vega dance+lab (2nd floor)

k, i've been mulling over some ideas on coordinating the April 13th shoot (and remember these are just ideas, so please help me elaborate)

Group 1 - PW's Ch.1 & 2

Group 2 - PW's Ch.3 & 4

Group 3 - Ebay Remotes,Skyports and Canon Wireless

Group 4 - Nikon CLS

Group 5 - Setting up pdxstrobist group shot, behind the scenes, etc..

Please let us know if your interested in helping out with one or more of the following areas:

-Model Coordinator
-Moderate the Props/Equipment Table (that is, if we want to have one?) and possibly we can put the table in the same room as the ringflashes, so we could keep an eye on those too.

Cool. Is there a rough estimate on the number of photographers in each of these groups?

Hmmm.. No one has any ideas? Ok... I'll start. Place me into a pocket wizard group.

I'm curious to see if one or more groups are lopsided.

Either 7 groups with 4 photographers in each group
(or) 4 groups of 6

and i definitely want to have groups, so be prepared to collaborate on shots and help each other out.

Why not 6 of 5 or 5 of 6? I don't think every photographer (or model) will stay for the entire shoot. I know the PWs range precludes sharing of channels but what about CLS? Can two groups use CLS?

And for those who have both (CLS and PWs) or (Canon and PWs) placing them into a CLS only group implicitly states that they shouldn't use PWs.

I'll be the one walking around with birds flying around my head and a zombie glaze over my eyes, I feel lost and I'm not even there yet. HELP!
I'm sure once I get there I'll be able to fit in somewhere and figure out what's going on but WOW this seems complicated!!

I think i'm gonna pair everyone up..so there will be 14 groups..or actually every photographer for themself..and all hell will break loose, with only the strongest left to survive (j/k)

@PhotoInference: yeah 2 different groups can use CLS..there are 4 channels. So 1 group can use channel 1 & 2 and the other group would use the remaining 3 & 4 channel. I just think it would be nice if each group can use 2 channels (therefore 2 different setups within each group)

@westwindsphotography: dont worry about anthing, .i'm just trying to confuse the situation by thinking/planning ahead of time.

Ok. So it looks like this so far (please correct if in error). Those who use dual transmission means I placed you under pocket wizards. If you don't want that please note it. NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL GROUP BREAKDOWN. JUST A WORK IN PROGRESS. Also note that list only includes those photographers who are listed as coming to the April 13th Meetup/Photoshoot.

With the CLS group, if we're going to be shooting like Jill Greenberg, we need 6 strobes, a gridspot, 4 umbrellas, and a ringlight.

We did it during my studio lighting class today, I brought in a tearsheet and a few of my classmates and I figured out how to do it and shot it in about an hour.

The shot and info here:

If were shooting that CLS Greenberg setup with the ringlight..will we need to use a homemade ringlight with a nikon flash in it? So it would all be sync'd.

I like the idea of trying to recreate the lighting on a few "pro" photographers shots. Maybe create a couple of stations for that as well (in addition to ringlights, group shot, and whatever else you have brewing).

Oh, and don't forget that I have an extra set of ebay triggers w/ two receivers if anybody needs a way to go off-camera.

@coupeowner: yeah bring the extra set of triggers, you never know when you might need to use them or someone else...and i like the idea of having an area for a specific photography style in mind (ie. this month Jill Greenberg)

If some of the canon shooters need them pro photo supply has a couple to rent.

you might also send ballyhoo photography a message, He might have a few that he would be willing to share if you all are using Canon flashes, just make sure to mark/tag your gear.

I've got an extra ebay transmitter (and one receiver that I probably won't be using) if someone would like to jump on our channel and use the flashes we already have set up.

@metakephoto, feel free to arrange the groups so people who don't have lighting setups end up in the ebay group and coupeowner and I can lend them triggers.

And in case he forgets to mention it himself, sircoupe will be bringing pocket wizards. And I think he has some extra ebay triggers/receivers as well.

@oregonvelo - that's going to take a pitch black room right? Do you know if the windows are covered?

I have put in an order for good weather too, so maybe we can get outside a bit.

What about name tags? I like the idea, but I know there was some hesitation a few months ago. I would be happy to bring a few sheets of mailing labels that we could use.

@OregonVelo: I would prefer that we try this shot at another meetup, and then we can focus around this type of shot for a while. And I dont think there's curtains for the windows upstairs..

so who wants to bring the nametags?

Currently i'm planning on splitting up everyone within 5 groups of 6 photographers each. I'm assigning the Frequency channels to the groups, so no matter where you are during the day with your group, you wont be tripping other peoples frequencies. And also the fact of having 5 groups, we will have 5 locations to shoot at and rotate locations throughout the day.

Group 1: PW Ch1; Nikon CLS Ch.1
Group 2: PW Ch2; Nikon CLS Ch.2
Group 3: PW Ch3; Nikon CLS Ch.3
Group 4: PW Ch4; Nikon CLS Ch.4
Group 5: Ebay Remotes, Skyports, Etc

Also please remember that this event is for educational purposes, so please help out your fellow photographers. It's not a competition, you don't have to be cut throat to get the shot...It's for fun and hopefully you'll learn a little while your at the event.

With as many models as we seem to have this time around, do you invision a couple of shots being set up at a time by each group? Or do you see each group working together on a single shot?

If you want to send me your list (when you put it together) I can print the nametags w/ the group # and name (and I will bring a fat marker and a few blanks for any changes).

LukeOlsen is a group administrator LukeOlsen says:

I would like it if each photographer within a group decided their own shots with the other members of the group helping if needed. Of course if everyone in the group is trying to get the same "style" of shot (read Greenberg) than that is different. But I do think it is important for each photographer to do the setup themselves with as much of their equipment as possible.

Laughing Coyote Photography says:

I agree with Photoinference on this, I also think everyone should try and bring at least one idea for shooting along with them. Either lighting of a subject or posing but think a bit about this.

one cant really develop ones own style shooting what someone else sets up. (it is good for a visual set of notes but if you actually do the setup and think out the layout of your lights your shots will come out better)

coupeowner is a group administrator coupeowner says:

Excellent, that is what I was hoping for. I was thinking that 6 people limited to working on a single shot would be a little much, and lead to the models not getting utilized enough.

Looking forward to it!

I think within each group every photographer should use there own gear (unless you need to share gear to get a lighting setup accomplished). And in my opinion I think it's fine if your mimicking another persons setup within your group. It would be ridiculous if someone had a great lighting idea, not to try it out for yourself. But like it was said before, come to the event with an idea or two that you might be able to throw into the pot of ideas within your group.

Auzigog says:

@coupeowner: Could you print everyones screen name AND real name on the name tags? Actually, I just realized that would be difficult because you'd have to view everyones profile to see their full name. Then maybe we can just have sharpies next to the name tags, so people can write their real name. I feel silly when I call people by their screen name in person. Thanks!
ages ago (permalink)

view photostream

coupeowner is a group administrator coupeowner says:

One step ahead of you. I actually dug up as many real names as I could and printed those on the tags. A bunch I couldn't find a real names for, so you will have to write them on the tags yourselves.
