Achilles 24 Hardware - ideas?

Hello,

Now back at base from a very successful Fowey week, for a first series of racing with the boat that is. FRR 2014 is already on the calendar but we'll have to tweak a couple of things on the boat to improve boat/sail handling.

a) Our traveller is severely worn out. This being curved have you any suggestions (suppliers) for replacing this. Or go with a standard straight one? It would be great to have one with rope&cleats control lines because the stoppers are a pia.

b) The majority of the aluminium stanchions are pretty badly corroded and in places the bottom guard wire has 'eaten' into the material. I see they are fitted into an aluminium round bit that fits the GRP moulding of the toe rail. Are these one piece, and once again where to get?

c) Went with a bowline knot on the genoa sheet but they are a pain to get passed the standing rigging when tacking. Do you guys use shackles?

d) Then there's a whole list of (snatch)blocks, shackles, boom kicker and a couple of rope clutches to source and replace/install.

Thanks.

i have had to replace two stanchions on mine. Sourced by rummaging around the chandlry barge on hamble (lots of secondhand stuff) but they are not an exact match. Basically i drilled out old stanchions, inserted solid alu tube, then slid new stanchion over top of tube. But it was a pain and still isnt right! old ones where siezed in so i brought several drill bits but i didnt anticipate the largest 3 drill bits where to big for any of my drills! so i ended up trying to file down the solid rod so it would fit in the hole (3mm difference) which has worked ok for one, but the other just pops out as i did not file it down enough to get it deep enough in the socket. It is on the list to redo!

If i had to replace all of them i would just chop them off level with fiberglass and bolt on new sockets! Although i have read that having the stanchion socket as a molded part of the boat is stronger than bolting on new sockets (which are always weak points).

I've put a link below to the first of a series of photos showing how I replaced the original traveller on Blue with one from Barton. It was a few years ago now (2007) so I can't remember the model no, but it was £160, and dead easy to do, and a great improvement. As we live so far from the boat I had to bring it home to do the job, so rebuilt it on a kind of jig to keep the angles the same.

We're spending a week on Blue (based at Loe Beach) from 7th Sept so if you would like to meet up, send me a flickrmail with email address etc...

Interesting, so you just changed the track for an off the shelf straight one. Ehm.... did I mention that the sales director of Barton is one of my best friends...... :-)

The boat handling is now more lumbering than my dream boat - OOD 34 - so it is my mission to fit out Hotfoot with a gucchi 'race package'. FIL better have his check book ready... haha

Force 4 do an ally stanchion that is an exact replacement except (bizarrely) it doesn't have a hole for the lower guard rail. Drill a hole for that and it's fine.
