Flipbac on a LX3

Dave Kee 1:26am, 18 November 2008
I received my Flipbac today (see www.flipbac.com/ ) and so far I like it. WARNING: It does block a little of the view on the sides in 3:2 and 16:9 aspect modes. I shoot 4:3 at all times so no problem for me. Also it is important to understand that it is simply a mirror, and therefore your view looking down is upside down like the old groundglass days on a view camera.

Thanks for posting this. It looks great actually I shoot 4:3 most of the time as well, that's the only ratio where you get 10MP.

But can it be removed when you don't need it, or is it permanently attached with sticky tape?

Catrike98, the VF and lens adapter designs are similar. Where do you get them from?

I don't think they are similar, it looks to me like it's just black duck tape wrapped around both the VF and the adapter. But I could be wrong!

Answers: It is permanent (no on and off), but a good lcd protector. Costs $25 (USD) w/shipping. The viewfinder is an antique ZEITAR (for Leicas) off eBay. Yeah, its just gaffer tape.

@GuessWaT: It works pretty well at about 41mm. It was a one off antique on ebay for $44. These ( cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TELE-WIDE-BRIGHT-VIEWFINDER-FOR-RANGE-FI... ) come up frequently at a buy now price of $25. I have one ordered and will report on it when it gets here.

I just got my Flipbac today, and although it's far from a perfect fit on the LX3, it is not bad at all. The way it fits on theLX3's LCD is that the Flipbac is not quite wide enough, it does cut off 1mm on each side of the 3:2 and 16:9 views. It's a bit too high for the LCD, it sticks out 4mm above the LCD.

Said that the price is very good and I would recommend it to every one who shoots low angle shots. It's not thick and is good protection for your LCD as well. Sure you have to flick it out every time you want to take a shot and tweak the settings, but I don't mind that.

I have been reading about people having problems seeing their LCD in bright sunlight. The Flipbac really helps in those conditions because it blocks a lot of the ambient light. Again it does take some getting used to since it is just a mirror and the view is "upside down" like a ground glass screen on a view camera

Does anyone have this back on an LX2/D-lux3 if so I'd really like to know before I buy.... I don't need it for my LX5 as I own the LVF1

Does it look like it would be possible to get it off without scratching the camera if one wanted to remove it at some future time?
