Hi! I'm Sandy!

I look like this. Except I'm usually not blue and have no horns. I do still smoke, though...

My name is Melanie. I tried to take fireworks photos for the first time this past Saturday. I think I started to get the hang of it near the end (it was only a 10 minute show) but when I looked back at my photos, I think I prefer the ones that didn't "work". They look like outer space!

My name's Sean and I help set them off sometimes. I've got about 400 pics from the 4th and 5th that I'm going through. A lot of mutants, wild stuff.

ScallyW 10 years ago
Hi, I'm Scally.

Not really sure what constitutes a firework 'mutant' as to me almost all photos of fireworks look good. Just posted some photos I took yesterday of my local 'fiesta' on the beach - which were taken from my balcony, so there may be silhouettes of rooftops and chimneys visible somewhere - but I wasn't in a position to get a clear shot of all of them. Quite liked how some of them came out even so.

Well, if you go and look at the regular fireworks groups they all have these very still, perfect, symmetrical lines of light perfectly exposed and balanced and composed and radiating from a central source in neat little groups. There are thousands and thousands of these shots and they all look exactly the same.

BORING!

That's not what fireworks *feel* like at all, I wanted a group that captured the atmosphere of a firework show, and it's ALWAYS the "mistakes" that do this best. I'm really glad I opened this group as some of the shots are truly inspiring and make me feel like I was there. I can smell the gunpowder! Even if it's just a few strange scribbly lines of light somehow it looks more energetic and alive.

Hi Sandy, great idea for this group, I'm Ed.. just posted a picture from a very small display at a hotel we stayed at in Okinawa, Japan.. I have to say, the picture looks much more exciting than watching the live display!

Hi all, I'm Lynda, from England. Took some photos for the first time this year - some in my son's back garden and some in our local park at the annual display. The park ones all came out fuzzy, but with a crowd of thousands and nowhere to stand my little tripod, I thought they came out rather interestingly. And photos don't always need to be perfect. They can be fun too. Happy snapping.

Hi, I'm Justin.
I'm a technical amateur with a professional heart and lots of sub-par equipment, but I think my pics come out well considering.
My fireworks shots were taken in San Antonio, and I have many more that I'll post later on.

Hi, I'm Kay,
I'm amazed I got any photos at all! I live in Minnesota - mosquito country - and was eaten alive while snapping these photos!! Yes, Indeed, I was a true Minnesota blood donor that night!!
I was pleased to see you were looking for "strange" firework photos - as I found mine turned out to be quite "strange!" Yet, fascinating at the same time. A total surprise as to how they turned out.

MaggyN PRO 6 years ago
Hi, I'm Maggy, and I'm pleased to find this group - I discovered that taking photos of fireworks whilst standing on tiptoes with the lens pointing through a small gap between two window frames does not lead to perfect firework photos! However, I actually rather like how some of them turned out. They are more "paintings in light" than photos of fireworks though. Some lovely photos on this site:)

Pixel-Pusher Posted 4 years ago. Edited by Pixel-Pusher (member) 4 years ago
Hi, I'm Pixel-Pusher and I really enjoy photographing fireworks.
I like capturing the smoke and plasma; so the concept of a Firework Mutants group is very appealing to me. I promise not to put any rosettes into this group.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump "Fireworks are like a box of chocolates, cause you never know what your going to get".

While shutter speed has a major impact on the style of a fireworks photograph, I seem to be one of the few photographers on the planet to understand that if there are no stationary objects in a fireworks photo, shutter speed has almost NO EFFECT on the exposure!
That's right. You are photographing incredibly hot, self illuminating, rapidly moving, point sources of light; and normal exposure rules simply do not apply. Your proper exposure is controlled by ISO & aperture as always + distance, camera resolution and the effective focal length of your lens + a few other things that are relatively constant. Good exposure allows me to get colors which aren't burned out. A quality camera allows me to simultaneously get both smoke and plasma.

On rare occasions I photoshop the bejeebers out of the colors; but for the most part the colors in my fireworks photos are quite real.
