Some say the world will end in fire, but I say it will end in ice.

The goal of this contest is to depict the end of the world as it is crushed beneath a new ice age. The catalyst is up to you, whether it's nuclear winter, the sun slowly burning out, or any other circumstance. The point is, everything's all snowy all of a sudden.

So how do people react? Do children build snowmen from ash-streaked snow under a grey sky? Do the last ragged remnants of society huddle around a fire in the lifeless wastes? Do former businessmen go skiing past their old places of work in the canyons of a former metropolis?

There's no prescription for theme or style, but a major component of the scores will be based on originality. We've all seen heavily outfitted super-troopers marauding around, bashing in the skulls of zombies. Let's try something a bit different.

The rules, in handy bullet-point form!
-Entry must be at least 16x16 studs.
-Due by midnight, March 31st.
-Snowy.

Judges are Robby and myself.

Prizes!
First Place:
You get a trophy!
Blood in the Snow by [Carter]

Second Place:
An assortment of Brickarms, including prototypes and special colors, generously donated by Will Chapman!

Third Place:
Also an assortment of Brickarms, but not as awesome as what second place gets.

Now get building!
Crimson Wolf 7 years ago
Ooh! Very exciting! I haven't built anything apocalego in quite some time.
It'll give me an excuse to actually make time to build something with my hectic schedule.
Sounds like a very interesting contest. You say it ends on Midnight
March 31st. My question is whose midnight. Pacific, Mountain, Central or Eastern. Thanks for the help.
Tekka Croe 7 years ago
Oh ho, this sounds right up my alley.
Kitten Krieger 7 years ago
My entry, my first apocalego so cut me some slack, but honestly tell me how I did.

"Uh control, what the hell am I looking at?"
Every year a group of scientists come from the underground colony "Refuge" to see if any of the snow has melted. This year it still has not. But the scientists have made a strange discovery, a lifeforms that does not require food it gets nutrients from the sun. This life form was presumed extinct 590 years ago.

One last question can you have more than one entry?

The contest was announced 2 hours ago, how can you already have an entry?

No, only one entry.
Bob Thou Monkey [deleted] 7 years ago
Do you get Brickarms(apart from the chain-blade)
aswell as the trophy, for first place?
It looks like you get a least 8 proto bayonets aswell.
Kitten Krieger 7 years ago
@ Robbyem I don't know, just cranked it out real fast, talk about a power build.
Lego Junkie. PRO 7 years ago
Can you use brickarms?
Do the baddies have to be zombies? or can they be say a pack of mutant trash cans?
z the lego man 7 years ago
is there a size restriction ?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
To answer some questions;

No height limit, and no outer size limit. It just has to have a footprint over 16x16 studs.

One entry per person, but you can change your entry if you build something later that you like more.

Still talking to Will, first place may get a prize beyond just the trophy.

Brickarms are allowed (as I hope would be implied from having them in the trophy and distributing them as prizes). Please reread the rules for any clarification regarding conflict, enemies, etc. It's laid out pretty clearly.
Bob Thou Monkey [deleted] 7 years ago
Ah thanks! I decided what I'm building!

Note*

For the purpose of keeping this thread cleaner and shorter, can we keep the "this sounds cool," "i might have to try this," and other frivolous posts to a minimum? I just remember looking at the old 3 page contest threads where the vast majority of the posts were pointless.

EDIT:

Begun cleaning out some posts, nothing personal, they are just unnecessary.
Brian Rinker 7 years ago
May i suggest a entrents thread? that way there all organized into one thread to keep it clean?
KingBrick 7 years ago
^That sounds wise.
Edborstein 7 years ago
Does this have to be life during the "snow-pocalypse", or can it be during a thaw, as the snow melts?
Kirk0007 7 years ago
I'd like to enter this one. I've always had a hatred of snow that cuts down to my basic sense of life. Snow is a stopper on all productivity, and cold is a stopper on life itself. Winter, coldness, and snow, are all very deep themes and I hope I (as well as the others who enter) will be able to produce a creation that does the theme justice and shows a bit of symbolism.
Catsy [CC] PRO 7 years ago
This has given me inspiration that broke three weeks of builder's block. Bless you.

Would it be alright if we uploaded WIP pictures? I'm not sure if this is allowed or not.

Thank you.
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
Yes, that is allowed.

For the people who already uploaded entries, the idea was to take time and build high quality entries, that's why we gave you until March 31.

