An icon represents something meaningful.

We are looking for letters that are "pictures" with a meaning. (The letter itself should be in some way a picture, it should not just come with an accompanying picture). I will not post this N, because the dog is not part of the letter, just sitting in front of it:

Netto dog

It may turn out it's not always easy to draw the line between what is a meaningful picture-letter and what is "just prettified" - I'd say most iconic letters could be sorted in as "decorated letters" but not all decorated letters are "iconic letters". The key is the meaning of the picture - and since this may not always be obvious from just the single letter, please provide the context in the description (or in this thread).

Actually, it strikes me that the Ä I bought to complete my iconic alphabet, is just decorated - as long as it there's not a context. It's an Ä and it's a picture - but there is no meaningful connection with anything.

Ä - bought a kiddie letter

I asked Leo for the Angel A.

Now, looking for an interesting icon for B (while I add a bit more to the theme description).

Can't post another one in the pool so I'll post it here. Bannatynes is a health club.

B

Nice! I've got a B, but I don't think it's all that interesting, so I'm waiting. Perhaps for one of Claude's Théatre de Bastille Bs. We'll see.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Rootytootoot has a nice iconic B, too ... hope he/she checks in soon ...

By the way, the group description below the widget still has the metal letters content.

Wow! The requirement that the letter have a meaning really brings this into line with the formal definition of "icon" (Merriam-Webster: "a sign (as a word or graphic symbol) whose form suggests its meaning"). But it also makes this alphabet harder than I thought. My M and O, for instance, would be knocked out of the running because they're simply "decorated" and not "iconic" under this definition.

And yes, I may have gone too far in my definition zeal. We started out talking about iconic/pictorial - which would include all our cute animal letters: my Ä, cutesmallfuzzy's M and O (btw, a worm is "mask" in Swedish, so the M picture would have an appropriate meaning).

But to begin with I wsn't at all thinking of the "decorated" aspect - and when urbanmkr raised the question I wanted to maske sure to exclude the "flowers-and-ribbons" (not looking at the decorated theme her, but thinking of my own preconception of "decorated"). I may have gone too far. We'll see how the theme develops. No shortage of pictorial letters, I'm sure.

Good! I'd rather someone else posted...

L is for StapLes

M m

That K you invited is great, Eva. I did some Googling and found out that it's the logo for Kidd Valley Burgers & Shakes in Washington State.

Love the Staple L as well.
And Mother's high-heels for an M isn't bad either.

O o

Wish I could remember where I took those letters. I should have been smarter and tagged them.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I always try to remember taking a context shot as well. That is: I try, not sying I always succeed :-) Any way, context shots are "cheap" with a digital camera - and I've always been a lousy note taker.

You seem to have letters of those "wrapped persons" to spell SANITAIRE or something like that.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
O should be the easiest of them all - although an Iconic O as a single letter might be hard to recognize as a letter, like this apple O:

Well, either Monceau posts the R from the leather series, or Claudecf posts the Rotisserie R. But then, of course, you cannot post an S…

this pharmaceutical A stands in whole austria and i guess also in germany for APOTHEKE (=pharmacy). a rare exampel of an official iconic letter. is this also a letter for apotek in sweden, eva?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes it is.
And it's a lovely A!!

i have uploaded an U for underground (station) if you don't mind.

Vv
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Well, U stands for underground, of course - but the letter should also depict the concept in some way - and I need an explanation to understand this one.
aristide 10 years ago
you're right, it's not a picture but a sculpture so i will delete it.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Well, it could be a sculpture, too - but it has to represent something (etwas vorstellen), in this case something underground-related, thats what I could not see. I may come crawling back and beg for this U if it turns out to be hard to find another. So far, however, I'm happy not to have it as iconic - but we can do a 3D-theme soon (that's among the revisit-able oldies).
aristide 10 years ago
perhaps the two windows are representing the terminals of the route? but as this is a very far-fetched interpretation i'll let it be.

Hmm. I thought X would be easy. Leo' s got a fishtail X for PEX=fish that I've tried to nudge him into posting. Urbanmkr's got a meXican X. For the rest the iconic Xes are well hidden indeed.

I've got two different ((guess only one is uploaded), because of the unfair advantage that scissors=saX in Swedish.
