Group Description

This #AlexTweetup Flickr group is a collection of pictures around astronaut
Alexander Gerst and the #Shenanigans09 and our trip to Baikonur
- an event shared by 16 dedicated #SpaceTweeps
and the #SpaceMascots #PinkLittleDragon and @CamillaSpace.

After having "followed" the next generation of @esa astronauts for several years now (some of us as early as 2009), our group enjoyed this very unique adventure of witnessing the #Soyuz #Exp40 launch of our German @esa astronaut Alexander Gerst ( #FF @Astro_Alex ) and his crewmates @NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman ( #FF @astro_reid ) and @fka_roscosmos cosmonaut and commander Maxim Surajew ( #FF @MSuraev ) to #ISS on May 28th 2014.

These past weeks surely have been a surreal and mind-blowing experience for all of us - being there in Baikonur in the middle of Kazakhstan - witnessing so many of the traditions set during the launch of Juri Gagarin more than half a century ago around his lift-off in 1961.
Now seeing these three astronauts heading to the International Space Station together
as ambassadors of peace from Germany, the United States and Russia - where so many international partners and participants are cooperating on the most ambitious international collaboration ever, is a highlight.

Sharing this experience via Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and other social media channels with our followers - thus spreading the word and the enthusiasm - was (and is) a real pleasure.
And watching the constantly growing #SpaceFamily really proves that this excitement seems to be highly contagious :-)

Really impressive are the numbers of our social media statistics, which is clearly showing the high impact our group had (and has) all around the globe, spreading our excitement amongst the online communities.

In addition to the "online-impact" chances are good that pictures of #AlexTweetup as well as of #SpaceFestVI ( www.spacefest.info/VI/Astros.html )
will go on display in a German Museum, where "not-yet-social-media-fans" could learn, how enriching social media can be.
After kindly granting me official permission to use the #NebraSkydisk as central element for my designs for both events, the "State Office For Heritage Management And Archaeology - The State Museum of Prehistory in Halle / Germany - expressed their interest in receiving badges and pictures of both events for their collection / exhibition.
I enjoyed distributing our badges to many #Spaceholix from all around the world
- to people, who are fond of our beautiful blue marble and the space beyond, who are dedicating their lives to explore our universe and who are passing on the torch of inspiration.
And it will be my pleasure to send pictures of our May 2014 adventures, which we shared with many friends from all over the world, while meeting some of the very first astronauts and moonwalkers ever, who were sending their best wishes to today's generation of astronauts on their way to #ISS.

Thanks to all friends around us, who kindly took some of these pics for us with our / their cameras.
And also thanks to all other "unnamed photographers" for sharing their shots.
Sorry for not being able to credit all of you by name.
I have to admit I lost overview due to being overwhelmed by all the fantabulous events we shared ;-)

Last but not least:
Thanks to Remco Timmermans and Eico Neumann for organizing and coordinating this trip and also many thanks to @ESA (especially Julia Kovaleva in Moscow) and Roscosmos
for all the help and support to make this trip possible.
And a huge thank you to Jaap Terweij for being our tour guide, host and voice.
Thanks to your knowledge, experience and contacts this trip really was very special.

P.S. What the best thing about our space events is?
#PostTweetupAlwaysIsPreTweetup ;-)
