UPDATE: This will be a hard light shoot, so please no umbrellas, soft boxes or light stands.

UPDATE (pt.II): We will be meeting at 2:30pm and we'll head out from there at 3:00pm sharp

PDX Strobist Photo Walk
Date: Saturday Oct 24th 2009
Time: Meetup 2:30pm and we'll head out from there at 3:00pm sharp
Location Start: McMenamins Market Street Pub (1526 S.W. 10th)

Photowalking - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photowalking
During the photo walk we will be moving from location to location. So come prepared with comfortable shoes and bring lighting gear that is quick and portable. Also there will be plenty of models/subjects to shoot placed strategically throughout the city...so don't worry, this won't be your typical photo walk.

This will be a "rain or shine" event

I'd love to, but already have long standing plans for a different "walk" that day.
Is there any idea what time this will wrap up? I only need to know to coordinate a baby-sitter. I'll go as long as it takes! Thanks, Jeff!

David M Potter 9 years ago
Do we need light stands, umbrellas?
admin
metakephoto PRO 9 years ago
Bring what you want, but remember this is a photo walk. Personally i'm not bringing light stands or umbrellas, and i'm packing as light as possible. And hopefully fellow photogs will be kind enough to be human light stands for a shot or two.
jack satta (fnb) 9 years ago
Another tentative (soccer season).

Would it be prudent to bring one's own trigger (PocketWizard or other)?
admin
metakephoto PRO Posted 9 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 9 years ago
yes...bring whatever you want to use to trigger your flashes and we'll be assigning PW/Channel #'s at the beginning of the walk.

OK well after spending an hour going around in circles I finally decided on my Photo Walk Strobist kit. I managed to fit everything in one small photo shoulder bag and one tripod shoulder bag, easy to shoulder and run with. I decided not to bring a light stand and instead packed a second Speedlight. I'm hoping the others in my group are willing to be human light stands and in return they are welcome to use my gear.

tripod bag: 2 medium umbrellas, 2 umbrella adaptors, 3 pocketwizards, 2 Canon 580 EXII speedlights.

photobag: camera, gels, batteries, memory cards, grid, gobo.
Alleh Lindquist 9 years ago
Hmm meeting only 2 blocks from my condo maybe I will stop by.
admin
metakephoto PRO 9 years ago
@shuttercraze: why umbrella adaptors? if you plan on using human light stands...just have them hold the flash and point it into the umbrella.
now your pack is even lighter :)
I may have built the worlds first stroller/softbox for this one...and it is bitchin.

Ok, ok so it looks like crap, but the light is good.
admin
ʎɥdɐɹbodıd 9 years ago

bitchin' like the Strobist Jet Pack? :P
Sort of. Let's just say that i will be putting the crazy cart-rolling street ladies to shame.

So... I am still not clear about the concept of photo walk, especially with flash, and umbrella setting, you mean we walk and shoot, walk and shoot? and grab whoever gets into the camera as model ?

@datangpdx: did you read the wikipedia page (link at the top of this thread)?

ShutterCraze (NUEL) Posted 9 years ago. Edited by ShutterCraze (NUEL) (admin) 9 years ago
@metakephoto- adapters are mostly because of my trust issues hehe. I once had a helper doing the one hand umbrella - one hand speedlight scenario and I caught him not paying attention to where he was pointing into the umbrella. i.e. umbrella pointing down to model and speedlight in the umbrella pointing up to the sky. Its mostly for consistency.

Geez, I think I'm going back to my first kit and just going with one or two Speedlights with Stofens triggered by Pocketwizards. In that case I can get everything into one shoulder pack.

@datangpdx: when you go to the link at the top of this thread there is a referenced link that led me to a scott kelby photowalk flickr group. I checked it out just to get ideas of the endless opportunities that await us.

UPDATE: This will be a hard/bare light shoot, so please no umbrellas, soft boxes or light stands.
talonblade 9 years ago
is there room for a newbie to strobists or would another meetup be better.
admin
metakephoto PRO 9 years ago
@talonblade: there's definitly room at this shoot...so come on down...and at least you can observe and learn
What!? No umbrellas or soft boxes? Why?

Does that mean that the stroller/softbox is out? It is extremely mobile if that is the concern.

