Early Sightings

lovingwonderfulnature 4:18pm, 3 March 2011
Have you seen any early sightings?

I saw a bee on the 12th February, a wasp or a hornet on 20th of January and i saw a nursery web spider today (3rd March) when it says that they are seen in May-July

Saw my 1st butterfly of the year (also an overwintered comma) on 2/3/11. Didn't get a photo :-(

My 1st adder this year was yesterday (3/3/11). It was the first time I've looked this year so comparisons are fairly meaningless but last year's 1st was 1 March and 2009's, from memory, was a few days earlier, i.e. end of Feb. Here's a photo of 1 of 2 specimens spotted yesterday

Got my first Bumblebee shots of the year today. I saw at least three of them around the same area :-)

Painted ladies have been reported in Cornwall since the 20th Feb so mine is not exceptional.
Having lived in Scilly for over 50 years I feel quite confident in identifying a Painted Lady. :-)
The one I saw today was very pale and these late winter/early spring migrants are thought to be a race from North Africa rather than the near continent.

It's a collection of photos, tweets and comments from right here all abut the arrival of spring.

That is a good early date for a singing Blackcap. The wintering Blackcaps are mostly from Eastern Europe ( proved by ringing recoveries) rather than our own breeders which winter in Iberia and Africa. Birds that migrate tend not to sing much on wintering grounds as this is wasteful of energy and exposes the bird to predation, so mostly singing Blackcaps in Britain dont start until our breeders return in April. Probably a winterer triggered to sing by sudden cvhange in weather.

This afternoon there seems to be an emergence of male Brimstone Butterflies. Have seen at least seven in two hours in South Bedfordshire. Resident woodland birds all singing and displaying. Havent yet seen any summer migrants, but Chiffchaff and Sand Martin have both been reported in the county, and a Northern Wheatear in Herts.

Your assertion may well be true of birds which have only in recent years started to overwinter in other parts of the UK. However here in Scilly things are a little different. We have for several years had both male and female Blackcaps recorded in all months and I am quite sure they are resident non movers.
I well remember doing a BTO winter bird count in about 1980, on Jan 1st and we were the only place to record Blackcap in the entire UK.
