I'd like to open the June shoot up to the group for ideas.
Here's some suggested things to include:

Location

Theme

Models/Subject

Group Size

Length of Shoot

Shoot with your own equipment within your group?

Share equipment within your group during the shoot?

I will have to put some thought into ideas but I would love to be in the June shoot :)

Thanks.

Ryan... what's with the cough?

I'll brainstorm some ideas but to get things started.

Location: Anywhere. Obviously a theme might answer this.
Theme: Cool idea but it may take some time to setup.
Models/Subject: Still brainstorming this one.
Group size: 3-5 photographers.
Length: For me I can shoot all day.
Equipment: I would rather use my own gear. I enjoy seeing what others do with theirs though.

Location: the Columbia River.

Theme: Shooting a wakeboarder in action (from the boat).

Models/Subject : Shuttercraze, the boat captain, anyone open to sport model for us.

Group Size: the boat captain, Shuttercraze, and three pdxstrobists.

Length of Shoot: 2 hours. I'm sure I can do this a couple times in the summer.

Shoot with your own equipment within your group?- Shoot with your own camera.

Share equipment within your group during the shoot? -Strobists must share one lighting kit and the triggering. I can't afford to bring three or four different lighting kits aboard. We must plan ahead to build the lighting kit we all agree to use.

Just throwing an idea out there, Shuttercraze.

ShutterCraze... I'd be up for that!
Location: What about a shoot on the beach? Ecola state park or somewhere not too crowded (ie not Seaside).

Theme: I was thinking rather than the cliched and overdone swimsuit thing what about some bright and fun summer dresses. With the tall beach grass and sand dunes I think we could get some great shots.

Group size: 8-10 photogs.

Length of shoot: It would have to go pretty late if we want to get some rad sunset shots. But we could all go out of Lunch/ Dinner before or afterwards.

Carpooling would be a must and it would have to be a pretty long shoot but I think totally worth it for some great photos.
Ok, I want in, whatever it is, I want in.

And I suppose I would be willing to share my gear;)

The Beach sounds great! i would love to do that.
Looking over my schedule, the first half of the month works better for me. Any time before the 16th would be spectacular.

I have some opening weekends in June and would love to attend. so long as I know ahead of time where and when. The beach idea sounds fun, there are some beaches along Columbia and Williamette?
Love the beach idea and would be in for the 7th, 20th or 27th.

As far as sharing goes I'm always up for sharing extra flashes, pw, and/or modifiers. Cameras and lenses not so much.

Another vote for the beach here. I can haul three others plus whatever gear fits in the back of the truck.

If we do a beach trip, it would be nice if we allowed it to be an unlimited group. There is no reason that we can't have 50 people show up for the shoot.

+1 for Beach, Yeah.
A large group might spread the models a bit thin...
I also like shuttercraze's idea.

@ShutterCraze- That sounds like a great idea. It would also be nice to use that paint pole idea that was on the Strobist.com site a week or so ago.

Maybe another road trip in the future could be Fort Stevens. Those old batteries and bunkers could be a lot of fun for a shoot.

If we end up doing a wakeboarder shoot. I might suggest Lackamas Lake. 72 degrees right now, Lots of shade, Calm water for excellent carving. And, the only lake thats pretty close to Portland. Oh, and its not the Columbia!

I support the idea of Karate, Taekwondo, or swim suit in Canon Beach.

I really like You Look Nice Today's suggestion for the beach and sun dresses etc. I'd love to be a part of that shoot if it happens - although I'm really intimidated by the whole off camera lighting - I've only used my 285HV off camera once (ahh!) - but I'd love to glean some of this groups expertise in that area! Sunday the 14th would be perfect for me!

Don't let your intimidation stop you from coming. The groups are usually very friendly with help.

no problem OregonVelo, i'm thinking the weekend of the 13th/14th would work best.

I would be out the 13th but up for the 14th
Jeff, I agree.

