Spray hoods

Hi, I'm in the process of getting Garland Sails to manufacture a spray hood for my Acihilles 24. I've been quoted £640 which includes a grab rail but not fitting as I'm not local to Bristol. Anyone got any pointers? Andrew

Design 10/10 .. workmanship 0/10..
Niel knows more than me. (best mates)
Thats why Rb sails did Palidins hood.

I take it we're talking barge pole here. How long ago was the unfortunate experience? Ive been shown a photo of one completed in the last year or so.

Garland said they had a template for an Achilles. John's arrived, all baggy, not a good fit, had to move things to get any shape and grab rail not the same shape as the hood so not even parallel no matter how you adjusted it. He refused to pay, eventually agreed to pay for cost of materials only and made do. Garland said it was an apprentice that did it, not acceptable.

My R&B sprayhood is a thing of beauty and quite like tan now! Ian really good to deal with.

Yes, they said they had templates for the Achilles and had made several previously. I've been sent colour swatches and the fitting track complete with spare screws. When I asked about what it would look like I was sent a photo of a hood fitted at Portishead Marina. It did show some evidence of stretch across the front but I was assured this was usual and the creases come out after a few days as the material settles down, apart from that the hood looked good. So far so good, up till now! The question is..... Is the apprentice still there? Tan, no not sure about tan, It's a personal choice.

I'll admit to being more comfortable with Blue. Getting a small discount for tan says it all!

No discount a sail cover in tan to match. tan grows on you and looks good.

I've bought two sprayhoods from Garland. The one for the A24 was excellent. Fitted like a glove and workmanship was beyond compare. When I bought the 9M I ordered a new sprayhood from Garland. Not a success. Martyn Stowey (the owner) now does all of the manufacture and the stitching is not as professional. The fit is not up to the mark and he was clearly not as au fail with the 9m as he was with the A24. While I still praise the A24 product, I would not get another 9M sprayhood from Garland.

I have had a Garland hood for the past 12 or so years. It has been great. The hood was made by Bill Garland not the new owner of Garland sails so can’t comment on current hoods.

Hi Super Snoopy,
I take it the A24 sprayhood was a recent manufacture ?

Garland Sails made the spray hood for Little Plum a couple of years ago. Fits like a glove and no problems with the workmanship at all. This also included a new frame. So 10/10 from me.

Andrew W500 says:

Thanks for that Little Plum, is your A24 an earlier model ? If so is there much of a difference in the position/fit of the sprayhood in the later sail numbers? Cheers

Make a note that his template will not have flaps/cut outs for your lines led to your winches,

Sorry about the time laps in replying, I've been on the Thames doing a Safety Boat course today, so it's not that I've lost focus.
Thanks for all the input so far, it's been very useful. I have been sent a pattern for the positioning of the track which has also been supplied. The pattern does include cut outs for the standard lines. The colour has been chosen and I can confirm, it isn't Tan!
I'm naturally concerned about the earlier reviews but it seems recent sprayhoods have been well up to standard. I'm going to proceed with the order and will keep you posted. As arranged completion will be mid January. Watch this space. Any other pointers will be welcome. Andrew

just to confirm that the one I got from Garland sails was dreadful - the owner agreed and was embarrassed - even the stitching was terrible - I have rarely seen such a poor piece of work and so slow.... only positive was that they just charged me for materials as I had sold the boat by the time they got around to replying to my complaints...
