Hi folks,

So the 52 by 52 journey has almost come to an end. There are so many people that I want to give special thanks to but I don’t want this to turn into an over-long Oscar acceptance speech, so before I get teary and start thanking second cousins…I would just like to say that the way in which the community has come together and supported and constructively criticised each others work has been the most satisfying part of the endeavor for me. At the outset I couldn't have imagined that the project would have attracted such a high caliber of challenge setters or the standard of the work submitted would have been so consistently outstanding.
--

Wrapping up year one
In principal the last challenge of year one (Y1) of 52 by 52 (52) would be due in Thursday 30th August 2012. But to close the Y1 group to submission would seem unfair to those of us yet to complete all of the challenges and those members who have only recently joined. On the other hand leaving the group permanently open to submissions could well create an industrial wasteland of a group, with weeds growing between the cracks.

So we're going to keep the 52 Y1 pool open to entries up to the end of this year, so the 31st December 2012 - that's about 17 weeks after the last challenge. Mark will be posting a few threads in the coming days and weeks reflecting on the project, we'd love to hear what you have to say.
--

Members' Book
The creation of a book by and for the 52 members would seem like a fitting memento for Y1, so that's the plan! It will be a non-profit venture created using Blurb and sold at cost price plus a £1 donation to www.photovoice.org. It's really a way of commemorating the project and saying thank you to the members that have taken part.

We'll be posting more details about the venture and how you might take part (we hope you want to!) in a thread before the last week finishes. I didn't want to overwhelm this post with too much information in one bite.
--

A 52 by 52 Book
It's very early days for this idea, but I've been thinking about the possibility of publishing a commercially available book of the challenges alongside an appropriate photo from the challenge setter themselves. It'll be a long road to travel to see this through. Standing at the starting line I must say I'm feeling overwhelmed and under-informed, but I figure…there's no harm in trying! For better or worse I'll let everyone know how I am progressing with this venture over the next few months.
--

Year Two
The comments in the recent Y2 thread started by scala66 have been really touching, thank you so much. What I'm thinking at the moment is to start Y2 once the Y1 group pool has closed at the end of 2012 – a fresh start for a new year. To ease some of the pressure off the 52 team the project could go fortnightly and so become 26 by 26.

We'll be keeping an eye on the pool and threads for a long time yet and will continue to keep everyone updated about the Y1&2 developments through Twitter, Facebook and the email mailing list.

Feedback
As always it’s great to get your feedback and in particular at the moment we would welcome any thoughts you have relating to the following:

- Is the Members' Book something you'd be interested in? (more details coming soon)
- How does the concept of 26 by 26 sound to you?
- Would you be interested in becoming a team member of that new group?

Also, we've six or so (free) 52 by 52 thank you postcards left, so please so contact us if you haven't already claimed one: hello@52by52.net. They're available to any member that's submitted more than a handful of photos to the group.

Once again thank you to everyone for helping create this community. Without it's members 52 simply wouldn't exist, the time and effort you've donated to the project is a constant source of wonder! Also I think Julia and Mark deserve special thanks for all the work they've put into the project, particularly the commenting and community aspects.

Dave

*UPDATE*
The Members' Book group is now closed for submissions and the 52 by 52 team have the difficult task of selecting work from the fantastic entries, with 564 photos to choose from it will take a few weeks. As soon as we've made the final selection we'll drop members who's submissions have been selected for the book an email with further details. Thank you for all the wonderful work submitting and for your patience while it's selected. We can't wait to see it come together towards the end of the month!

hey all, i think most of the above sounds great and very interesting. however, i think that with the response that this group has had of recent months, with new members becoming actively involved,it could be benificial to start the new year a lot earlier. 4 months is a long time to wait around for a group to restart.
also please try and keep it a weekly assignment. i think the urgency that goes with 52by52 has been whats made it for me.
all of the above has obviously been written in a highly selfish manner by me without knowing realisticly how much hard work goes into a group like this by the admin and mods.
so, once again , id like to thank you all and i look forward to whatever happens year 2.

Hi Dave,

My thoughts on the groups future:
1. definately interested in a members book
2. 26 by 26 sounds good, I like the idea of a longer reponse time and would perhaps improve some of my postings (if I haven't got anything by Monday I normally enter panic mode).
3. Like a major supermarket 'I'm always happy to help', so if I can be of any use for anything please let me know.

Thank you so much for all your hard work, I've loved the challenges.

Thank you so much, I haven't been as involved as I would have liked but thought the caliber of instructions and instruction givers was excellent as well as the community support. Personally 26x26 for me would be great and thank you for keeping things open until December. It has been great seeing how people with complete different styles and interests have interpreted each week!

Thank you so much for all the thought and hard work that's gone in to 52by52. In its present format it's been so enriching and stimulating an experience. I'd certainly purchase a book which encapsulates year 1 and would support whatever the year 2 format turns out to be. I've enjoyed the pressure of the deadlines, trying my best to meet the weekly challenge has been beneficial for my transit from full-time work to retirement - 52by52 has given me a focus which I love.
The community is generously supportive and a pleasure to be part of.
Forgive the gushing but it's just been great, thanks.

Keeping things open to December will be a most welcome move, I was lamenting the thought that I would have to forego some of the instructions but now have the second chance I was wishing for.

The book is a great idea and I would definitely treasure a copy to commemorate the experience.

