I'm visiting from London, If I can I will be there. Can I trouble you for a link to a map that will help me find it?

Many thanks in advance,

whipartist says:

This should do it.

The very short version would be to take the Webster tunnel into Alameda. Turn right on Atlantic. Drive until you get into the air station. The entrance to the Webster tunnel is at 5th and Broadway in Oakland.

And Gwen, Saturday is January 6 not 7.

Patrick, I know, I know, but it's too darn cold! Plus I need to practice the nighttime stuff some more before I go humiliate myself with you pros again.

MindSpigot, done while whipartist was doing the same.

Gotcha on the 6th; it's hard keeping up on days when they all run together like this ;)

I'm without car (and for that matter a driving license). I'm staying in North Beach is there a way to get there by public transport? Or perhaps even get a lift off somebody?? I'll gladly pay for the gas.

Kevin says:

Adrian, in North Beach you will be within striking distance of a ferry ride via the Alameda-Oakland Ferry. The Alameda ferry stop is on the NE edge of the old base. Pier 41 or the Ferry Building in SF are both points of embarkation. (I don't know for sure I will be available for the stroll so I can't say I can give you a lift from there at this time. :-)

EDIT: Oh damn. I forgot, weekend service is suspended for a couple months. :-( Why don't I remember this stuff when I am composing the message?

is alameda NAS open to the public? (sorry if this is a ridiculously stupid question!) if so, i'd love to join you all, and adrian, i'll gladly give you a lift!

whipartist says:

Yes, Alameda NAS is open to the public.

Mind Spigot, I'm not 100% certain I'm going, but if I do I could pick you up at the Lake Merritt BART station.

moucri says:

Here are directions for public transit if you need it…I'm sure this'll sound very confusing, I'm not great at explaining things…

Take BART to the 19th Street Station in Oakland (Richmond or Pittsburg/Baypoint train). When you come up from the station you'll be on Broadway. Walk to Broadway and 20th (or exit BART on 20th) and wait for the 51 AC Transit bus in front of the Sears store. The 51 will go through a tunnel and you'll then be in Alameda on Webster Street. Stay on the bus until it turns left onto Santa Clara Ave. You'll then want to catch the 63, the bus stop is on Webster Street. The 63 will take you to the base.

For one way BART will cost you $2.75, and AC Transit is $2 (make sure you get a transfer when you board the 51).

EDIT - If you would like me to mark up a map, I can try!

That seems perfectly clear mourci, many thanks for that. offferit it now seems likely I'll be meeting up with deborah earlier and wil tag along with her but if circumstances intervene in some way can I keep the option open?

What a lovely lot you seem to be, just as friendly as the London flickr group (I do hope we can return the favour sometime). I sooo love flickr.

This sounds like it would be fun, especially given it would give me an excuse to stop by my favourite pub, but I think family responsibilities are keeping me busy this coming weekend :-/

Hey Adrian - if you're still around for a while, would like to meet up with you for a bit of shooting in Pacifica. I'm sure other locals (Deborah Lattimore, 4PIZON, John Curley) would be game too.

Woo! The rain is done and it is *crisp* out. I'm glad so many of you are planning to come, this is going to be a lot of fun.
FYI: layer up, this end of Alameda is more fog belt-y/windy than the mainland seems to be.

Maybe I got turned around on my last visit but aren't there two entrances with planes?

Mindspigot: If you don't get a ride from someone, try renting a bicycle. There's a bunch in the fisherman's wharf area. You can take the bike to Oakland via the ferry or BART and ride to Alameda from there.

Unfortunately I can't make it. Hope you all have lots of fun. That's a great place for pics.

Dawn -- kind of, there's another entrance way over on the side by the estuary, but I think the only way to get there is to drive past the main-main entrance.

Pete -- let me know any time you want to go, I'm right around the corner from there now & would love to hang out again.

There's another plane at the south end of the base, in front of Encinal High School:
www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=250+Central+Ave.,...

It's a block and a half from the entrance on W Oriskany Ave. You can get there by driving past the main entrance or by going down to the end of Webster and turning right onto Central.

But the link in the top post shows the meeting place at the main entrance.

Oh, I imagine that this won't be our last flickr navy base stroll. :-) I know I've been out there dozens (hundreds?) of times and feel like I've barely explored it, so for any of you who can't make it today, give me a holler because I'm pretty much *always* up for wandering around over there.

Yay! That was fun! Sorry I had to cut out early, but my hair had become so blonde that it was beginning to frighten me, and I had an appointment to cure that.

I treated the day as an exercise. My goals were to focus on patterns, think about composition, and try to do everything with my wide-angle lens. Lenszilla came out for a while, but other than that I did a pretty good job of sticking to my goals. Even though I naturally gravitate toward telephoto, I've fallen in love with the Canon 17-40 f/4L. It's yummy.

Anybody want to help with a name (or even better, portrait) to Flickr handle mapping? I have no idea who anyone is.

I'm easy. Pink hair = Patti.

Should we tag our photos alamedanas0106 instead of ...0107 because of the date mixup?
ages ago (permalink)

view photostream

1600 Squirrels says:

That would depend on whether "06"/"07" refers to the day or year. I assumed it was the year and used 0107 like it says above.

It was a fine day. I got there too late to meet everyone, but it was good to finally meet Chris and Frances and to see familiar faces. Here's my set (no favorite yet):

Wow. Looking through the search for alamedanas0107... You all really covered a lot of ground. There's some amazing stuff in there, too. I can't really pick a favorite from all of it, but I'm really digging the stuff by daryldarko, 1600, and Studio H... all of whom I was unfamiliar with before this.
