We all know what a bunch of individualists this group is, but that's too bad, because we're standardizing things! Everyone's viewed the pictures of Rob Gurney's amazing Post-Apoc setup at BrickFair; now's the time to make it a community-wide project. To that end, we have a format and prizes to encourage you to build to it's specs.

The Contest Itself:

Build a Street module and a Building module. Enter by March 15th. It's very straightforward.

Street Module:

Roads are intended to be built on a single 32x32 baseplate, and are to be 2 bricks thick with another 2 plates and a tile below to add support. The roads consist of 12 black bricks, with a yellow stripe one plate thick running through the middle. To fill your desperate need for creative control, you can choose whether the line is dotted or solid- just remember, it has to fit the regulations of your local DOT. The sidewalk abuts the road 9 studs on each side, and is two plates above the surface of the roadway. It is heavily encouraged that the sidewalk be some shade of grey. Of course, the top level is meant to be debris-filled. The important thing here is that the ends will match up when people bring them together; otherwise, you're encouraged to do what you want in the intervening space.

Example:
1 2 3 4

Building Module:

The fun part! Rubble, decay, urban sprawl; all are of prime importance to you, aspiring contest-winner! Trashed duplexes, burnt out sky-scrapers, quarantined bodegas; if it's urban and apocalypse'd, it's legit. Oh, and it has to fit on a 32x32 baseplate. Or more than one 32x32 baseplate. Or three. It just has to be able to mesh with a general layout. That's the important thing here- compatibility.

The Judges:
Rob Gurney, ExoBuilder , and myself will be judging. We’ll be taking bribes but not applications.

The Fabulous Prizes:
-1st Place: Custom Accessories by Hazel: Golden Gears of war armor, Golden Kaliso armor, Golden lancer, and a golden shotgun!
-BrickArms Zombie Survival kit, along with “specially-colored injected prototypes”!

-2nd Place: Custom Accessories by Hazel: Silver Gears of war armor, Silver Lancer!
-Brickarms Zombie Survival kit!

-3rd Place: Custom Accessories by Hazel: Bronze Gears of War armor, Bronze Lancer!
-Rebel Battle Pack!

Things to Keep in Mind:

-Zombies are starting to get overplayed. While there is nothing better than a well-done zombie infestation, the key words are WELL DONE. Dudes with skulls for heads are not zombies, and they will certainly not guarantee you immediate popularity, as everyone seems to think these days.
-Rubble! When a building collapses, where do the debris go?
-If you're at a loss for the style which we, the judges, will be looking for, just refer to Rob's apocalypse dio, the inspiration for this whole shebang.
-Individuality! City blocks all look the same these days; how will yours stand out after it's been burnt to the ground? This contest isn't meant to stifle creativity; we want to reinvigorate the brand and start something new.
-Compatibility!

Any questions/comments as to the rules should be asked in the thread below; we'll start a new thread for entries.

I'm down.
Where do I sign up?
Cpt. M 7 years ago
So you have to do both parts of the contest to win?
LegoLord. PRO 7 years ago
Sweet. Customs by Hazeal, that's all of the inspiration for me. Go time...~LL
Nocterpus [deleted] 7 years ago
Standardization?
what do you mean by that.
Do you want a dio, or do you want a standard way to build a street and a building?
just need the clear it up.
im confused
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Captain Musa: Yep, both a street and building are required.

@+Aus: We have the standard way to build a street and building; your task is to build a dio to those specifications.
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
You make a dio with our new standard supplied in the pics above. One street module connected to one building module. The ultimate plan is to have a whole city to come together at a lego convention. Hope it helps.
Cpt. M 7 years ago
Ok.
Nocterpus [deleted] 7 years ago
Yes, it does. Thanks
nolnet PRO 7 years ago
Ahh, I'm a sucker for Standardization. This is gonna be great!
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
So, we make something... and what, you expect people to come together at some show? Like Brickcon, or Brickfair? Then isn't this really only open to one country? Or adjoining countries?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Skinny Boy: The contest is open to everyone, but, yes, the ultimate goal is to have a big collaborative display at a con. But why should that stop you from building?
Skinny Boy Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Skinny Boy (member) 7 years ago
Yeah, I guess. I did sound really snotty. I'll have to get some bricks out then.
Cpt. M 7 years ago
Umm...Could I do mine in 16x16 format. I don't have two big baseplates, but I did put the road on a 16 by 16. And the building on the other. Is that alright?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
While you're welcome to create a layout that is 64x64, 96x32, or any other multiple of 32x32, I'm afraid that having a setup that is 16x16 kinda defeats the purpose of the contest. Compatibility!
Cpt. M 7 years ago
Well, I guess I have some time for another BL order.
nolnet PRO 7 years ago
^ since they're invisible in the end, you could build a "circle" out of any smaller baseplates like 8x16 and 16x16.
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
What do you mean by circle?
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Ok. I've decided i'm gonna try and give it a go. Just a question or two:
The underneath, where the road is... that doesn't really matter what it looks like, right? You know, colour wise, like the ref pic?
By 'street connected to building', you mean a road going by a building, like side by side?
Then i'm good to go.
Garbageman13 7 years ago
Great, another contest! I'm gonna try and redeem myself from the last one!

