I have to fit an AIS to comply with Singapore law but with the number of ships passing close by I don't object believe me!

Does anyone have AIS experience? I want something cost effective as a stand alone unit as I don't have a chart plotter or other electronics. The cheapest option appears to be the AIS-700 from San Jose, www.digitalmarine.com.au/images/pdfs/AIS-700_DM.pdf

Grateful for all advice.

I bought the Nasa marine one, which was excellent. Very reliable, easy to install and very accurate. Takes a minute or two to get used to interpreting the display but I loved it. (also cheap) You may (will?) need to install a splitter for the aerial - so you can use the same one for the VHF and AIS.

Do you require the capacity to transmit as well as receive AIS data ?

The Nasa Marine ' AIS Radar' is receive only and has its own lcd display . It requires a separate VHF aerial and GPS input . Low power consumption and quite a good reputation.

Yes, I have to be able to transmit my position - that's the key requirement so I'm still scratching my head.

How about the ICOM MA-500TR CLASS B AIS TRANSPONDER .
There's an Australian ebay vendor selling it at £590. A well respected maker and it has a screen.

The popular alternative to the ICOM and it might be a better product, seems to be the Vesper Marine AIS WatchMate 850 Transponder and Display for basically the same price.

Thinking time, as I would need the seller to program my registration number into it etc.. but at least it doesn't need the added expense of maps etc..
