I would like to come, this is my first venture into this kind of shoot. GeoFX was telling me about the group and this venue. It sounds like both a lot of fun, and a great learning adventure.

Metakephoto,
Thanks so much that gives a idea of how cute this little town is. I never even knew it was there! I may be in way over my head on this, but it will be an experience.

@BrandyVSOP: don't worry about being in over your head..it's the best way to experience things..and you'll always have the opportunity to take a step back and just observe what other photographers are doing at these events..which in my opinion is probably the best way to learn...

Yeah, that was really fun. I learned A LOT! If anyone took photos of the horse, Sandy was asking if we could send pictures to her. She said that they hang 8X10 photos that people take of her horses up in (I think) Alpenrose. Please send photos to:

I had a great time during the Aplenrose Shoot yesterday, but later after it was over I got some feedback from some of the models and they said there was a big difference in experience levels between the various groups which made it frustrating at times. Now of course there is supposed to be that difference between the shooters, as sharing and learning is the point of these things, but not between the groups.

It is within the communication between shooters within each group that much of the learning takes place. My mistake is that I got grouped with two other long-time members and got so caught up in doing my own thing I didn’t think to interact with the newer members hardly at all. That was a mistake, after all, I can go shoot on my own anytime.

I propose that during shoots where we divide into groups, we make sure each group has a roughly even mix of experience levels. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for “over-organizing” these things too much or preventing them from becoming more free-form as time goes on, I’m only saying that the experienced need to be sharing and interacting with the inexperienced a bit more. I will definitely make a point of being aware of the other photographers, especially the new faces I haven’t gotten to know yet, next time.

Also, I want to thank Jeff (metakephoto) for going through the trouble of setting so many of these things up. I really appreciate all of it.

PS - Yes Mr. Luke Cook, feel free to sign up for any of our meets.

In regards to Ken's statement. It may be a good idea to appoint a team leader per group to help facilitate discourse and a team atmosphere.

He Kenji (ninjaphoto),

How come you never actually show up to any of these? You'd probably have fun and there is a lot the PDXStrobist members could learn from you.

I didnt really clarify the shoot to well for the newbies this time around...but in future shoots you are supposed to stay with your group for the entire shoot (which i thought was clear, when i assigned everyone into 4 groups)...and i'm fine if people want to walk around and see what other groups are doing, but you should not be taking pictures of the other groups or their models during this time.

And at future shoots there will be assigned photographers that can go around and shoot setup shots of all the groups and document the day..but only these people.
[ninjaphoto] 10 years ago
Ken, alas, I am focused on my current project at this time. I don't know where it's going, but I know it's going forward. However, I do have some wisdom to pass on to the gang.

"- technique is a language: the better your technical skills, the more refined you can make images
- language is nothing without message: technique is only valuable in function of an image: search for content, then translate into technical choices
- to find content: look into your heart, into your feelings, fears, hopes and wishes.
- be always respectful to whom you work with
- keep smiling! "