I have a question though, do I have to bring it to a con? I doubt I could make it, so I don't know if I can enter. You said the contest is open to everyone, but the ultimate goal is a layout at some con. What if we can't make it, or need parts from that MOC to build another?

Gee, I wish I could go to Brick-Con someday. It's a shame I'm too busy.
Austin__S Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Austin__S (member) 7 years ago
Very nice contest idea. This sounds fun. I'm not able to bring my entry to Brickcon though, I will probably never go since it's so far away and I have school and all that.

Also, is there a standardized vertical length for each floor, and/or how high up windows are? Thanks in advance.
Now to write down dimensions and start building.
Garbageman13 7 years ago
One thing I forgot to add: Thanks to the contest organizers and prize donators!
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
You do not have to bring it to a con. I t would just look really cool to have a whole apoc city at any con!
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Garbageman: nope, the only requirement is that you build and photograph it by March 15th. There's an idea though; maybe we'll do a 'best of BrickFair' prize for everyone who brings a module there.

@Austin: The floors can be whatever dimensions you want, as long as they're minifig scale. Diversity is definitely a good thing here; we're looking for an organic city feel.
Steelharbinger PRO 7 years ago
Will there be standards for raised roads? i have an idea for how to do them, and it would allow for metro stations (subways) and sewers. I might enter this contest...
Cpt. M 7 years ago
Doeas it have to be whole road? I wanted to put like a hole in it.
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
@Harbinger- For this contest no, I also was thinking the same thing, I am planning on doing that later, but first I need to make a ramp a ramp piece.

@Captain Musa- You can add craters and holes!
Cpt. M 7 years ago
Sweet. Cause I realized I had not that much black bricks.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
What about seasons? Can we do something with snow?
Cpt. M 7 years ago
I'm going to BrickWorld. So I could bring mine there.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
You won't be disqualified for having snow, but the general environment we're looking for is a summer-y feel with light vegetation; such as here.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Ok, thanks [Carter]. How much do you want for your bribe. :P
Cpt. M 7 years ago
@Carter--What do you think about Brick World? Will you be able to make it? I already got tickets. 208.00 USD Round Trip. FTW
WisrthanU 7 years ago
I will probably be at Brickworld too. 6 hour drive ain't FTW. :I
Cpt. M 7 years ago
2 hour plane ride. FTW
But I have to stop at NY, which pointless, but ohwell.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
I'll be at BrickWorld, but what I can bring will be determined by whether I get a ride there or have to fly.
Apocalust PRO 7 years ago
Yarg. This will probably fail in tears but I will try my hand at this.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
The sidewalk dosen't have to be light gray does it? Any colour? Dark Gray? :P
Tekka Croe 7 years ago
So, I realize that 32 X 32 is the standard measurement for modular town setups, but would 16 X 32 work? That way it would be just as deep as any of the other buildings, just not as wide. If you go into the "Old Town" of a city, you can generally find smaller buildings like I'm talking about wedged between other larger ones.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Skinny Boy: the sidewalk should be light grey or light bley, though you can certainly add weathered or damaged bits in other colors.

