IMPORTANT UPDATE -

Because they are having a grand opening celebration of the Bridge to Sauvie Island at noon (including a parade) we have to move the meeting up to 10am at the final location instead of meeting at the store. See below for details on how to get to the beach!

PDX Strobist Meetup/Photoshoot
Date: Sunday, June 22nd 2008
UPDATED INFO: Meeting Time for Photographers and Models: 10:00AM
UPDATED INFO: Location: Collins Beach; Gate #5 (photographers and models please meet on the beach and still make sure to pick up a parking permit for $3.50 on the way)

Directions are posted at the bottom of this post

If you went to the last meet-up, you must submit your photos through the www.pdxstrobist.org/ website by Wednesday, June 18th!. If you need help contact me, but we are going to have to get tough on this because too many people are not giving the models pictures and we want models to speak well of our group and keep coming to meet-ups.

Hey Everyone!

All the current admins have been talking and we decided that we want to share the love in the planning and organizing of events. Please let us know if you would like to help out in the future. This month, I get to be the lucky one to plan things.

We also discussed things we liked about events, and things that we thought could be done to improve our meet-ups. One common theme was that we like to encourage more collaboration between photographers and provide more educational opportunities. With that in mind we are going to try something different for this month's meet-up. If people like it, we will continue it, otherwise we can try something else...

First, PLEASE READ THIS POST ENTIRELY before RSVP'ing for the meet-up. We want everyone to understand how things are going to be organized before they get on-site.

June 2008 Meet-Up
What to Expect: We are going to have fun on the beach of Sauvie Island! Rain or Shine we are going to the beach. All photographers and models are going to meet on Collins Beach (Gate#5) @ 10am

At that point I am going to go over what we decided might work best and the rules of the shoot (gulp!). Then the admins are going to break people into even groups, hopefully, around 5 per group.

During this shoot each group will work together with the model to produce their own shots and setups. Only one camera will be in use in each group at a time The goal is that everyone in the group will get a chance to shoot the model without crowding, and with the models full attention. This is the most fair to the model and photographer, and it gives people that are new a chance to shoot without the stress of having so many others around. It also gives those without gear a chance to learn and participate. Help the others in your group!

Models will rotate one direction between groups, and photographers will rotate locations the other direction. This should get people a new location, and model/photographer each rotation. Right now we are planning on 30 minute rotations.

UPDATE ON TIME AND LOCATION (PLEASE READ)

Meet-up FAQ
Q - Wait? I don't understand... How do I help the others in my group?
A - It's simple! If they are new and having a hard time, ask them if they would like help. If they are a pro, ask them if they want you to help move a light, or be a voice activated light stand.

Q - Do I have to work with others, or have others helping me?
A - Yes! This meet-up is about helping people learn. If you know you can do this in your sleep, then setup your shots, and tell the others in your group what you are doing. Tell them why you put a light there, what effect you are going for by doing that... Show them your monitor and show how changing things changes the shot. You might even get some feedback or ideas that help you get even better.

Q - I get what you are saying about helping people learn, but I am not very social and I just want to practice. What should I do?
A - Come have fun! Practice, but work with those in your group. This isn't about getting the shot, it's about getting better by seeing other's perspectives and ideas. Each of us has something we can learn from another.

Q - I don't like all this structure/you sound bossy. Can I just show up and watch?
A - Absolutely! Just don't interfere with others.

Q - What happens if I have a problem with someone in my group, or I don't like this group thing?
A - Find an admin, talk to them, we will try and make it work. Admins will have something (undecided) to help you find them during the shoot.

Q - I don't want to shoot the models / I brought my own model, do I still have to work in a group?
A - No, if you don't want to work with the models and you want to shoot something else that is fine, but you might want to see if you can make a group for your idea anyway. The group is not just about sharing time with the models but also in helping to prevent problems to others and a great way to learn.

Q - This sounds like total crap and I don't like it. / You ruined PDX Strobist.
A - I am sure the meet-up you organize will be cooler. Seriously, we do this for free as volunteers and we want to make everyone happy. We are open to all suggestions, and are going to keep trying different ideas until we find something that really works well for everyone.

Q- If I am working with 5 others how am I going to get enough time with the model?
A- Each person should work until they get a couple of good shots with the model and then let the next person try. If someone is taking a long time, ask them how you can help them to get the shot quicker. Collaborate, and figure out how to do things quicker or just all do the same setup.

Q- I didn't go to the last meet-up (or any meetups), so do I have to have photos submitted to attend this one?
A- No, you only need to submit images for shoots you attend. If you attend a shoot and then don't submit your images to the models (through the pdxstrobist.org site) then you are not allowed to another meet-up until you do. Think of it like doing your home-work as part of getting to participate!

Directions to Collins Beach (Gate#5):
Take Highway 30 north from Portland, or south from St. Helens. North of the town of Linnton, watch for a sign, "Sauvie Island Bridge" at a traffic-light-controlled intersection. Turn onto the bridge. Then go to the general store at the base of the bridge as you cross the river channel and purchase a daily pass for $3.50. Be sure to place this on your dash when you park at the beach.

