Feed.

Since much of the conversation in here lately seems to have been about examining the different angles from which the apocalypse can be approached, I thought I'd plug an excellent book I'm reading, called Feed--which so far is probably one of the best zombie books I've read.

The idea behind Feed is that a few years from now, mankind discovers cures for both cancer and the common cold--but that the two, when mixed, produce a new virus called Kellis-Amberlee (named after the creators of the two cures), which causes dead mammals with sufficient body mass to animate after death, seeking only to feed in order to produce more of the virus. Everyone is infected, but only convert after death or being exposed to an active strain of the virus (e.g. direct biological contact with a zombie, such as being bitten). The world is divided into zones rated for their danger, where 10 is a completely safe walled and patrolled neighborhood and 1 is a no-go zone where anything moving is shot on sight.

Most of those concepts are pretty well-traveled in zombie lore. What sets this book apart is its examination of what happens to society when the world doesn't end--when laws and culture have had several decades to adapt to zombies being a fact of life, and that anyone who dies becomes one. It's given me a lot of ideas.

The book has a brilliant web site to go along with it, and the site alone is good for some inspiration. You can read the first chapter there, too.

Thanks for posting this; I just finished The New Dead and could use another zombie fix. And from reading a bit from the site, I'm getting some ideas.

It sounds great! My favorite zombie book is World War Z. Have you read that book? If not you have to read it?

Not to be too much of a necroposter, but I must mention that Feed is fantastic, completely unexpected, and surprisingly original. It was one of my favorite novels of the past six months.
