I visited Kyoto in September 2010 for the first time at the end of a tiring 2,000km tour of Japan and just have to go back and spend more time there.

Can any of you more experienced folks offer any advice on some of the lesser known gems of Kyoto that are worth spending some time in?
Thanks

Hmm, since I wrote that a lot of water has flowed down the Kawagama, I have been back three more times in fact and no one has responded to my enquiry.

So here's something more specific:
Two years ago, I visited a wonderful garden at the rear of a very nice restaurant just north of the Pontocho. I remember going through a mall to get there and across a street with some fountains. The wall in front of the restaurant was impressive with a stone black wall. The garden had a small stream running through it. Does anyone recognise the description?
