It's amazing the crap that comes out of some people's mouths and/or keyboards. As most of you know, it's not just Flickr that attracts the crapheads. What daft discussions have you fallen into, here or on blogs or message bases?

(Remember to check whether it's publicly viewable or members' only, if you're going to give a link.)

Latest one I've witnessed elsewhere: the lashback from wskrz' Jenny McCarthy says a gluten-free diet cures autism? Bunk! blog entry. Some people get fanatical, I tell ya!

Here on Flickr: there are so many, but they almost always involve a guy by the name of Steve and are usually in FlickrCentral or I've Been Banned. Currently people overreacting to the Orkut flap [YES, I feel it's wrong to swipe pictures; YES, it's very wrong to sexualize small children; but NO, freaking out about what Flickr is going to do about Orkut or tarbrushing that site isn't going to fix anything, and Flickr admins who've spoken up have said exactly that -- quoting one, "cram it wherever your culture believes in craming things"]. Formerly it was about Censrship, which happily has passed (the flap, not the blocking in repressed countries).

CnA: Life, they have none.

Anita: That's how it goes. What amuses me is that in doing a WHOIS to find out when the domain name will expire (since the end of the post says he's turned down offers to buy the site because he knew those folks would only turn it into a traffic cow) I saw two things: first, a public WHOIS fails presently because in the wake of his announcement the domain collectors have started circling so the number of inquiries in a day has been exceeded; second, a cached WHOIS (thanks Google) reveals he owns the name until.... 2016. He bought the name for ten years ($82 from whiz.in) but only used it for two years afterwards?

[an hour later] Fudge. Not So Motivational is throwing in the towel, too.

"What should I buy with my tax refund?"
community.livejournal.com/appleworld/1302100.html

I would kill a hobo to have that much money right now. I didn't get paid last month because my workstudy boss forgot to turn in our timesheets, and I have to pay the school for the single room I had to move into this semester.
admin
TheDamnMushroom 9 years ago
Hobos don't have that kind of money. :-D Go after one of those people on the LJ page who are getting the kind of refund that inspires talking about purchasing consumer electronics like that, and tell the court after that you need it for more worthwhile pursuits.

Re FFC--"a full time job and a career"? With any luck, the two overlap, so what's why repeat redundantly (again and again).

Sorry about the stupid boss--that totally sucks ass. Plus, I don't see why you should have to bear the brunt of this: it means you worked for free...surely the college has some sort of anti-slavery policy.

I love that people feel the need to spend their tax refund. I got nearly $500 back. You know where that's going? My fucking savings account and it's staying there.

C&A: Good for you. You recall last year when we got stimulus checks, and Shrub told us we weren't supposed to save it -- it needed to be spent frivilously? :-D

Anita: The original post (which is still up, and has one reply saying "mmm, my ex liked that, can we talk?") was found in Small breasts appreciation group, which is why that little point *giggle* was made. Guess the idea was to make a kinky and bestial request relevant to the group. :)

Update on one item posted earlier... I don't know if the admin of The Forgotten realized she was being a whiner, but she did eventually delete her "I'm gonna delete this group if you don't play my games" discussion post. However, two weeks ago she proposed a scavenger hunt... which has had one reply, yesterday, two weeks later, 'surprised' no one has responded. :-D

Can someone just tell her that not all communities need discussion that the photos should be the discussion?
admin
TheDamnMushroom 9 years ago
I tried. I think I mentioned it before: she was complaining that people didn't play her games so she didn't know how to amuse people, and I said that people weren't in that group to be amused by discussion base games -- they were there for photos. I have no idea how many photos she's ever submitted to the group. ;-)

It's kinda weird when the only person not serious about photos in a group designed for photos (unlike "Anime Psycho-logists" or "Crazy Nuts - Invite your friends!" where it's mostly talk) is the administrator.

