July 7, 2007 marks the midpoint of the Millennium Development Goals target period.
This provides a vital opportunity for the global community to pause and assess our progress and future work towards meeting the Goals by 2015.
Evaluating Progress
Progress toward achieving the MDGs has been mixed.
The midpoint mark presents an opportunity to review policies in those countries where the MDGs are likely to be achieved by 2015, and determine how that success can be replicated in other countries.
Director of the Millennium Campaign, Salil Shetty, emphasizes the significance of governance and accountability in the achievement of the MDGs. "Good governance entails a need for a process that connects policy-makers to the grass roots, ensuring that governments follow through on their stated commitments to international declarations".
Those countries that are on their way to succeed demonstrate that there is a strong correlation between MDG progress and donor adherence to the recommendations set out in Goal 8. Where development assistance has addressed the recipient country's unique needs, has matched with its self-identified development priorities, and is untied, progress has been most successful. In addition, governments in developing countries that are committed to poverty alleviation and have high standards of accountability and transparency are making sustainable progress towards the MDGs.
What is happening around the world?
LIVE EARTH 7-7-7
On 7 July 2007, there will be Live Earth concerts in nine venues: New York, London, Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, Rio De Janeiro, Hamburg, China and Tokyo. Anyone around the world with an Internet connection will be able to go online and view the concerts, as well as an extensive collection of interactive media put together by Save Our Selves (SOS) that will entertain, educate, inspire and ultimately drive change.
GCAP Continues
The Millennium Campaign has been one of the most pervasive campaigns in global history to "stand up against poverty". It works through the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP). A worldwide alliance of development NGOs, trade unions, and faith-based organizations, GCAP is one of the major actors in the ongoing effort to eradicate poverty. The GCAP agenda focuses on governance, transparency, and accountability, with priorities in the following areas:
One UN: Consolidating the MDG Movement
In 2006, Secretary-General Kofi Annan established a High-Level Panel to explore how the United Nations system could work more coherently and effectively across the world in the areas of development, humanitarian assistance and the environment. From this emerged a call for `One UN'. Eight pilot countries - Albania, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Pakistan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uruguay, and Vietnam – were selected to test ways in which the various UN agencies and programs can improve coordination and cohesion on the ground.
Civil Society Development Forum
From 28-30 June, CONGO will be hosting a civil society forum on the MDGs, focusing on this year's theme of poverty, hunger and pro-poor growth. The forum precedes ECOSOC's Annual Ministerial Review on the MDGs, and will increase inclusiveness and mobilize NGOs and partners to contribute to the implementation of the international development agenda.
ECOSOC Ministerial Review and Innovation Fair
ECOSOC is holding its first Annual Ministerial Review on 3-4 July 2007 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The topic is "Strengthening efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, including through the global partnership for development". Participants will have the opportunity to learn from policy makers, practitioners and academics about strategies and approaches to effectively reduce poverty and exchange lessons learned about overcoming the obstacles encountered in implementing national development strategies.
ECOSOC is hosting Innovation Fair as a parallel event to the AMR session. The Fair will showcase innovative best practices by NGOs and businesses towards the achievement of the MDGs.

Africa and the MDGs
UN Report
At the midway point between their adoption in 2000 and the 2015 target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, sub-Saharan Africa is not on track to achieve any of the Goals. Although there have been major gains in several areas and the Goals remain achievable in most African nations, even the best governed countries on the continent have not been able to make sufficient progress in reducing extreme poverty in its many forms.
This is the opening of the latest report by the UN on the half-way stage in the process of achieving the MDgs. The four page report (in PDF format) goes into detail about the level of achievement on the individual goals in Africa.
