Contest Announcement LSB 2011

3rd annual Lego Speeder Bikes Contest

From: 01.12.2011
To: 01.01.2012 - 24:00 MET

Categories

“Color me fascinated”
“Vignette”
“Sir, yes, sir” (Military)

General rules

- Entries have to be new builds, so no pre-existing moc's or used in other contests.
- Size restriction of a speeder bike to: 18 x 10 x 12 studs.
Stands are excluded from the restriction. Normally one can see and estimate the size, but if in doubt we might ask you to show the perimeters of the speeder bike.
- Must fit a standard minifig.
- Landing gear, windshield & a visual convincing ‘engine’ (including hoverpads, accelerators, thrusters, etc…) gain x-tra points – as well as the choice of a fitting minifig.
- Custom parts allowed.

Color me fascinated

Make a speeder bike with a special paint job. The main color should be one of the rare (and therefore part limited) colours. Mixing with other rare colors is welcome and will recieve extra points. But only if it works, so be careful not to overdo it.
Colors - All trans-clear colours, sand red, sand green, sand purple, sand blue, medium blue, dark tan, dark brown, dark orange, dark purple, dark turquoise, violet, (light) aqua, (any kind of) pink, maersk blue, magenta, purple, gold, silver.
Basically every color which is NOT black, dark and light grey, white, red, yellow, blue, green, lime, orange, dark green, dark blue, dark red, tan or reddish brown.

Prizes

1--- A colourful glowing sapphire blue speeder bike with Glow-san.
2 --- Star Wars Impulse set
3 --- Star Wars Impulse set

Vignette [Grand Champion Category]

One or more speeder bikes in a ‘situation’ – action, stunt, refilling, repairing, racing, been ambushed like in The return of the Jedi… a biker gang (cowboys, ninjas, rockers, pirates, knights, droids and clones, etc…) , a chase, an accident or crash, …
Size guideline:
Take a small 16x16 baseplate as a basic orientation. Of you wish to make the base thinner and longer to emphasize a race scene or whatever you’re free, just don’t make it too big. Keep in mind the rough size of 16x16 studs. No restriction on the height.

Prizes

1--- A sparkly-shiny speeder bike made (almost entirely) with brand new chromed bricks from Chrombricks and a brand new Chrome Stormtrooper on top. First place also gets a Luke's Landspeeder set (8092).
2 --- Star Wars Impulse set
3 --- Star Wars Impulse set

Sir, yes, sir! [aka Military]

Make a speeder bike looking like a military vehicle of the future. Do a paint job - make it desert storm or give it a jungle camo. Make it combat ready, make it look sleak for the urban cyber troops or rugged and worn out for the last battalion of the wasteland.

Prizes

1 --- A Maschienenkrieger styled speeder bike with Marshall Bullet riding it.
2 --- Star Wars Impulse set
3 --- Star Wars Impulse set

Entering

- One can enter in every category, so up to three entries per contestant possible. Prizes nevertheless will be given only once, which means the best placing will count. The price giving for the other placing will automatically shift to the next place.
- It is also possible to make a wonderful coloured racing bike and also in-scene it into a situation in a vignette, therefore the single bike could enter the coloured category and the vignette…you know what we mean.
- One clear image of the speeder bike with the minifig riding it
- The entry has to be submitted to the LSB group and posted in the entries thread.
- Once an entry has been submitted it’s locked, which means changing or replacing afterwards leads to disqualification.

Judges

Cole Bl♠q _zenn Pasukaru

Changes in the rules might happen if the rules have to be clarified.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors, Chromebricks for the new chrome bricks, Perron 4 for the impulse sets and FBTB for adding Luke's Landspeeder set (8092).

And thanks to Eurobricks for getting us on the frontpage.

More great news...things are getting HOT!

FBTB is also supporting this contest and adds a brand new Luke's Landspeeder set to the vignette first place prize. I am totally blasted:-) What's better than stepping up from a speeder bike to a landspeeder and it's also so classical, going along with the stormtrooper.

Is Count Dooku's Speeder considered a speeder bike?

Lastly, Is Darth Maul's speeder considered a speeder bike?

Take a look at the group's photostream to get a impression of what speederbikes are. Count Dooku's and Darth maul's bikes are perfect example as for bikes, the seating arrangement doesn't matter. Freeco's speeder however is more the equivalant of a landspeeder/starfighter, thus not a bike.

