I'm there. I'll be bringing my snowman mascot/test dummy.

Can I attend as an observer/assistant?
I'm in, and I'll bring various ornaments for the tree. Do we expect to get our holiday props back, or should we bring something we won't miss?

@njl-photolog: sure you can come and help assist, but why do you not want to shoot? you are a photographer, right? :)

@the original_funkytoaster: ornaments for the tree? how about you bring something that's actually fun as a prop :)
by the way sarah's tree is already fully loaded....

oh and to answer the other question..yes you get your props/decorations back
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
@metakephoto: yes, I have delusions of being a photographer. :o)
Daft as it may sound, I recently found I learn more about lighting by assisting and watching other photographers arranging lights than I do when "I'm on next" so to speak. There is less pressure to focus (if you pardon the pun) on my own concept/idea and how best to light it.
Plus, you set the limit on photographers, not on observers/assistants. ;-)

Oh and Nadia too:) haha
Ok, to be honest i'm having a massive flood of ideas sloshing in my head and I would like some help to get them all out. I don't expect to be able to do all these shots, but if anybody has any of these props for even one shot, let me know and i'll try to find some of them on my own. I've also never done anything on the scale that most of these shots would require, so I would like some help with lighting, setup, and well, just about everything.

1: I was wondering if any of the models had footsie pajamas. Think Christmas morning humor, like coal for christmas, etc. I'm also trying to source some empty boxes for oversized mock christmas presents. I'm thinking "refrigerator box" but I'm also looking for something less oblong. Lots of potential for toys/models/monsters popping out unexpectedly. I'm also looking for a bunch of wrapping paper and large bows, but I should be able to find most of that on my own.

2. Lopsided gifting shot. I've always loved this idea, there's nothing worse than giving somebody a lame pointless gift when they get you something really meaningful in return. Something in that vein would be nice.

2.a. Mommy gets a hunky fireman, repairman, milkman (insert cliche here) for christmas, daddy gets a tie.

3. Battles. Toys battle elves. Elves battle santa. Reindeer battle snowmen. Santa fights the mailman. Or Halloween battles christmas;)

4. Halloween gang vs christmas gang. Complete with gang golors (orange purple black vs red green white) These aren't the creatures themselves, just holiday enthusiast dressed in gang colors, or possibly people with picket signs protesting one another's chosen holiday.

5. Mall Santa shots gone bad. This one could go wrong on so many levels.

I have others... many others, but I should probably stop before it gets completely out of hand.

I do like idea #3. I shared an idea with @njl-photolog last month similar to it but I struggle with finding the time & resources and getting it in motion.

... Bloody & vicious looking zombie eating out the belly of a dead santa claus sprawled on his back. Location... riverbank @ vera katz with Hawthorne bridge in the background. I think it'd make a great 'PDX' image that'll get sick hits considering we have the zombie walk & santacon 2 months apart from each other.

I really thought there was going to be more photographer collaboration on each of the sets. I didn't mind buying my costume for the group to use, sharing my lighting gear, holding lights for people, and helping setup the sets. But I am very disappointed that I didn't get a turn to shoot my idea which would have take all but 10-15 minutes. Especially when I saw people starting a second and third location on their own and also others taking a second turn with a different model. Oh well, it was still fun to contribute and hangout with you all. Sorry I didn't stay to help cleanup, I was too out of the mood and bummed.
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
I hear you, seriously I do! I had a similar experience at the "Empty Condo" shoot, and this is why I put my camera away at that event. And, more importantly, why I volunteered to work as the lighting assistant at this photo shoot. I feel bummed to hear that I let you down, my job this evening was to help people setup concepts/ideas and help with the lighting -- I didn't take a single picture tonight just so I could focus my attention on this goal.

too many cooks in the studio
I didnt take any shots...except on film

for me I've done so many shoots lately that I didn't feel like being too aggressive to get my shot and at these meet ups I think its takes a fair amount of selfishness to get your shot(not necessarily a bad thing)

would have liked to have stayed for the light wrapping photos but have to be up early so can't stay out too late on a school night ;)
Jeff, hopefully you got something cool

I think I left my lights and garland...which probably ended up in funkytoasters big box-o-fun
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
Ironically, I would have said that limiting the number of photographer slots should have helped, but I'm surprised to discover that I'm wrong in thinking that. If these are the 60 green faceted mini LED lights, then somehow I ended up with them.....leave unmarked bills at an undisclosed location for their safe return. :o)

@njl-photolog: I want to make an extra special thanks for having you help out last night, it was great having you assist everyone, I really appreciated it.