26x26 - again, yes, the year of weekly challenges has been a challenge in itself (not altogether a bad thing, though) and the thought of a more leisurely deadline is an attratctive one. (I guess it wouldn;t be long though until I was wishing for a monthly brief).

Again, would like to take the opportunity of thanking you David, Julia and Mark for all your hard work and the rest of the group for your generous encouragement, honesty and inspiration.

Hi Dave/All ...

I'm quite sad this is coming to an end! So much enjoyment and learning!

I endorse and agree with all above - consistent message ...

Mainly I'd say:-,

1. I'm definately interested in a members' book - and probably a commecial versoin!

2. I like the idea of a 26 by 26 model, thus a longer reponse time .

I, too, would be very happy to help in some way ..

Finally, endorsing the others, thank you so much for all your hard work, the challenges were a great focus. The opprtunity to learn so much from others and to links with others has been (and will hopefully continue to be) marvellous.

I've gotten a bit behind in recent weeks so I really appreciate you keeping the pool open until December and I like the idea of starting again in the new year. It'll give everyone the chance to recharge batteries :) My biggest regret is that I didn't find the group earlier!

I'd be interested in a member's book as well. I'm also keen to continue in whatever format you decide but I too like the idea of 26 by 26 and a slightly longer deadline. This will give me a focus for next year too as I've been a bit scattered this year :) I'd also be happy to help in some way.

Thanks again for making this such an enjoyable project to be part of.

Dear David (and community members)

Wrapping up year one.
I will need a few weeks to complete the two challenges I have missed during the year. I know exactly what I want to shoot, but the setting up is taking time. Both are things I have never tried before so new experiences.

Member’s book
As you know I am a big supporter of this and you will have my assistance in its production.

52by52 book
The best of luck with this which I am sure will be a real success.

Year two
I think this is an interesting proposal, which will give members more thinking and shooting time and for those who like film, more time for development/production. At present I am thinking I will not participate in year two, as there are some ideas and projects I want to pursue. After two years doing three such challenge projects I am a little weary and I need to get some other things in my life balanced. Yet I have the words of a famous Olympian ringing in my ears about never being in another Olympics (Steve Redgrave), so I will watch with interest and maybe pop in occasionally.

Feedback
Lastly, I want to send out a BIG thank you to David Gillett, without whose vision, drive and determination this community would not exist. It has been a real pleasure working the David (and Julia Cameron) moderating the community, but all the real work has been at David’s door getting all the challenges from renowned photographers and setting up all the graphics, postings, etc.. It has been a real pleasure participating in the project and I hope the members of the community who have become friends and acquaintances in its duration, will continue to be so.

Best wishes
Mark

Dear All,

It was a sad moment to post the last Challenge and I'm sure that Thursdays won't be the same!

Members' Book
A great idea and any help in producing this will be happily given by me.

52 by 52 book
Sounds like a really great idea for a book. So many talented photographers between the covers...must be a good read!

Year 2
The slower pace of year 2 will give more time for collecting ideas and shooting.
Having participated in 2 years of weekly challenges, like Mark, I feel in need of a bit of consolidation and development time of my own practice. I do intend to have a go as and when it fits around my other work. I will keep in touch and add my usual daft comments to the pictures in the pool!

This year
I have enjoyed the variety of Challenges and the wonderful support of the community that has grown out of David's project. I use the term "David's project" advisedly as it has been he alone who has conceived the idea, developed the concept and collected together Challenges from a wide range of genres and photographers of international renown. For this I say a huge thanks.

It has been fun working as part of the team with David and Mark. I originally met Mark at a meeting of Street Photography Now Project members in London last year. Mark has brought his gentle humour to discussion threads and I had the pleasure to meet up with him again this year and talk about photography over a beer!

My earnest wish is that the friendships forged through the project will continue to grow and to flourish.

Thanks to all,
Julia

Hi Dave,
Firstly, big thanks to you and the 52X52 team for all the hard work you've put in!
I really enjoyed the challenges and the way that they went beyond street and into other genres. The talent and creativity of the members was wonderful, surprising and motivating.
Both the members book and the 26X26 ideas are great and I look forward to seeing how they progress over the coming months.
All the best for now...thanks again!

I found this group just six weeks ago, and I really regret that I didn't find it earlier. It's a fantastic group!

I would love to be a part of a year 2. I confess that a 26 by 26 version (fortnight challenges) would be better for me, however I will adapt myself to whatever comes next.

Thank you very much for all this work, and congratulations for your beautifully succeeded project.

David, a huge thanks from me for the concept and for your drive and enthusiasm in getting some great photographers to set such interesting challenges for us all. Take a short rest. I hope that you got enough out to the 52by52 (dare I say Year 1?) experience to make it worth your while.

I'm on for year 2!

Thanks to everybody for it all.
To David, Julia and Mark especially but also to every single photographer who contributed, whether one shot or many. Most amazingly those small few who did all the briefs. A stunning body of work.

I haven't put up as many shots as I would have liked. And like Mark at the moment I am not up for another year, in part because of the ideas and stimulation 52 by 52 has provided. I have to go off and deal with some of these ideas.

Good luck everybody. I will watch progress with interest.

David, Mark and Julia

A BIG thanks for the huge work you have done and for having support us with your very kind comments.

Bravo to all photographers ! It was a great pleasure to be a part of this adventure with a such a quality level. obviously I love the idea of the book, no better way to conclude this rich year.

And if by the greatest chance you go to Paris, let me know we could have the opportunity to discuss photography over a beer