Comments from one guy on the 8 photos someone with the word "slut" in her username had in her stream, which contains no nudes or other people. She told me she finds him "annoying" and said I could make fun of him. So:

Someone in an artistic-pics pregnancy photos group noticed that the admin of the group is a guy who has naughty photos in his favorites, so a bunch of people are up in arms about the concept of leering... and have their panties in a wad because they have zero power to do anything about the admin being a human perv. The current admin got the position when the previous admin got deleted from Flickr (hmm, what was in his stream?) and it's unclear whether he actually admins though the group isn't rife with off-topics or porn. So some puritan's solution was to create another group as though there aren't already two dozen of them... curiously the creator is a big furry man and he admits he only gets on 3 times a week so won't actually be able to weed out undesireable pictures/people himself.

I'm always rippled by people whose attitude boils down to "everyone look at me.... wait, no, not you, I don't trust you, I mean other people come look at me."

Reported Stupid:

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090316/ap_en_ot/dora_for_tweens

I don't really see anything wrong with Dora, she still looks like a kid (like 10 maybe?), not a streetwalker. There must be some extremely conservative people complaining about her.
admin
TheDamnMushroom Posted 9 years ago. Edited by TheDamnMushroom (admin) 9 years ago
to say this about that...

a) I agree with Mattel/Nick's reasoning, that Dora is a wholesome character and it's nice that they want to offer a tweener version who is still wholesome. They made her as she'd be (if she existed) at 10, not a mallrat at 15, and I think they did a pretty good job with the draft.

b) While a few cartoon characters have been able to be aged without much controversy -- like the singing teen Pebbles & Bam-Bam cartoons of the 1970's (hell, many HB cartoons wound up having teens that sing, WTF?) -- most of the time commercial properties are devolved to increase the audience. Flintstones Babies, Muppet Babies, and half a dozen others took teen/adult cartoons and created kiddie versions. Was there a flap when those happened by the cartoon purists? Would that be de-sexing them?

c) Let's be totally honest here: How many of the people who are pooping their pants over the concept of a preteen Dora The Explorer have bought their daughters Barbies or have/will buy their daughters Bratz or similar "sexed-up" teen-themed dolls? Heee-po-cro-say.

Group: Shield of Excellence (gaack!)... but I saw the photo in a private humor group.

Story: Apparently this person had posted a photo from a gay pride event in the group without an invitation, so the group 'bot pitched it out with a passive-aggressive long whiny note.

Links: Just read the stupid comment or if you must have the whole Flickr page experience.

You guys are all rich! Most people here owns a iphone, a nice laptop, some even own multiple phones and laptops... XD I myself only got my DSLR and lenses in it's bag. My old Motorola phone broke so I ordered a new one but it's not even as expensive... =/ I also don't even own a laptop! Where do you guys all come up with all this money... Jeeze hook me up!

----

"I only got myself a DSLR". A lot of them cost more than a laptop and def. more an iPhone. And most of the people have laptops in the group because they're students or they use them for work, and they either work for them, or they use their credit cards to buy them. Someone's just jealous.

Okay, so this particular interaction isn't public but that's as it should be:

I admin an adult non-nude group, and there's one particular person who posts the same nude & semi-nude photos of this woman everywhere. The sticking points for me are:
#1 - He has more than one account to do this, under different names. In fact, yesterday the count was up to four. And they've all been in existance since 2007. But they all contain the same years-old photos, leading to duplicates in the group.
#2 - Said photos are so highly Photoshopped that it's painful to look at them. Revising the last sentence above: they all contain the same absurd pictures, leading to duplicate shit in the group. Not one detail about them -- face, parts, background, all edited separately -- are as they originally existed in some universe many years ago. The group does have a "no fakes or overedited pictures" rule.

So it was months ago, maybe a year, that I had banned three of those identities and dropped the photos, and didn't hear a peep from him or anyone about it. Or until identity number four (I knew he'd be back someday!) popped up to add one of the same-old's, which I did a kickban on when I saw it the next day since I'd been off the grid and out of town overnight. This afternoon I got a seven letters across two words email from ident #4, the first word starting with the letter F. Guess he noticed this time. *grin*
