A friend asked about how effective is VR when working in Macro range. So I did some test.

You decide for yourself from photos below. And also the test was not done properly too. Please don't use it as reference, LOL :)

All photos from Nikon D80, Nikkor 105mm VR, f/9, 1/10 sec, SB-800 from top left of subject, handheld. Click on photos for larger view.

What's my opinion?

This test was done at 1/10 sec to make sure I cannot make my hand steady all the time. And you can see that VR really help increase number of usable photos. !!

One more thing, VR is much more useful when you use this lens as short telephoto.

i'll have to do my test tomorrow....lol...
glad i have never turned it off so far though.....hahaha....

yeah, keep it on as long as you're not using tripod :)

We canon users haven't got VR on any of Canon Macro lenses.
admin
kktp_ PRO 10 years ago
well, VR is not a deal breaker for macro anyway :)
ME Fagiri 10 years ago
true, I agree with that unless you are catching a flying insect or something like that in a low light with a slowish shutter speed

see thats just what i thought.....just one question, do u think it makes much of difference when we solely use natural lights comparing with using a speedlight?

Im sure helen's test will be with natural light so im gonna wait til she has done her test :P

thanks for doing this test K! ;)

It will help with slow shutter speed, but it cannot do anything with moving subject !

i used speedlight because there's so little light when i did this. But okay, i did another test ....

kktp_ PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by kktp_ (admin) 10 years ago
Now only natural light, and i pushed it a bit more and did this at slower shutter speed, now at 1/5 sec.

and with the famous"N" lens cap as subject :)

Click on photo to see it larger.

VR On

See the different? I cannot made consistent sharp photo even with VR On, but clearly there's a lot of improve over those photos without VR.

oh man.....now i want that 105 VR even more! *sigh*

too many things i want.....not enough money.....

maybe i can sell my kidney?? :P

ask yourself how often you will use that slow shutter speed, hand held? is it worth the price? :)
.natasha. 10 years ago
Thanks so much for that :) I have been thinking about getting the 105mm but wondering about all the reviews saying that VR is largely ineffective for macro use. This is great!

kktp_ PRO 10 years ago
you'll need tripod anyway when you do "serious macro". that way, VR won't help you one bit. but for casual shots that most of us do, VR can really increase the "hit rate". VR is one of the thing that "marketing hype" and "it's really work" go together very well :)
admin
Kiwi_GaL PRO 10 years ago
hmm thats true....considering how aweful the weather here is....i would prefer to use the tripod anyway eventho i hate lugging that thing around....

i think upgrading to D700 will be higher up in my priority list now :P

One thing to be fair to some other Macro Lenses out there. Nikkor 105mm VR is quite heavier than the rest. It will depends on user if more weight will give you steadier or shakier hands :)

Nikkor 105mm VR : 760g
Tamron 90mm : 405g
Sigma 105mm: 450 g

I can test more with my Tamron and love to see result from some other lenses too :)

thanks for doing the test helen! i think im gonna have to stick with my tripod with my sigma then....at least until i got enough money to upgrade my equipment lol :P
sharaff 10 years ago
woah. this is some help. very good side by side tests, and obvious results.
i never had it tested my self like this, but i do see big change when i keep it on. like on this one www.flickr.com/photos/shoken/2292820357/

the focusing is a bit slower, thats all. other than that i guess it works well enough.
admin
~ geisha ~ PRO 10 years ago
i always manual focus the macros anyway...so the focussing doesn't bother me... :)
sharaff Posted 10 years ago. Edited by sharaff (member) 10 years ago
~ geisha ~ as for me, i keep it in auto focus mode, over-ride the auto if needed.

VR nicely explained.

yep that's the way you work on af-s lens.

helen, you should praactice on that.
admin
~ geisha ~ PRO 10 years ago
yeah....but its sorta slow....and i am impatient...lol...
sometimes i don't know what the hell it focussed on, coz it's all blurred...lol...
admin
..karen.. 10 years ago
Certainly looks like the VR makes a difference ... I'm so shaky anyway I still need a tripod .. can't justify another lens ;) .........

~ geisha ~ haha helen

sometimes i don't know what the hell it focussed on, coz it's all blurred...lol...

Thanks, Daniel, you have very steady hands :)

No problem.. and thank you ;)

PS It does say in the instruction booklet that each person will have different results with VR and it depends on your shooting style.. all I know is that I love my 105 VR :)

man,.......you are cool hand luke!!!!!!....
mine are a total blur...lol....
maybe i should take some sedatives or something.....
errr.......or maybe less coffee......ahem....lol
admin
..karen.. 10 years ago
lol ...maybe its the coffee ...

there is no way mine are as clear as that ...
PixelBoxPhoto PRO 10 years ago
Yeah it could be the coffee.. I don't drink much coffee in the summer time.. but I did drink a Glaceau Vitamin Water that has alot of caffeine, ginseng, and guarana.. so I was twitching LOL

Kiwi_GaL PRO 10 years ago
i totally can't tell all that much difference....both pics with VR on & Off looks pretty good to me....

you must have a very steady hands daniel.....i think im stuck with my tripopd anyway because i dont have a very steady hands...and i usuallt rely on having good lights when im shooting macros lol

same with me....when i shoot AF with mine sometimes its totally blurred and i have no freakin clue what im looking at! hahahaha :P

ditto! i think its the coffee! LOL :P

if possible, i'd love to see you do this test again in slower shutter speed. 1/60 is not fast but still handheldable, coffee or not coffee :)
PixelBoxPhoto PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by PixelBoxPhoto (member) 10 years ago
well the rule of thumb is the shutter speed should match or beat the focal length.. 1/60 @ 105 should result in blur so it would really be pushing it but now I am curious too! so when I get some time on my hands I think I will do another test with slower shutter ;)
admin
kktp_ PRO 10 years ago
i actually got result just like yours with that 1/60. that's why i did my test at 1/5 and 1/10. VR will really shine only when you break the rule of shaky thumbs :) looking forward to see more of your test :)

~ geisha ~ PRO 10 years ago
i did one at f/5 first....and they were all clear too...so i changed to f/10