Then take Sauvie Island Road north from the store (turn left out of the store parking lot), and turn right onto Reeder Road a few miles up. Continue on Reeder Road after it intersects with Gillihan Road. Follow Reeder Road, which will become a bit narrower and rougher as it crosses into Columbia County. Stay on Reeder Road, passing Reeder Beach, a small RV park and marina, and a few farms. Stay on Reeder until the road turns to gravel (the beach parking lot along the paved portion is a clothed beach, known as Walton Beach). Once you reach the gravel portion, you will see a sign: Entering Clothing-Optional Area. Parking is along the left-hand side of the road; foot trails to the beach are on the right, marked 1 through 6.

And we will be meeting on the beach of Gate 5 @ 10:00am (Rain or Shine)
Everything sounds great to me! Sounds like great organization!! Sign me up!

Sounds good to me :)

Also, I'd like to encourage carpooling. I'll be driving from the Hawthorne district and if anyone wants to hitch a ride and save some gas, just say so, if we have 40 people there, there's no reason to have 40 cars. Also, if we all split the cost of fuel, everyone all-round saves money.

The rules sound great. While I enjoyed the last one, it wasn't as social as I expected (maybe it was just me?). Of course, I don't know anyone since I'm new to the group.

Here are a few (possibly unwelcomed or already considered) ideas: Maybe the organizers of the meet-up can have a sign-up/check-in spot where everyone signs in and gets a name tag??? This would be helpful to those new to the group (maybe I'm the only one!) Camera preference (Canon (the best!)/Nikon/Other) could be indicated on the sign-in sheet as a way of dividing us into groups.

In any case, count me in!

Mike-
We actually had nametags, they just didn't get distributed. Sorry about that one. Will have for sure at this one. Your right, this last one wasn't as social as they have been in the past. Everybody was pretty much doing their own thing as we weren't assigned groups. Much of that was because of the police showing up and the jostling of venues. Once again, this one will be different, and more like previous meetups where we were assigned groups and rotated with our groups. Hopefully this one will work better for you, and thank you for your input.

@mike - Like Coupeowner said we will have check-in and nametags again this time, also there will be a social area for people to hang out and chat if they want to take a break from their group. I haven't gotten to the details of things yet, but I am hoping we can setup a potluck picnic thing in this area as well. The potluck thing worked great for the meet at my place.

@tom - If you can take the MAX to "Beaverton Central" you can get a ride with me, but I am going to be leaving a bit earlier to get things setup.

Does anyone in the group have something that would help block out direct sunlight from hitting the model during the shoot? Or do you think it's overkill to use something like that?
Whoowl 10 years ago
I will have several large beach umbrellas, and a couple reflective car shades. It would be cool if we had a tent or something for the models to change inside if they wanted.
This will be me first one and I haven't been very active in this group but count me in as well. I'm fairly new to off the camera flash photography but am looking forward to finally being able to go to one of these.

Changing "room": I have a pretty big (2 rooms) tent I can bring.

Shade: We could create some scrims to diffuse the sun with some ripstop/silk and PVC. Aside from that, on a smaller scale, those 5 in 1 reflector kits include a scrim. Mine is the 43" set from Impact and it works pretty well on one or two people.

@mikeharris_27:yeah thats what i was thinking too, i'm gonna bring my reflector and possible use it to block light if necessary.

and "yes" bring your tent, that would be great to have for the models.

one thing that i would really like to focus on, is actually setting up shots. i will bring a few tear sheets from magazines, and a couple of books i have, and do some reverse engineering on them. i believe that it will help with the models to get an idea of what exactly the photographer is looking for.

Ps. does anyone have any photos of the location we are going to? so we can do a little planning?

i live in NE Portland, so if anyone is in my area, i really would love to get a ride with someone.

The reason for moving the time up and releaseing the final location is because there's going to be the grand opening of the new Sauvie Island Bridge from 11-4pm (and probably lots of traffic). Read the following from www.sauvieisland.org to undersatnd why we moved the time up :)

"The public is invited to attend a celebration to mark the grand opening of the new Sauvie Island Bridge on Sunday, June 22, 2008. The family-oriented event will be held on the new bridge from 11 am to 4 pm.

The grand opening will include a bridge dedication at noon. The dedication will be followed at 12:45 pm by a parade of first crossings across the new bridge, including a group of Sauvie Island residents who lived on the island before the first bridge opened in 1950. More than a dozen booths will offer information and sell products from Sauvie Island. Food and beverages will be sold onsite. Entertainment will include the classic honky tonk sounds of The Buckles and Lisa and Her Kin, and balloon artist Joe Mishkin. A free shuttle service will operate throughout the day to transport visitors since parking is extremely limited near the bridge."

Well... thanks for everything and the chance to jump into the water. Never had better excuse than this. ^_^

Were you hand holding the flash and pocket wizard or was it on a light stand?
If it was on a light stand and it still fell in the water, you should of bought one of these :)

@AJ... took PW apart and dry the circuity board... power up and it blows up... I am just kidding. It works fine now.

@Metakephoto... When wind blows, it knock off the light stand before I put down some sandbags. PW was hanging on the light stand. The umbrella did stop the whole light stand from submerge under the water. PW dip under the water a little. I need the caddy like yours or getting zip lock bag to protect it.
