Rolling Stones in '77 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Journey opened.

Peter Tosh warmed up

the Flying Karamozov Brothers got the crowd going.

i was in the nosebleed section; no reserved seating, got there at 6 am and the place was already packed.

Major sunburn.

We took over the commuter trains coming home.

ETA: I was 16. I was allowed to go by myself because it was during the daytime.

Besides a bunch of great local bands, the first big show for me was Hendrix in Houston, TX 1969. Drove 4 hours both ways with a buddy to catch it. Worth every hardship... kept that ticket in my wallet for ever (then finally lost the damn wallet! you'd have thought some kind soul might drop the ticket in the mail at least... but no.) The show was crazy, with "Chicago" of all people and FatMattress (Noel Reddings, Jimi's bassist's band) opening. Man, what an eye opener, there was no looking back after that.

my first rock concert was a small club gig of the german/british/US punk band "fred banana combo" in 1979 or 1980. they were a three-piece band that played, among original compositions, hilarious punk versions of famous pop gems like "yesterday", "she loves you" and "johnny b. goode".

Chesney Hawkes. I hated him. My best pal wanted to go and she was scared of going alone. So being a wonderful caring person, I joined her. It was shit I spent the whole time sitting with my head in my hands. Whilst she bounced up and down next to me. The shame the shame the shame. Haven't seen her since I was 16 and now I have to live with the burden of Chesney being my first gig. Im now 32 the shame still grips me. There is a lesson there. Be selfish. Fuck em.
