Group DescriptionThis group was formed to collect and display images of the many forms of Billiken during the year of it's centennial -- 2008. Any and all images of Billiken are welcome.
In 1908 Billiken was invented by Florence Pretz of Kansas City. Soon the Billiken fad swept the world and even took root far from its origins. For instance in Japan the Billiken has been enshrined and is venerated, and in Siberia the Billiken is believed by the Chukchi people to have been a talisman for the successful hunts of their ancestors. The Billiken may have been forgotten in the land of its birth (except in St. Louis of course!), but it lives on in far-off lands now a century after it was created.
For me, Billiken is simply a wonderful reminder that a hundred years will make anything venerable. Even a Billiken.
