Suzanne stumbled upon an image in Flickr, an inquired how the shooter achieved his results.

This was my response.

"He didn't. Look closely. The DOF is fairly shallow. Don't be confused and baffled by bullshit and color. That's why, when you shoot in B/W, your vision becomes more refined, astute, focused and sharper. When you shoot in B/W, you can't baffle or bullshit your viewers. In B/W, it comes down to vision, composition, technique, presentation and execution.87

That is why when I conducted photography workshops, that I insisted that the participants shoot only in B/W for an entire day. They moaned and groaned at first. But, upon seeing their results, they also could see the growth and maturity in their images.

It's all about vision. Anyone can expose a frame adequately. It's all about expressing "your own unique and true vision."

P.S. It would be much easier to compose this thread, if Miss Maya wasn't walking across the keyboard.

quietlightphoto This isn't the photo I was asking about. It was a close-up of a flower at 100mm, but aperture was at 5.6. The DOF was deep. Almost the whole flower was in sharp focus from front to back. So I didn't understand how that was achieved, wide open. And it was in color but quite honestly I wasn't even noticing the color. .

I don't remember where I saw it.
MOD

Suz

I remember the snap. With a 100mm piece of glass and up close to your subject, the DOF would be quite shallow. Was it perhaps a "crop" of a larger image? Was the Eagle, trained to pose in front of the U.S.; Flag backdrop? I've heard that Portland has a fantastic Saturday and Sunday Market. I should check it out for a first time. Maybe burn a few frames of B/W celluloid. Perhaps you're right, and my vision is waning. maybe a bit of street shooting will heighten my awareness and sharpen my dulled shooting vision and skill :-(

quietlightphoto Try scenics. It will do much to heighten your vision and
skill. :-)

Yes, the flower photo might have been a crop, because the deep DOF was "too deep" to be 5.6.

You'll have to give me a "scenic shooting" tutorial. I've never done them. What lens do I use? And what is that aperture thingy that people keep referring to? Do I need a special scenic camera, or will one of my present cameras do the job? Please call me, and instruct me on how this is done. Do I need a focusing cloth and loupe, an f/92 lens?

Thanks

Bokeh

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

Bokeh is a Japanese word used to describe the "out of focus highlights" in an image. Some lenses have a pleasant Bokeh, and some have somewhat harsh Bokeh. It's determined by the lens design itself. We, the shooters have very little to no control over it. In Flickr comps, it's often confused with shallow depth of field.

Right you are Russ.

I also consider that if the background is recognizable, then it is not bokeh.

If one wants to create a shallower depth of field one can crank up the f-stop to get a blurrier, but still a distinctive background.

The sample below is a Depth of Field Shallow (on the left), that is partly Bokeh (on the right).
I would consider this shot in either challenge; Bokeh or DoF Shallow.
Aster bud macro_AM3866c

I would call the next two photos below as bokeh only.
Wild brush AN_IMG_9619
Bug and Bokeh_MG_4772

I would call the final photo as Depth of Field Shallow (DoF Shallow) only.
Coreopsis Grandiflora-2288

I realize that bokeh and DoF Shallow may be the same thing, but, I would like a bit more distinction between DoF Shallow and a totally blurry background, bokeh, in our challenges. Otherwise we just get rid of one of the terms from our challenges to avoid any confusion.

These are my opinions on how I would like these two terms treated in our challenges regarding Bokeh versus Dof F Shallow.

I consider these rules when voting for the above two terms.
VisionsBySuzanne PRO 5 years ago
Orkakorak In some of the groups, they start a theme "Bokeh or DOF". People get the two mixed up or do not understand the term bokeh. So I guess to avoid confusion, some groups combine the two so either are acceptable.
MOD
quietlightphoto Posted 5 years ago. Edited by quietlightphoto (moderator) 5 years ago
Paul is correct. Bokeh and shallow depth of field are two different things, results. I think it best not to confuse or combine the two. You will often see snaps with very shallow depth of field, which exhibit little or know Bokeh. As I stated before, it is a result the lens design (aperture blade shape, number of blades, etc). And we as the lens users, have little to no control over it.

