Group DescriptionThe London borough of Barking and Dagenham was created in the 1965 local government reorganisation out of the separate boroughs of Barking and Dagenham. This amalgamation is still apparent as Barking has a town hall and Dagenham has a similar structure but called the Civic Centre.
The modern borough also includes the part of Chadwell Heath not included in Redbridge as well as Marks Gate to the north of Chadwell Heath.
In the south the borough is very industrial and fronts on to the River Thames but riverside access is now very limited. In the north the borough touches the green fields of Fairlop plain and Collier Row and includes at least one working farm.
Dagenham is still dominated by the Ford Motor Company, although its work force and importance is sadly diminished. Barking is a busy shopping and commercial centre but still has traces of the historic abbey where William the Conqueror spent the night after his coronation in 1066.
