PDX Strobists visit The Fields of Fear

Date: Wednesday October 28th 2009
Time: 8:00pm
Admission: $8 (normally it's $12) <-- preferably cash, not credit card
Location: Washington County Fairgrounds
873 NE 34th Ave, Hillsboro OR 97124
(the MAX line goes directly to the Fairgrounds)

Info about the event:
We will be going through "The Fields of Fear" production and they are allowing us to bring cameras in if we want, but I'll warn you now, it's super dark, fast moving and you have to stay with the group. So if you want to shoot, you'll have to do it in the moment. It's basically like being in a zombie movie and trying to take pictures at the same time. And it last approx 25-30 minutes.

Then after the haunt we will be shooting our own undead model(s) away from the haunt. So you can enjoy the haunt with or without your camera and then get some shooting in afterwards.

Fields of Fear put on by Bag and Baggage Productions: www.bagnbaggage.org/shows-fields_of_fear.html

Oh yeah, field of fear, last year scared me badly and I fled in the middle of the shooting, but still tempted to do so this year !!

@datangpdx: The production this year is completely different than last year...Last year there was a traditional haunted house at the fairgrounds. And this year it is "The Fields of Fear", which is an interactive zombie experience....and the fair isnt done up with any cheezy haunted house tricks or props...which in my opinion gives it a more authentic feel. There's no carnival rides, no food vendors, nothing...nothing but an emergency treatment facility check-in and military personel.
Yeah baby.

@Kaytee Rose Hime: of course you can come just to be scared....

Any chance we can entice you to model afterwards? I've got Hallloween candy :)
dath1974 9 years ago
Oh, dazam, Kaytee may model for us, I guess I better clear the evening then and bring some candy;-> My biggest fear about this shoot is that I'll be sorting through zombie photos for another six months after the photo walk and now this;->

Why not. It should be fun.

Please count me in.

Though I don't plan on using a camera flash during the production itself, watching zombies covering their eyes howling in pain might not be appreciated....will knowing think of the poor zombies! :o)

Though I have a Halloween concept for a photo shoot afterward. ;-)
dependent circle [deleted] 9 years ago
Jeff, of course I'll model for you guys! Before, during, and after! And yes, candy is the perfect compensation :-D

@njl-photolog: what's your Halloween concept for afterwards?
Grrr ... I can't go that night!! DAMMIT!!!
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
@metakephoto: I was thinking, one zombie victim, zombie with fondue fork, some marshmallows (large lumpy ones) with fake blood -- I'm toying with fake blood being red food coloring with honey to get the consistency, but I'm open to suggestions? Working title "Even zombies enjoy refined dining"
njl-photolog PRO Posted 9 years ago. Edited by njl-photolog (member) 9 years ago
@metakephoto: My wife actually gave me a better suggestion for fake (edible) blood, Hershey's chocolate syrup with red food coloring. ;-)
They used to use Karo Syrup with red food coloring in the movies back in the day. Just as a suggestion.

@heyheyjk: Thanks for the tip John. I'll keep that in mind.

hey Niels... depending on the final photog/model ratio tomorrow night, may not be a good idea to spend too much time on one concept. Especially on a school night with less-than-the-usual shooting hours we'll have. :\ Also since we may work outdoors (depending how rainy & chilly it'll be) it may even change the plan/location. Good idea though. Would love to hookup & do this with you on a non-meetup night if u want. (I know a great spot/backdrop for it!) We'll chat manana :P
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
@pipography: Good point, we can play it by ear depending on time/weather/models. If it doesn't happen tomorrow night, not a problem. As for working on this on a different night, absolutely! :D
njl-photolog PRO 9 years ago
@heyheyjk: Found info online that talks about using Karo syrup as a cleaning agent (for removing grass stains from fabric) so it looks like a better choice than choc syrup, esp. with clean-up afterward.

Just keep it real. Let's just slice-up Kaytee.
Kevin Hakala 9 years ago
Hey Jeff, I'm going to join for the scare and be an observer on the shoot to see what I might learn and what I'm getting myself into. Thanks, Kevin
Tom.Lechner PRO 9 years ago
I used the Fred Meyer variant of Karo syrup and red food coloring, but I'm told a splash of blue food coloring makes it darker, which would have been better.. Haven't used chocolate syrup, but that would sure make it darker, and tastier too!

