Let's go on a night-time photo stroll down Christmas Tree Lane, one of the bigger and better holiday light displays in the Bay Area? Every single home on the block of Thompson Avenue between High Street & Fernside on the east side is totally done up [articles in Alameda Magazine and the Chronicle], and Santa and an elf or two are usually set up on the median for photo ops.

Details:
Tuesday, December 19 , 7pm at Peet's [Park & Central], drink warm things and chat, then head out by 7:30 to walk over to Thompson to shoot Santa.
I'm up for re-warming with a brew at Spiesekammer afterward if anyone's interested.

one thing about the lights, i think they tend to have more lights on during the weekends. so the friday night might be best for seeing the most decorations.

I'm up for it. Any time is fine, but I can only make Mon-Wed, since I'm leaving town on Thu/21.

I tried shooting holiday lights in L.A. over Thanksgiving weekend. It's like fireworks, except the lights are much dimmer, so even in long exposures they hardly light up the surroundings. I did not get any good shots handheld; I notice that the non-flash shots in the two articles you mention are all blurred. For it to turn out nicely, I expect you need either a tripod and separate exposures for the lights and the background, or some serious flash.

I hope to be fully recovered from food poisoning by next week, so would be up for this. 7 or 7:30 works best for me. I'm flex on Peets v. Speisenkamer (sp?), but will cast a tie-breaking vote if needed.

Great idea. I have no clue how to shoot lights and was walking down Thompson yesterday wondering what it is required to get a good shot. I will try to join up.

Planet Vicster says:

Short answer on shooting lights: either a high ISO setting (at least 400 but more like 800, though on film you start to get grain and on digital you get...noise I guess) or bring a tripod. Or go for some artistic blur. Or, be crazy and try all three (at least you can change your ISO around on digital...we film shooters don't have that flexibility :-( )

Lane, I was assuming that many people would have holiday madness throughout the weekend...we went on a weeknight last year and it was still pretty spectacular in its excess. Plus it'll hopefully be less of a zoo on an off night and less chance of having toddlers run into our tripods...

Would love to join you all but it is a busy week for me. I am not even going to add more preferences to sort through. I will just keep my eye on this thread and show up if I can.

I'm going to try to actually make this... even though my camera takes notoriously noisy night shots.

Spiesekammer is a bit pricey for my budget (hell.. JitB Value Menu is these days), but I might hang out a bit.

If I'm able to make it, would the 51 (AC Transit) get me there from Oakland? I learned this past weekend that you can't trust the maps. (confirmed by a driver and a few passengers on the bus I was riding)

Yes, the 51 will drop you off a block from Peet's. It goes on Webster, then follows Santa Clara all the way down the island. Get off when it turns onto Park and walk a block from the rear of the bus [away from Oakland], Peet's is on the next corner.

Sounds fun. I hope to meet you guys there, as long as work and gift-shopping doesn't interfere.

Technically you are all there by now... but I'm not going to make it.

I got canned today, and am not really feeling very social.

Hope to meet you all next time.

Well, I'm back from the Meet and put a few pix up. It was really good to see everyone- I got to see Gwen and Vicster from before, and got to meet a bunch of new folk. It was a really nice evening. Can't wait to see what y'all post!

I also had a good time meeting Ed, Patrick, Tausha, Victoria, and Steve, and getting to know everyone else better. Some amusing decorations they put up too. My photos are posted now to my stream:

vertigo25, I'm really sorry to hear the bad news. That's some nerve to do it right before Christmas. Hope things look better in the new year.

Vertigo25 that bites, I feel your pain, and the timing couldn't be worse.

Gwen & Co, I am sorry I missed the meet up and it was only a block from my house, but I forgot it was date night with my wife and we were not back until nearly 9pm. I look forward to viewing your shots.

aw vertigo25, that totally and completely sucks. I've been through that, though not at this time of year. I'm very sorry. And more than a little pissed off at your bosses for their timing.

It was a great time last night! Not sure when I'll have anything up because while I was trying to rewind the film, my rewind knob broke off. :-((( So I have no idea if I can get the film OUT of the camera without exposing it.

jspace, sorry you didn't make it, but date night with the SO trumps a chilly photo stroll.