I'm gone after the 17th (but will be back early July!) . I support the beach idea. It'd be cool if there could be models dressed in 'Lawrence of Arabia' garb or obnoxiously big dresses---lots of material to billow and flap around in the wind.

Beach would be a BLAST! I'm game if it falls on the 14th :)~

ok..it looks like everyone's ready to hit the beach this summer..so could we get the location narrowed down on which beach? Anyone have a beach house?
We have one in Seaside right off of the promenade.

I still prefer the wakeboarding idea, especially if it's at he Gorge, and if we could include some kiteboarders. If people want to do a beach, i think the best place is the Dunes!

June 13 and 14 are terrible for me, but whatever works for the most people is the right thing to do.

Shame there are no "poll" features or anything like that for a quick, easy way to see what dates or ideas are the most popular.

Has there ever been a discussion of a members only PDX Strobist Yahoo Group for discussions and planning purposes.. that way they would go to everyone's email and folks would not have remember to come to the site to stay current.. the info would go to them.

I'd like to meetup with this group. I travel and I never know where I'll be three to four weeks into the future. This makes it very differcult to plan meetups for me. If you folks can put up with a person that may at the last minute be out of town I'd like to join and share the wisdom. Having said that I think any park along the Columbia River for instance Women's Forum State Park would be a great place.

@aether.drinker: so how are you planning on lighting a wakeboarder or especially a kiteboarder?
@Shuttercraze: same question as above...
@PhotoSportNW: I don't think it's necessary to start a sub group over at Yahoo Groups for PDX Strobist just to have discussions and planning purposes..I like the fact that nobody knows when the next shoot is going to be and that they have to check the site periodically if they want to attend a shoot.

Do we have a verdict yet ?

@metakephoto: Well obviously you would throw your flash and PW at them, and take the shot before it hit the water. Conversely you could dangle the flashes from balloons, and wait till they pass by. :)

Actually I've done something similar before, it would just involve a second boat. So it only works if we have more than one boat available. Mainly I just wanted an excuse to go wakeboarding.

I still say the northern most dunes. There's a beach, it's the closest to Portland, and the dunes would be good for desert-like scenes.

Like Sandlake, that is only about an hour and half drive.

There's been some talk recently of an Oregon Parkour trip to the beach. I imagine some of them would be interested in a combo photo shoot. Fort Stevens would be good for that, but they can jump and roll around anywhere.

At the moment, I'm free any weekend but this weekend.

Being a native Oregonian, I kind of wonder if we might have better luck with the weather at the beach in July or August or even September? The beach shoot sounds like a blast but there may be some value it pushing it back another month. It would really suck if we got a big shoot like this planned at the weather didn't cooperate.

The Parkour idea sounds fantastic. Those guys are great to shoot.

ANOTHER IDEA: FLOWERS AT NIGHT!
Doug Sherman and I had a blast shooting flowers at night out at the Iris farm in Keizer. I know we like to shoot models, but just for the variety of it, we did some cool stuff with lighting up flowers. Either the Iris farm or Oregon Garden might be willing to let us in. We could go from 8-10 PM. We could probably work out some interesting things with models as well.

If this doesn't work as a meetup I would be willing to sponsor a smaller group to head down there on a week night. There are a LOT less people there. Send me a personal message if you would like to do something. See my stream for a couple of examples of shots.

Just for the record I'm working on a PDX Strobist Meet for July (or possibly August). Assuming it works out I will start a thread on the subject as soon as I have things a bit more nailed down.

Also, related to a post in the above thread, if there were a wakeboard meet I might be able to get another wakeboard boat with a couple of pretty amazing wakeboarders (pictured below) with enough advance notice.

Location: Canemah Park, Oregon City.
This place is rarely occupied, and offers a very large and varied landscape.

Theme: Summer fashion or native.

Models/Subject: I have some attractive lady friends I could bring along. BYOM.

Group Size: If people could carpool, I'd say we could get 10-15 out there.

Length of Shoot: Two hours.

Shoot with your own equipment within your group? I don't have any strobist gear, so...

Share equipment within your group during the shoot? Please!!@