I feel so deflated...
Sarah.Lynch 9 years ago
Yes! Ruining Jesse's day just totally made mine. Thanks!
admin
ShutterCraze (NUEL) 9 years ago
Will someone please pump up funkytoasters tires!

I like the new terms of only bare/hard light. Keeps us extremely quick and makes for different lighting than we normally work with, out of the norm to make us creative.
admin

One main reason for making the "No light stands, No umbrellas rule" is because I just didnt want 101 stands and umbrellas downtown...the less attention we bring to ourself the better....
GeoFX 9 years ago
Jeff, can we have police officers redirect the traffic for us as we terror the whole city blocks? Haha!!
Well, I'm still using my StoFen and/or Speed Grid and/or snoot if that's okay. See you there!

Hello MeTakePhoto

Any objection to a light on a pole? No mods, eek no snoot, grid...?

that is hard light..
kirk jones 9 years ago
I'm going to have to miss due to a family emergency. thanks
admin
ShutterCraze (NUEL) 9 years ago
@Terence Dodge- One goal for minimal equipment as Metakephoto points out is to be incognito. I think if we all had a pole/stand/tripod/monopod, that may bring unwanted attention to you. Is your pole to get your light higher? I can hand hold a light to 8 feet so I think we all will be human poles/stands during the walk. But maybe you have a special reason for your pole.
As far as mods, I will have stofens in my bag. Most flash accessories I've seen are small and non-intrusive that attach to the flash. On the other hand I've seen some DIY mods were our flashes mount into something big. We should let our judgement define whether something is an attention grabber or not. All this is just my 2cents, Metakephoto will set us straight.
admin
metakephoto PRO Posted 9 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 9 years ago
I could get on Shuttercraze's shoulders and we could get the light up to 12ft or you could always toss your flash in the air and hope it's pointed at your subject :)

and as for mods..snoots, grids gels, etc....those are all ok to bring.

ShutterCraze (NUEL) 9 years ago
uh...guess I should pack my back brace and some Motrin then.

Quick question: how long do these walks usually last? Is it a "shoot 'til we drop" event or is there a general time frame?
Hardlinejoe 9 years ago
Well, my moving date got moved back a few days, so I think I'll be able to make it (though I really should finish packing).

@ metakephoto: That sounds cool. However, this morning I awoke with a wicked case of either jetlag or food poisoning. The dark side of vacation. I'll have to bow out... this time.
New to the group and would love to be included. Be happy to observe and learn/help if there is room.
Ooh! I can bring my Rayflash! I almost forgot about it. It fits a Canon 580EX II if anyone else wants to try it out and we might be able to rig it for other flashes - I know it fits my 430 EX II if I have a Lumiquest velcro strap on it but not if my Honl speed strap is on. See everyone tonight!

Stopped by ProPhoto last night to see if they rent RayFlash for today's shoot. Unfortunately not. Was tempting :P Would love to try yours today, John.
noisy rabbits [deleted] 9 years ago
12 feet!! whoo hoo, with a back brace..Yes that will work, now how to blend/camo that as to not attract attention..hmm halloween utility pole as a costume, who would guess, flash might be a give away + the other 35 shooters laughing and clapping.

Terence
who will leave his pole at home, this time.

I'm in the same boat as David M Potter... maybe in a few years I can drag my kid with me to be my assistant.
Sorry guys, I ended up bailing early. At some point when we were on 10th, one of my flashes disappeared, along with a hot shoe adapter, an umbrella mount and a cybersync csrb receiver.

I don't know whether it was stolen or misplaced, but considering the nature of this outing, either seems possible. Stupid sexy zombies...
dath1974 9 years ago
Funky, I kept wondering where you got to, sorry to hear about the gear, that's a major bummer! Your stroller panel was sweet!

Thanks to the organizer(s) this go around, it was a great event! I probably shouldn't have been jogging on my recovering knee with a 25lb backpack, oh well, all in the spirit of getting some shots;->
I was wondering what happened to your cart, funkytoaster and didn't even get to introduce myself. Pretty crazy crowd and I left after the zombies vacated the waterfront. No great shots but some okay ones and will post tomorrow. Can't wait to see everyone else's photos!
Hardlinejoe 9 years ago
I split early as well, have a lot to finish up this week before moving. I mainly followed the crowd and shot as we moved, like Heyheyjk, didn't get any real great shots, but had fun.