I'm not exactly sure how the "Transcending Challenge" group works. Are we supposed to transfer our wins from this group, over into the Transcending group? I rarely go there, but Rhonda, Suzanne and Sandra have been complaining about my lack of participation over there...

When you have a win in one of the other groups (either the Tri- Groups or other groups you belong to - as described) then you can add it to a corresponding challenge in Transcending.. What is so hard about that?

Ungrateful? Never. Especially now that we've finally had a chance to meet and go shooting together. I had a wonderful weekend. I hope you enjoyed it too. And knowing how much I like big cats, you wearing the Leopard patterned lingerie was a nice touch, and especially appreciated.

It was a great weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing your photographic results.

P.S. I found the "missing" lingerie the next morning. Rhonda, it has become a full time job, mentoring her and keeping her in-line. And to top it off, I have to send out another "goodie package" for her tomorrow. :-)

Great link Russ, but to clarify what is a best minimum size to be printed by Costco, the resolution must be 300 dpi.

Costco will not accept above or below 300 dpi to process your photos.

Therefore, to add to your link, I think that all the readers should be aware of the post-processing size requirements.

Desired photo from Costco is 4X6 times 300 equals 1200X1800
Desired photo from Costco is 5X7 times 300 equals 1500X2100
Desired photo from Costco is 8X10 times 300 equals 2400X3000
Desired photo from Costco is 8X12 times 300 equals 2400X3600

If you would like a poster size printer just multiply the desired Height X Width by 300 if you are choosing a post-processor.

Many programs that can display RAW files and later convert to JPG will only do a minimum of 72 dpi.

Lightroom and Photoshop can be configured to default at 300 dpi.

Picasa will only produce 72 dpi.

Paul, Rhonda & Suz,

I felt that I was neglecting the "legendary" Nikon 105 f/2.5 lens. So I took it out for a spin last weekend. Mine is the original "Sonnar design" manual focus version. It's the same lens that Steve McCurry used for his famous "Afghan Girl" snap. It's a must have lens for any Nikon shooter. The newer ones are auto-focus. It really is worthy of its legendary status, and the Bokeh from it is awesome.

Composition means nothing. And everything.

guytal.com/wordpress/2012/08/composition-means-nothing/

There is truth to this. Nothing is more saddening and frustrating, as seeing a snap of an interesting subject, that has been poorly composed and executed. But, the same holds true for a snap of a well composed image, of meaningless or boring subject matter.

Shoot Just One Frame.

www.pixiq.com/article/shoot-just-one-frame

There is truth to this too. I find that many of todays digital shooters have adopted the "spray & pray" method of shooting. This is especially true of many of contemporary wedding photographers. They burn many hundreds or thousands of images during an event, only to come away with a few meaningful, poignant images. I believe the same applies to scenic shooting. If you come upon a scene and the lighting is conducive to a nice snap, consider the scene, composition, and make a snap or two, then move on. If the light is boring, unattractive, come back at a later time, or just figure that it wasn't meant to be.

OMG! :-O

I just learned that Suzanne very recently attended the KISS and Motley Crue concert. Geez, those are long haired, dope smoking, hard rock, heavy metal bands. I sure wish I could have seen this. I can just imagine her, smoking the wacky tobaccy, doing Jagermeister shots, waving her Bic lighter, tossing her bra onto the stage and who knows what else? She's a wild one. Maybe we don't know her as well as we thought? :-)

It really makes me wonder about the type and class of people that are allowed in this group. What next, Pentax or film shooters? I'm just appalled! :-)

KISS show

Well, let me explain, since Russ brought the subject up. Our son Jon passed away at age 27 in 1999. His favorite group was KISS. Our whole family got together, some from northern Missouri, some from Georgia and some from here where we live and all bought tickets for the Kiss/Motley Crue concert in St. Louis in honor of Jon. So now I am an official head banger. First and last rock concert I'll probably ever go to. Yes, "if it's too loud, you're too old". That be me!