On that note, my sources tell me that pantyhose stuffed with jello, and coated with something slimy makes great intestines!
admin
ʎɥdɐɹbodıd 9 years ago
I shop at the Asian markets on SE 82nd every weekend
and have access to pig & cow intestines any time :)

... if it really ills anyone out, i could cook 'em before
bringing them to the shoot. Just need to bloody 'em up. :)

i've been sick all day...so hopefully i'll be able to make it out tomorrow night

Jeff, make yourself better!!

Pip, I think more people would vote on slicing YOU up!
admin
ʎɥdɐɹbodıd 9 years ago
that's fine. be sure to start by slicing off my manboobs! :)
okay, going off topic here.... but yes... Jeff, get better!

Is there a backup plan or special instructions if you're unable to make it? I'm assuming we'll all still proceed. But is there anyone specific to ask for at the gate for the special pricing, staff to escort the group, etc.

i'm thinking we could always just go get a drink nearby after the haunt and see how things go from there.....and i just got an e-mail from the director of the haunt asking if at all possible that everyone pays cash $$..so they dont have to pay credit card machine fee's on each person......
pdxblazer503 9 years ago
I got the flu shots after lunch, Ok, I am ready to shoot anything comes into my view
GeoFX Posted 9 years ago. Edited by GeoFX (member) 9 years ago
Chris, your flu shots is not going to stop zombie infectors. Maybe a lot of flash on 1/1 power. A lot of them!!

i still don't think i'm gonna be able to make it tonight :(
but if someone wants to bring some white face paint, black for around the eyes, fake blood and possibly some scary zombie teeth..that would be great....i know you can get it super easy at walkgreens or any costume shop. and it looks like we only have one model for the night...the fabulous kaytee rose hime...so hopefully she doesnt mind all the attention...
GeoFX 9 years ago
Where are we going to meet? Is it by the ticket purchase while wait in the line? Is flash allowed during the session?
admin
metakephoto PRO 9 years ago
Everyone can meet out in the parking lot..it shouldnt be busy on a Wednesday night...so don't go buy tickets until everyone is there..cause they know were coming and have a discounted rate for us....and as for shooting inside the production i'm pretty sure you can, but there's really not that much to shoot, unless your super fast and good at shooting in the pitch dark...
Daynatron 9 years ago
We're here in the parking lot: Pip, Kaytee and I--white SUV ... just in case you're out there checking the page thinking "where the heck is everyone?" too ;)
Gonna have to bow out on this one guys. Sorry so late, but lessons went longer than I expected today.
dath1974 9 years ago
Sorry for the late notice, I'm out as well, have a cold and decided it'd be better not to share with everyone. Have a most excellent time!

Thanks to Jeff and Luke for organizing this visit to the "Fields of Fear" production. Sorry, that Jeff was sick and couldn't join us.

Unfortunately, the light rain made photography a little fraught as we were all trying to keep our cameras dry, but that was the Oregon weather's fault.

My thanks to everyone who tried to help me diagnose why my Speedlite's AF-assist beam wasn't working, especially to GeoFX who worked with me to troubleshooting with his camera and Speedlite.

FOOTNOTE
For all Canonite's, I resolved this problem with the AF-assist beam, though sadly hours after this event was over when I got home. If your camera is in "AI Servo" AF mode the Speedlite's AF-assist beam will *not* come on! Period! -- regardless of the Custom Fn settings in your camera or Speedlite.

You have to be in "One Shot" or "AI Focus" AF mode for the AF-assist beam to available. Oh! And I looked through all the manuals I have here (1D Mk III, 20D, 580EX, 420EX) and not one of them mentions this point. The 20D manual does a one line footnote that mentions if the Mode Dial is set to "Landscape", "Sports" or "Flash Off" then the AF-assist beam is disabled, but nothing else. From this you are meant to fully grok all functional permutations!
GeoFX 9 years ago
Niels, glad you got that resolved. A lesson learned for me as well!!