@ShutterCraze said: "I am very disappointed that I didn't get a turn to shoot my idea which would have take all but 10-15 minutes"

You either need to speak up for yourself at these events or remind me, multiple times if needed, that you'd like to shoot. I'd rather fix the situation when there's a chance to fix it (ie. when you had all your gear setup last night)

Things always shift at these shoots and I try my best to keep things flowing...So honestly, i'm sorry that you didnt get a chance to shoot. I tried making this a smaller shoot, so everyone could have a little more time with the models and so forth...but it seems that people still got burned last night.

Lost and Found At the end of the night I found a bag with a bunch of AA batteries and a Radio Shack headphone to headphone cord. So just let me know if these are yours.

The shoots often devolve into free for all chaos without much collaboration in my limited experience. I don't know if it can or should be stopped, but that chaotic momentum will definately run people over, especially the newbs that the group is trying to get involved.

Was this discussed at all at the secret pizza meeting?

Perhaps there should be a super duper organized ultra collaboration no free agent meetup to see if it can work.
Sarah.Lynch 9 years ago
I gave it some (corporate sponsored) thought today. My own frustration at my first 3-4 shoots was pretty much what you're saying, so I just went and shot on my own. A few friends and coworkers at first and then Model Mayhem. That's where you can take your time and try new things and be wrong a lot.

Now I come to the meetups because you guys are geeky too and we can talk about geeky shit. And there are lots of models and I can skulk around and steal ideas. :) We get lots of faces to shoot and they get lots of takes on their faces But I'm also forced to be aware of how much time I'm taking and let's face it sometimes "fast paced" could be replaced with "real world".

For me (though I know it's not always about me) the pressure is good preparation for when I have to go out into the real world and look like I know what I'm doing in a short amount of time.

So for slow paced learning shoots - try just a few photogs instead of 20?

There - now my brain is empty and I can go process some shots.
Studio Gentry 9 years ago
First, a big thank you to those that helped me get a few shots in. Your assistance, opinions (and loaned equipment) were much appreciated. :-)

The Winter shoot was my second event with this group, but I've participated in other group shoots before. At every event, no matter how well organized, the chaos reigned in the end. The simple math of it is:

# of Bodies times Creative Vision minus Time dived by Space

Like njl-photolog though, I've discovered that with groups like this you can sometimes learn more being a "voice activated light stand" then a shooter. You may not get the shots, but you can get ideas/info that will pay off on future sets.

That's just my 2c and attempt to put a silver lining on this. :-)

Looking forward to the next get together.

There was only 9 photographers at this last shoot and it still got crazy. And as for the newspace, I think in the future the shoots will be a little different, due to limited space...So I was thinking of having movie nights, the barton slide shows and focused photoshoots where we collectively think up one solid idea and work on it throughout the night w/ only one person photographing.

And as sarah22333 mentioned, working with new models on your own is a good way to hone your craft. Also I highly recommend bringing along another photographer friend with you on the shoots, so you can help each other out. Two brains is always better than one.
So while one person shoots, the other person can assist and vice versa. And i'm more than positive that you could get someone here in this group to come along with you in a heartbeat, just post it and they will come help out...trust me.
seanmophoto 9 years ago
The one thing i did notice at the shoot was that many people were helping a few people set up shots, but they weren't necessarily offering their 'assistant's the opportunity to hop in and get a shot or two. this could be the lack of collaboration some were feeling. At the big meet ups i think its normal for everyone to get a crack at a setup, or at least thats been my experience. If someone has spent 10 minutes acting as a light stand for you, seems only polite to at least ask if they want a shot or two.
Studio Gentry Posted 9 years ago. Edited by Studio Gentry (member) 9 years ago
Newbe Question: Why do the pics of Kaytee in her bows keep disappearing? Do the Flickr Admins remove them? Or are they up just long enough for Kaytee to get a copy?

Since I am one of the photographers to shoot her in that "outfit" I want to make sure I'm cleared to post.
After my absolute failure of the "stripper for santas" shot, I fully expected other people to jump in and do it some justice. I was just as frustrated as everybody else watching me screw it up on that one. I was completely surprised when it was immediately dismantled and abandoned. Yeah, it took way too long, but that wasn't because I was taking lots of great shots that I didn't want to share. It's because the lighting sucked and I didn't want to walk away like that.

I for one want to apologize to everyone who helped with that shot. And everyone who had to sit there and watch me fuck it up. It was a whole lot of build up and not a whole lot of follow through. And I did not expect it to get torn down like that in the end. I am truly sorry, and if there is any way I can make it up to the group let me know.
