I think it’s about time to make some free presets don’t you?

Here is a test I did.

Download the presets here. (Please help me fix them, and add some more also.)

Sorry these presets suck, I didn’t spend much time on them.

What we need is a tool to convert Lightroom presets, shame that when you export the Aperture presets they are not XML or text file based like Lightrooms, converting would probably be really easy then.

I just had a quick look and they are encoded XML files like the regular plist preferences files on 10.5 and above. There is a built-in command line tool called plutil which will convert them into normal XML files, but the XML values are still gibberish. :(

Thanks! Excited to see free ones starting to pop up already when Aperture 3 hasn't been out long at all! Haven't played with making my own yet, but it's something I hope to do ... only wish there was a way to do film grain effects without having to resort to plugins (especially since most of mine are still 32-bit)

First, thanks tychay for starting the thread and sharing your presets!

About a year and a half ago a Flickr contact (ElTiDY) shared some settings he used with me and I've found the Cross Process and Bleach "actions" quite useful. He had a bunch of them but I've taken the seven I tweaked and use and uploaded them here: files.me.com/ronaldg/pn0i1n. You'll find 3 cross process presets using different color casts plus bleach, lomo, blue ice, and a color inversion preset. I'd be happy to see how you might modify these to make them better. I'm pretty content with all of these except Lomo. The Photoshop actions I have for Lomo do a much better job (and I haven't managed to duplicate them in Aperture).

ELTiDY's photo stream is here and has a number shots with very cool processing.

Hope someone else finds these useful. Note there A2 based - haven't yet had time to see if they could be improved using A3 features.

I've got most of a presets gallery set up as a sub-section of the Aperture Assistant site, but it still need layout tweaking and I need to hammer on the uploading and downloading parts before it can go public.

Hopefully early next week people can start browsing, and also login to add their own presets.

The current plan is to be able to browse/search by keywords, with users being able to upload the preset and before-n-after photos.

You can find a sneak peek at a presets gallery here:
aperture-assistant.com/presets

At the moment uploading is still disabled for anyone but me and the layout needs some tweaking, but you can browse by keyword and search by keyword/groups of keyword.

Click on any thumbnail or preset title to be taken to the page for that preset to see a larger rollover version of the image, plus description.

For groups of presets the easiest will be to take screengrabs of all the relevant images in the Viewer pane, then do the same after hitting M to show the unadjusted images.

Any feedback (and any CSS layout advice) very welcome...

I don't remember which of the preset submissions above that it is in, but one of the presets linked to on this thread has some local contrast presets that will get you quite close to a Dave Hill look. It might take a bit of tweaking to get it to your personal tastes, but it's a good start.

One thing to keep in mind, with Dave Hill and similar style, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LIGHTS!
A preset can only go so far...you need the right light to get that look.

photonate.com says:

I think making a preset to get the "david hill" look in aperture is not going to work well. Aperture can do some neat things but since his images are using HDR a lot getting one preset to do that is going to be hard.

I think that one solution is to make a set of presets that stack on top of themselves to work towards the effect but would require some user input along the way to get the desired results.

Another solution is to create presets that would simulate his look on certain images. You would then be required to use a photo that fits a certain style to make it come out right.

The last solution is to make the effect and have to apply to and HDR photo that was created outside of aperture.

Since I have been trying to come up with some more presets that have not really been done too much yet I will try one or two of the methods I listed and If one seems to work then great. If not, well then we will be all the wiser.

As for matching or even simulating Nik effects.. I am afraid that is another area that aperture will probably just not excel in. Some of the color efex ones maybe but silver efex pro is the BOMB for B&W and its going to be REALLY hard to try and match it in anyway.

I can see the desire for wanting to have Silver efex style presets in aperture but without a way to mimic the "structure" ability in SFP I think its pointless.

photonate.com says:

Ok so decided to play around with the whole david hill thing a bit. Here is what I have come up with so far.

The first image of each set is the original. The second image is the preset effect. The third image of the second set is the effect of the preset and adjustment of the contrast slider in Aperture.

Please give me some feedback as to what ya'll like or dislike. I wanted to apply this effect to a portrait but was unable to find one that I could share on here at the moment.

If this feels like the right direction then I will keep working on it and trying to fine tune it a bit more. I will probably end up with a couple presets that will have different intensities and color overlays.

photonate.com says:

Ok.. Like I mentioned in a previous post, getting the "David Hill" look in Aperture alone is just not very easy or realistic. With that I have tried my hardest to produce something that at least goes down that path. The above post shows some examples of that. I have played and tweaked what I could but since every photo is going to be different it is just going to be a waste of time to fine tune it any more.

Here is a link to the presets and some more sample photos if anyone is interested in playing with them

I've added some attempts at a set of split-toning presets to the gallery:
aperture-assistant.com/presets/split-toning-v1

They use the Curves brick combined with the Saturation slider in the Enhance brick, so unlike the MacCreate split-tone method they'll work with any size or aspect ratio image.

They won't work with the Black & White brick, though, as that will desaturate the effects of any brick that is further up the path...