@Tekka Croe: Sorry, but we're going for a grid-like layout, for the greatest possible flexibility. You're certainly welcome to have multiple buildings in a 32x32 space.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Ah dang. Dunno if I have that many grey/bley plates.
Even if we know we're not going to be at a convention, do we have to follow everything exactly? One of my plans would mean my entry wouldn't match up with others that well, but since it won't have to...
My specs are correct (32x32 baseplates, and road built today), just something i'll be adding to it will make it quite different.
WilltheMasshole 7 years ago
I think I'll have to try my hand a this, and if it's good enough, I think I'll bring it to Brickfair. Great contest idea guys!
ExoBuilder 7 years ago
Good boy Gaunt, we need more people to bring it to Brickfair :D
Tekka Croe 7 years ago
@ Carter; Right, well, thanks for clearing that up. I may just make two 16 X 32's and stick 'em together.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
I'm getting ahead of the game, WIP already posted. I'm about 25% done.
MOD
Robbyem 7 years ago
@tekka: you can do that.
WilltheMasshole 7 years ago
Wait, I just built my road, and I must have done it wrong. I made the road 16x32, is that not the correct measurement? Also, if it is, what are the dimensions for the sidewalks? Like what is the overall baseplate size, including the road. I'm confused, sorry.
admin
[Carter] Posted 7 years ago. Edited by [Carter] (admin) 7 years ago
The overall size for the road should be 32x32. The sidewalk abuts the road by 9 studs on either side, plus rubble. I'm afraid that 16x32 will not work; we're looking for multiples of 32x32, and anything that's smaller than that will cause problems when putting all of these together.
WilltheMasshole 7 years ago
Wait, the whole road and sidewalk should be 32x32 or just the road? Looking at your pic, the road looks about 16x32...
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
So, could I make the first layer of my sidewalk dark gray, then the next layer light gray? Like the bottom layer was a darker concrete or something stupid? And have the top layer worn, weathered, broken and rubbled?
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Skinny, that's what I did.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Yes, but I was going to use a lot less light gray... since I don't have much.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Gaunt: the road itself is 12 bricks and 1 plate. The whole thing fits snugly on a baseplate.

@Skinny Boy: that's fine, the more weathered and damaged, the better. I actually think WisrthanU's WIP road looks better than my example.
WisrthanU Posted 7 years ago. Edited by WisrthanU (member) 7 years ago
Yay! Also, your standard just has to show the basics, and the builder can alter it however they please.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
UPDATE: About 40% Done! Another pic up.
WilltheMasshole 7 years ago
Sorry Carter, you might not have got my question. To make it simpler, should the entire thing fit on a 32x32 baseplate? I think that's what it is, and I should've just asked that, sorry.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Gaunt, I think both parts of the contest have to be on 32x32s. Check out my photostream.
<samW> 7 years ago
Sounds fun. I don't know if I could keep something like that built by the time Brickfair comes around, but I can try!
ExoBuilder 7 years ago
You can do it Sam!
diegoboy Posted 7 years ago. Edited by diegoboy (member) 7 years ago
I would love to enter the contest, but I'm afraid I don't have any 32x32 baseplate, so... :(
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Got some pics of my road module up. Everything look standard in it?
whateverly 7 years ago
Don't be afraid. Just make the two modules 32x32. You can always add a baseplate later. Alternatively, you can connect 16x16 baseplates or even 8x16s. Keep in mind that 4 48x48 baseplates in a 2x2 configuration are the equivalent of 9 32x32 baseplates in a 3x3 configuration.

Thanks for hosting this Carter.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Another question:
The building, can we build it (especially if we know we wont be at a convention) with only 3 walls?
You know what I mean, for photography. A lot of mine involves interior shots, which will be hard to get with 4 walls and boarded up windows. Its hard to build whilst constantly thinking, will I be able to get a pic of that? Thanks.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
I'm gonna say that's fine Skinny Boy.
Nocterpus [deleted] 7 years ago
hey mine is 32x48 is that ok?
admin
[Carter] Posted 7 years ago. Edited by [Carter] (admin) 7 years ago
Having an open wall is fine, Skinny Boy, though we'd rather have it a touch more realistic; maybe have the back of the house blown apart, allowing people to see the action inside?

@+Aus, sorry, but that doesn't fit the grid shape we're going for. You're welcome to expand it to 32x64, though!

To reiterate for everyone; Each module MUST be 32x32 or a MULTIPLE thereof.
Cpt. M 7 years ago
I finally started on mine. Where would we display them at Brick World?
I have a table so...... =D
Garbageman13 7 years ago
So, one questions been haunting me these past few hours...

Are multiple entries allowed? Your last post made it seem like it was allowed, but I'm not 100 percent sure.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Garbageman: Multiple entries are definitely allowed!

@Captain Musa: I've never attended BrickWorld before, so I'll leave it to whoever's in charge there.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Good to know. I'll try my best to make a wall with large holes for shooting through. I understand we need to have it realistic and all, I just wanted to know. Thanks for answering.
Garbageman13 7 years ago
I seem to have gotten an idea of what I'd like to make! I do have another question though, one which I am in serious doubt about.

Or we allowed to do corner roads? Like a Cafe Corner layout for instance? I doubt it, seeing as how I'd have to extend my MOC for that, and 32x32 was maximum(If I'm recall correctly.).

Another question has come to mind after I finished writing the previous one. Must the side walk be tiled or with studs on top? Also, what If I want rubble to be 2 bricks high? Is that allowed?

