Auzigog 6:54pm, 24 April 2008
(I'm throwing this post together since I need to run to class, but I'll update it later today)

This is going to be our first contest. The theme will be self portraits. Normally contests will begin at the beginning of the month, but since a few people already took self portrait shots, we'll accept photos taken in April or May.

Contest rules:
1) Photos must be taken AFTER the time the contest begins.
2) Must submit setup shot(s) as well
3) No photos from meetups can be submitted to the contest
4) You may only submit one image per contest. You can change what image this is up until the day voting begins.

Submissions:
Simply post the photo to this thread using the HTML snippet on the "all sizes" button (directions here). Setup shots are also required. If you don't have a setup shot, then please upload a diagram/drawing that explains your setup.

Voting:
Vote one 1 photo by stating the persons screen name. Voting closes on June 7th at 11:59 PM.

Any thoughts on this?

I plan on writing an application (using the flickr API) to handle future contests. Hopefully this will be done by the time the June contest rolls around.

Have fun!

(I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff...)

So... Is anyone actually planning on participating in this?

YES!! Sorry for the lack of response. I like the whole idea and hope we get some good participation.

I'm already using this shot for another contest, thus, why not?

April 27, 2008

Lighting was an overhead lamp in my apartment. I hope that's ok.
(Used Michelle Black's "BW Essence" and "Funky" actions in photoshop for processing. As per the other contest.)

I changed the rules about setup shots a bit. It's also fine to upload a diagram/drawing showing your setup and lighting.

@[ninjaphoto]: If you could upload some sort of setup drawing, that would be awesome. Even though your setup was simple, I'd like setup shots to be mandatory. Thanks!
[ninjaphoto] 10 years ago
Set up. Ummm. Lamp in my apartment, 75 watt bulb, about 6 inches above, about 18 inches to my left. I basically gauge my composition by viewing my reflection in the lens. I'd take a picture but then you'd see how messy my apartment is.

So how are the "self portraits" coming along with everyone? I attempted mine last night, with the help of PhotoInference as a human light stand, voice activated remote trigger for my flash.
Auzigog 10 years ago
I haven't had a single moment to think about mine. I got really excited about the idea of writing software to handle a contest that most of my free time has gone towards that. It probably won't be done for a month or so, but it should be fantastic when it is done.

Hopefully I'll have time to do a self portrait sometime in the next couple weeks.

Sadly, I still have yet to enter the contest that I organized. Not sure if I'll get around to it by the deadline.

Speaking of deadlines. I suppose we should solidify when that time is. I think 11:59PM of Saturday May 24th. That gives us a full week of voting before the month is over.

EDIT: Deadline changed until the very last second of the month of May (for all you procrastinators). ;)

OregonVelo 10 years ago
Oh, I would say the last day of May, then voting is the first week of June. I am horrible with deadlines and if I am thinking of a May contest, I am thinking that the deadline is the last day in May.

I would agree with OregonVelo. You can always start the next one on June 1st too.

i'm at school right now, i might be able to shoot something real quick.

Time is TICKING!!

PS I have taken some shots but I have trouble finding any I would use when I'm the subject. ............

Maybe I'll give it another go tomorrow or just pic one and post it, either way

Our time is running out....

I'll post mine at the end of May... 2009. :)
Ben Lundberg 10 years ago
hey guys... so i think i'm too late to try doing a self portrait but for some ideas on how to do this... click on my pic/link w/e it's called and look at my groups and find the d80 challenge group... those guys run a bi-weekly challenge with specific rules/deadlines... also if you post you are required to vote for a pic that's not yours... they seem to post pretty specific guidelines which is less intimidating than free range i think... but hey i've been on this site for like 3 weeks so i'm just shooting blanks here :)

Alight so I was thinking as I was about to get in the shower how I still hadn't done a self portrait and I was pretty much out of time. So here is my picture:

Here we go, pulling in at almost the last moment.

Self portraits taken in the mirror with your cell phone are sooooo sexy!

And the setup shot. Sigma DH-500 Mounted on camera, reflected off mirror behind camera (my triggers, stand and umbrellas get here friday!!!).

@yeahbone, I think you missed the deadline for the May Contest. My understanding was things had to be in by the end of the Month, but I don't really care... I leave it up to Auzigog.

@Auzigog, so how does the voting work now? Should we all just pick two images and then we can tally the votes at the end of the week?
Auzigog 10 years ago
@yeahbone. You're late, but I'm fine with letting you participate. I don't see any reason to be so stingy about it.

I propose that everyone has only one vote (since there are so few entries). We vote for a week until Saturday at 11:59pm. We'll tally the votes then.

Photoinference takes it

BUT -
Whoowl gets most daring
Harlinejoe gets person I want to party with
Oregonvelo gets the dark and disturbing award
MrMeeker gets the most creative way of avoiding the camera (amazingly taking this from metakephoto)
Westwinds gets the badass award
Mr. Photo gets the adaptive use of human lightstand award
Yeahboone gets the - hell I don't know what to say about that one
Ninja - coolest post-processing

Did I equally offend everyone?

Me? I get the lameasswhodidn'tevenpost award, along w/ a few others.
Hardlinejoe 10 years ago
My vote is for Photoinference.

I suddenly see the value of letting people vote for two. It makes it easier to figure second and third place. Oops? Well... It's a learning process.

@coupeowner: Nice "honorable mention" titles.

Anyone have ideas for next months contest? Maybe we should make photoinference pick. ;)

Whoowl 10 years ago
@metakephoto, Maybe I misunderstood but I thought that greenwoodimages said that he thought us having a monthly contest should be mentioned on the larger strobist blog. My point was that I am going to pull my image if our little local contest gets wider attention.

Hardlinejoe 10 years ago
My picture already is hanging up all over at work...I never should have given my Flickr name to my coworkers. A little wider attention won't kill me (who am I kidding, I'm a total attention whore).
boonerodriguez 10 years ago
lol... that's a great one for all over the office... i'd be mortified.

yeah, i vote for luke (photoinference). i'd be stoked to see another monthly contest / challenge soon. i like the one light idea, or perhaps another variation of the self portrait.
Auzigog 10 years ago
Let's use this thread to get some ideas for the June contest theme.
admin
LukeOlsen PRO 10 years ago
I think we should save the one light idea for an actual meet-up. I think it would be cool to walk around checking other people's setups in real-time.

That said. I have no ideas yet for a June contest.

Next Month Theme Ideas:

Nude Self Portraits..no wait "whoowls" already got that covered
Simple Object Theme (ie. something that everyone has access to)
Color Theme

Though I thought "self portrait" would of been easy enough for people to participate and we only got 9 people to do it. So I would keep the theme simple.
boonerodriguez 10 years ago
i agree with you metakepoopoo. making it accessible is key. use of monochromatic colors or extreme contrast might be a good challenge and really comes in handy for me often. otherwise use of lines or shapes might be an idea. or perhaps just overall simplicity.

a few examples that use off camera lighting:
contrasting colors
drebert teresa

simple use of lines
susan

symmetry:
teresa

lines and contrasting colors (orange and blue)
professional headshot

monochromatic w/ accents of color
josh & olga