Also, a dio is required(16x16 at least)
Grassy. 7 years ago
I have a quick question. Could this dio be from a scene in a movie?(ex. Day after tomorrow)
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Edborstein: That's fine, as long as the emphasis remains on snow/frigidity. Creativity trumps straight and narrow contest regulations.

@Big gunner: No reason why not, but remember that the largest component here is originality.
Milo _Z Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Milo _Z (member) 7 years ago
i have an entry thats almost done, it was a 4 hour-straight power build, but hopefully by tomorrow i should have a good finished model.

i'm assuming hight also has no limit, as i've made the building, roughly 40 studs high, so, i hope thats ok.
Edborstein 7 years ago
If we enter one entry, then later decide we want to take it out, and enter a different one, are we allowed too? Or is it that once you enter, you can't replace it?
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
Carter already answered this one, but yes, you may change it.
bermyskier1235 7 years ago
I'll "revise a Vignette I'm working on going with Edborstein's idea (if you don't mind Edborstein).
Edborstein 7 years ago
Go ahead, Bermyskier1235, Nice to know I inspired you!
(Ryan) 7 years ago
One question, can you use an editing program to add stuff like falling snow?
admin
[Carter] Posted 7 years ago. Edited by [Carter] (admin) 7 years ago
@Diego: if it successfully conveys the idea of apocalypse, I don't see why not. If it just looks like any other castle scene, except maybe a little more dismal, then you're not going to have a great shot at winning. Originality is paramount here.

@Rogue Pyro: editing programs are fine.

NikC4 7 years ago
Is it okay to post a vig already posted for something else, but that has had some major modifications done since it was last posted anywhere? I pile all of my bricks into one giant vig about 3 feet by 1 foot by 1 and a half feet, and I don't have any good colors left for anything else.
diegoboy 7 years ago
BTW, can the picture of the entry be a "scene", rather than a picture of the whole vig, for example Catsy's entry. I mean maybe like this kind of photo:
Priority Warning: Artificial Attack Unit reported. by diegoboy

That's fine, as long as it's clear it's larger than 16x16

We're looking for original creations for this contest. If you want to modify an old diorama, feel free, but it may hurt your chances of winning.
Lego Junkie. PRO 7 years ago
Does it have to be bloody?
People keep saying that mine needs to be.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
Nope! Sorry for the misleading contest name; we'd rather see originality; in post apoc, that means less violence is more.
Lego Junkie. PRO 7 years ago
Ok thanks!
PhiMa' 7 years ago
Does the ice necessarily need to be after our time, or could it be perhaps before ours? So, could we see pirates, knights, etc. going through the new ice age?

That Lego Kid 7 years ago
I noticed a few people now have posted entries that are a few figs posed in real snow, without a dio. I don't think those qualify, but I'm not sure. Just putting this out there, so no one gets there hopes dashed by a last minute disqualification.

Perhaps one of the judges could clarify?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
Yes, by '16x16 footprint', we meant on Lego, not on some other media.
Ribbitz 7 years ago
So... Does that 16x16 have to be filled in?
ExoBuilder 7 years ago
does there have to be snow?

Could my question be answered?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
It was already addressed further above. In short, the time period can be up to you, but it has to successfully convey an apocalypse.
NotHONSOU 7 years ago
I've started work on my entry (brainstorming ideas) but does it have to have a proper back-story? I'm not asking because I'm lazy with my writing, I'm just wondering if its a necessity to our entries.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
Nope, backstories are unnecessary.
PhiMa' 7 years ago
Ah. My apologies. I missed that.

Ạlǝx 7 years ago
You know, I've got a pretty good idea, and I'm not much of an Apoc builder, but I'll see if I can build something nice to enter.
bionicbadboi 7 years ago
There are arctic areas without snow as well, say a high-altitude wind-blown rock desert, perhaps with patches of snow. I guess it takes some thought to convey the cold, though. Maybe go for all cold hues for the ground, then make whatever is the focus have one or more warm hues.
Fettman317 7 years ago
Can the entry be digital lego?

I'm ashamed of the picture quality here, but hopefully it will suffice for the curious. First place is the row on the left, followed by second in the center and third on the right. Bayonets are in groups of five.

If you want to thank Will Chapman for his generosity in providing these, go spend some money at BrickArms!

I'm very sorry but I don't think I'll be entering this contest. I've had a WIP sitting around on my table for the past 2 weeks, but life has gotten in the way of my Lego hobby.
