Deck Lifting Achilles 9m

view profile

Athena of Liverpool says:

Does anybody have any experience of the deck lifting on an Achilles 9m were the standing rigging fixes to the deck? Athena has had a repair done due to a lift on the starboard side we are looking to strengthen the entire job on both sides to be sure. Any views/comments gratefully received. Mark

The deck around the mast foot was cracked and leaking on Sailing Bye allowing water ingress into the ply core, but around the rigging plates seems ok.
We repaired the deck around the mast by cutting out the fibre glass and ply with a disk cutter before replacing with resin and matt, no more problems in the last 4 years fingers crossed.

We found the issue. When stripped back it was clear to see that a significant part of the structure had been removed to fit a cupboard in. The hull strengthener had been hacked away in the area of the cupboard leaving the rigging supported only by the deck itself hence lifting. Glad we got it looked into before the inevitable.

Do you have any pictures of the problem so that we can all check?

Daddsie says:

It was only obvious due to the hollowness in the deck around the chain plates due to osmosis and the balsa rotting away.
