento is new, it looks promising and I'm all in favor of her premise of speedy, streamlined bento prep of delicious food. Dig in!

Just Hungry also points out that Daiso, the big Japanese dollar store chain, will be opening a new branch in London on November 17th with Japan Centre, at 213 Piccadilly. Full details here at Just Hungry.

I know the place, it's not huge but I guess it would do for the moment. It's also overpriced at the moment- they have a very small selection , I am hoping they will come down in price.

I can't get the Just Bento website to load. It keeps cycling back and forth between justbento.com and justhungry.com without actually loading either. :(

Thank you for linking to my new site Biggie! I haven't really posted many pictures that I have already posted on my food site(s) on flickr before, but I will try to do so.

Regarding the new Daiso, my understanding from talking to the Japan Centre folks is that it is indeed a new store, at 213 Piccadilly (the existing Japan Centre is at 212). I won't be able to make it to the opening but I'm planning to visit there really soon (I wish visiting London wasn't so expensive! There are limits to the budget for bento supply spending :))

Obiwan, sorry about the site problems...it got hit with a lot more traffic earlier than I had anticipated over the weekend, and the server hiccuped. It should be okay now (fingers crossed)

Do you have any idea how happy this makes me, or how embarrassed I am to be so excited?!

I can't be there for the opening but I am definitely going to London on 21st Nov. Hopefully I will spot some goodies!

Although £1.45 would be really expensive considering that Daiso stores in Singapore sell items for S$2 (less than £0.70) and, from what I've heard, in the US for US$1 to $2(around £0.50 to £1).

I like the idea of a meet up for European bento addicts lol.

In the US, The basic Daiso price is $1.50. In Canada (there's a Daiso in Richmond near Vancouver in British Columbia), it's $2.00, so I hope that the UK daiso won't charge £1.45 as the standard.

I know that someone here will post about it once it has opened and we can get the full story.

The Japan Centre stuff for Daiso is stupidly overpriced, I hope they sort that out if they do a new store! I bought a pan from them which was Daiso and it was £3! I did reason it'd cost me that much if I shipped it from Japan myself, but still. Their tableware is a bit more reasonable because they did 3 for 2 on it at one point.

I think it would be possible a visit to Daiso in London would kill me, anyway. :D

There is a great crockery/kitchenware shop called Utsuwa-No-Yakata and cheap shop (sells most things for 1£) at oriental City in Colindale, London NW.

Only tenuously related (but on the Japanese retail theme) I just read that they are also opening a Uniqlo, a clothing shop that has good basic clothes and a few household items, in London. I don't think I've ever seen bento stuff there, but you never know when they open versions of foreign shops in other countries what they will stock.

Oh Uniqlo - yes i have seen it before here but I have only seen clothes - not crokery or anything like that and the sizes are tiny - I am a big girl, you see :)

The problem is the price - because if you want to satisfy your Japanese cravings you could go to Muji, but once again it's very expensive....and they have only one bento - white - :(

I'm popping to the press launch of the new shop on Thursday, hopefully, so I'll let everyone know what happens. (I work for a magazine here in the UK so I'm covering the event, which is why I'm going!) I spoke to the PR today and they told me most Daiso items will be on sale for £1.45 - the reason being that they have to ship the items in themselves rather than having Daiso do it.

From what I hear, the new shop is going to look ace, and the layout sounds good too.

Well, the press event was fun, and the new shop looks fantastic! However, it's not really a Daiso branded effort - the range is definitely better than before, but it's definitely not a Daiso. They're selling Daiso stuff, but they did that already in the old shop.

As for bento stuff, there's very little. But I did get told they're ordering bento accessories in the next shipment - the woman who works there told me she's aware of all the bento sites online! The downside is that it's going to take three months for the shipment to get here by boat...

What bento stuff they do have isn't Daiso, so it's very expensive. I saw a bento on display in a glass cabinet and it was over £16.00. It did look nice though, it's the same one on their site at the moment (www.japancentre.com)

The most exciting thing is definitely the hot and cold takeaway they're putting in - they've expanded their fridge units and even put in a hot cabinet too. That was all closed down when I was there, though.

As for what they've done with the shop: the bookshop has moved to a larger place downstairs, the travel agent is in a different room to that, the food place is an entire first floor to itself, and the Tokko restaurant is now two floors occupying the old building. Apparently, the row of shops they're on belongs to the Queen, and they haven't got planning permission yet to knock through to the old building, so it's two separate bits.

I went to the Japan Centre a few weeks ago after reading Biggies post which was much appreicated by the way :) And her blog is AWESOME!!

Sadly the Japan Centre was a huge dissapointment. Their Bento range was about 2ft by 3ft space filled mostly with loads and loads of Daiso Bento Boxes in Blue and Orange (no red ones). They had a few mini Tamagoyaki frying pans and mini woks (very cute), some aluminium cups sizes #8 and #10 and some non-bento items in the same area. When I asked if they would have any more bento items coming in soon the staff (who were quite unhelpful) said they had no idea.

I keep thinking that Oriental City is worth a visit but its so far from where I am that I can't really be bothered...!

Ebay is working out fine, though they are charging loads for teeny weeny items... Can't wait to visit San Fran, will be stocking up on loads of bento items when I do...

I was at JapanCen a few months back and they had lots of cool bento things, my friend went this weekend and came back with some animal sauce bottles and cute coloured paper cups, they were pretty cute!

When I asked them about their bento stuff they said they sold out really quickly so I guess that's why you didn't see much :(

Hi Han Chan81, thank you for getting back on this one. OK, that's some good news for me then, I will trek down this friday and give some feedback on what I found. Hopefully they will have some good stock again... Thanks again :)