Thank you for your time, and good luck to all the participants in this contest.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Garbageman: Corner roads are definitely allowed, as are corner modules. I'm not sure what you mean by extending your MOC for that, though.
The sidewalk can certainly be tiled, though I'd recommend including some studs to give it a damaged appearance. I'm not sure what you mean by having rubble 2 bricks high.
Garbageman13 Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Garbageman13 (member) 7 years ago
@Carter, thanks! I apparently made a mistake about the rubble. I've solved the problem now.

Some darn strict 'guidelines'.

I may enter...
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@ Kojman; I beg to differ; I think that the guidelines are really very straightforward. Perhaps they could have been written better, and that may be what is causing some confusion, but I'm really not sure where all of this uncertainty over them is coming from.
kojman47 Posted 7 years ago. Edited by kojman47 (member) 7 years ago
They are straightforward, they just put some limitations on creativity. But I believe that was already discussed.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Well, some things are always limited when you start standardizations in a group.
kojman47 7 years ago
That's why I said it was already discussed.
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Yep.
Skinny Pete Deux Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Skinny Pete Deux (member) 7 years ago
Now this I like. It may be the OCD in me, or just my overall nature. But I enjoy being restricted to a certain set of guidlines. I will definatly have a go at it. Whether I come up with something postable however is an entirely different matter.

Carter: Perhaps the confusion has come in becuase of your audience. For the moment it seems most of your entrants are of the younger group. They don't always like being restricted. =p
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Sigh, another question. Can we have any sort of backstory?
I've been thinking a lot about it, and if everyone has different ones, they won't exactly match up at a convention. But since I can't go to one... are we allowed have our own? Don't worry, its not ridiculous or anything.
MOD
Robbyem Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Robbyem (moderator) 7 years ago
I don't understand. Are you asking about the backstory of the building?
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
Well, more the whole MOC. The building (in my case) is really just a building. But there'll be figs with stuff, that will look very odd without an explanation, i.e. a backstory.
admin
[Carter] Posted 7 years ago. Edited by [Carter] (admin) 7 years ago
That's fine, I guess? I'm really not sure what your question is here.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
I'm just asking if we can do any kind of backstory. You know the two main ones: zombies appear, and a nuke goes off. I have an idea (sorta stolen from a movie, but tweaked a bit) that is different, and was wondering if I can use that, so my entry is understood. Obviously I won't share it here, or someone will take it.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
Well, of course you can! Is it even possible to make a MOC without some mental conception of why it exists?
{kø†h¥} [deleted] 7 years ago
I'm on it. Does the infestation strictly have to be zombies or could it be something more along the lines of a Vampire infectee from I Am Legend?
WisrthanU 7 years ago
Kothlis, I don't think there has to be an infestation at all.
Garbageman13 Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Garbageman13 (member) 7 years ago
Can we have a different villain besides zombies? Like, an alien invasion or something more original? I'm curious about this, as zombies are getting over-used.

Thanks for your time.
Skinny Boy 7 years ago
What Garbageman said is like what I was saying earlier, though his comment makes a lot more sense.
admin
[Carter] Posted 7 years ago. Edited by [Carter] (admin) 7 years ago
@Everyone. I recommended using something OTHER than zombies. From the suggestions section; "Zombies are starting to get overplayed."

Please re-read the rules before asking questions. As WisrthanU said, there is no requirement to have an infestation of anything at all.
Garbageman13 7 years ago
I have another small question that requires attention. Can I use custom stickers/decals? Can I use decals with a trademarked/copyrighted/registered logo? I didn't see any rules against it, so I'm guessing it's fine.

Thank you for your time.
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
@Garbageman: Certainly! I definitely won't sue you.
Garbageman13 7 years ago
Haha, okay. Thanks!
kojman47 7 years ago
Am I allowed to incorporate RAMM into this?
admin
[Carter] 7 years ago
The short answer; sure!

The longer answer (which I've been wanting to put into writing for a while); Sure, but why? I can certainly understand people wanting to emulate the distinct style of RAMM; I've been intending to make something RAMM for quite a while now. The thing is, it seems a lot of people have been under the impression that adding a red-white-red flag to a crummy MOC will instantly make that MOC as excellent and popular as the best of Nick's work. I simply don't understand the motivation that some people have to be a part of someone else's bandwagon.

Those are just my personal feelings, and no one will be docked any points for including vehicles, troops, or any paraphernalia from any fan-built theme. I'd just like to encourage everyone to exercise all the creativity they have, and that means doing your own thing.
kojman47 7 years ago
Well I was thinking of having them either helping out some survivors, or threating to kill/torture them. I haven't decided yet, but I'm leaning toward the RAMM soldiers helping them.