Mods can enter as long they're not judges. Yeah they're definitely fun to build.

a) Cutting - yes
b) Painting - yes
c) Non-Lego - yes
d) Stickers - yes
e) Digital rendering - yes
As this should be clear, it's about the use and integration of modified parts. Use for the final touch is good, but as a basic structure or a too dominating part it wouldn't be Lego anymore and this is about Lego Speeder Bikes ;-)

That's a good link.

Also I'd recommend everyone who isn't sure about what a speederbike is, check out some older discussion in this thread and you'll get a clearer vision.

Only minifigs - No technic, Jack Stone, Belville, Scala, torch and alarm clock figs, nor do microfigs count.
But Fabuland would be totally OK or some kind of brick assembled alien fitting the scale of the standard minifigs. I wouldn't even mind if you do a Jabba or Rotta speeder bike...

By standard means it would be L-W-H, but if one wants to make a width or height emphasized bike, the perimeters can be flipped side- or upwards.

Thanks for hosting the contest again this year.

"All over paint jobs are welcome in any category."

That makes sense in Military and Vignette categories.. but you may want to reconsider for the Color Me Fascinated category. If the challenge is to build with the "rare (and therefore part limited) colours", allowing all-over paint would defeat that purpose. People could avoid the challenge of having to use rare colors parts entirely by just painting them that way.

FirstInfantry says:

What qualifies as an old build? I wish to use a version of my BARC speeder, but in new trim and with a sidecar, in the vig category. Would this be allowable? Also, is it considered to fit a standard fig, as you have to mount the legs on the pedals and the body on the seat without the hip piece?

Finally, will we be penalized or rewarded for creating a replica of a Star Wars or similar bike? Is it better to design a custom bike yourself than try and build to an existing design (not in the brick design, in the canon design)?
29 months ago (permalink)

view photostream

Cole Blaq is a group administrator Cole Blaq says:

Sure, you can use any color for highlights.

A remake of an old bike with a new paint job and hanges is totally fine. Taking the fig apart, in order to clip the legs sideways - like on a saddle - is totally OK, as long the configuration is still basically a minifig.
Replicas of existing (non-lego) speeder bike concepts are totally ok. But that replica should be top-notch if to compete with original (newly invented) designs.

I think that you might have a few pieces in one of the rare colors - even just a few of some of them - at least some trans (-coloured) parts. You can make a speeder bike with 3 or 4 special parts on top. The underlying structure (secondary color) can be any colour.
The idea behind this is to make something with limited parts available - that's the challenge.
But if you don't feel good with this category there are still two other categories to enter.

My speeder is almost the maximum dimensions at 18x10x6. It is hard to get that into a 16x16 vignette. I see that you have stated that 16x16 is the rough dimensions of the vignette with some leeway. I have a build that is has a base of 24x12, but has parts that angle out such that if you look straight down on it it is about 24x20 or maybe 24x22. Would that be disqualified? I see you disqualified a couple people already and want to make sure if I submit this it won't be joining that group.
29 months ago (permalink)

view photostream

Cole Blaq is a group administrator Cole Blaq says:

The disqualifiactions in the beginning was to let people now upfront that there are some certain rules.
The vignette size was just an orientation. By now I see most vignettes will be bigger - which is totally OK. A 32x32 baseplate might not be considered as a vignette anymore, but below there's plenty of space.
So your size of 24x22 would be totally ok.

sweetfennel says:

If you get disqualified, is that it?
Are you allowed to fix the violation?
Are you allowed to enter a different, rules-compliant speeder?

I ask because I've read through the thread and I believe I have a good grasp on the rules. But if I missed something or misunderstood something, it would be really disappointing to be disqualified for a mistake with no way to correct the mistake.

Thanks for your time.

P.S. Does bright green count as rare? There's fewer parts in bright green than sand green, sand blue, medium blue, dark tan, dark orange, and dark pink. Thanks again!

There has been no disqualification for vignettes being larger than 16x16 so far. The 16x16 is a rough guideline. That means it is okay if it's bigger, it just shouldn't get too big, otherwise it wouldn't be a vignette anymore.

Good question.
I wouldn't count police as military as those two are / should be seperated. Even in most Sci-Fi films police has clear markings for keeping peace purpose, while the military has a war-related purpose, no matter how some countries use the police for internal warfare.
So, no police bike in the military category please.

I don't really get the first question. The vignette is the main prize as it it the biggest and maý include more than one speeder bike.
Sure thing about posting your speeder bike elsewhere, but it should be submitted to the pool of this group too and also it shouldn't be used in other contests for reasons of fairness.
