Can i get everyone to post what they sync there flashes with?
(ie. Pocket Wizard, Ebay Remotes, Nikon CLS, etc..) I'm trying to get a rough idea of how to split up the groups.

*and if you have Pocket Wizards, please state how many you have and if its the newer PW II's or the older transmitter/receiver type.

PW IIs. Maybe we can designate zones for four sets, with PW number channels posted on each wall? So each set "owns" a channel. Something like that.

Corded 530EXII (15ft), Slave 480 (Canons).

P.S. The cord is ETTL capable. Just FYI.

Poverty Wizards (ebay remotes) 4-channel (usually set on 1N)

BTW - I have a 2nd set of ebay remotes (backups) with two receivers if anybody needs to use them during the shoot. Also have a variety of cables so anybody w/out off-camera, can go off-camera for the day.

I know I need to update things, but I still run a PC cord to the powerpack. I have a hotshoe adapter too. That means anyone can just walk up and use the set-up no problem, but only one at a time. It also means that when I use other people's set-ups I'm always forced to barrow a transmitter for my Canon.

2 PW's, and a SHORT sync cable

Does anyone use the PW to 1/4" cable? I want to sync 3 White Lightning monolights at our next meet and currently i only have one 1/4" cable to PW.

@PhotoInference: you have 3 PW II's, right?
admin
LukeOlsen PRO 10 years ago
@metakephoto: Is that the cable that came with the PW? I have 3 or maybe 4 PW IIs (I'm thinking of this three light scenario right now).

Is anyone bringing a softbox? I have an interesting idea I would like to try of a dancer action photo.

metakephoto PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 10 years ago
@DaveWeav: I can bring 2 soft boxes, if you tell me more about your idea. You always seem to come up with great ideas.

@PhotoInference: Not the cords that come with the PW's, it's the one that goes into a 1/4" (think guitar cable size). Cause that's what my WL's use.

I'm thinking about shooting with the brick wall as the background with a spot on the wall. Then have the dancer in a mid air leap with the side light coming from camera left (dancer leaping in the direction of the light) and then adding a rim light from behind and camera right. If the background is a little distracting I might try to shoot fast enough to drop out the ambient light.

Hopefully there is a dancer that has long flowing hair or an outfit with fabric that will show movement. Also someone that has the stamina to leap enough times for me to get the shot!! :-)

@DaveWeav: I don't have a grid for my softbox, do you think all the spill will be fine in your shot? And maybe you should bring a black piece of fome core in case its a problem.
DaveWeav 10 years ago
@metakephoto: Actually that's my reason I think a softbox would be better. I think my shoot thru umbrella will spill to much light. I have never used a softbox before. Is there a better way to to get a soft directional light? I will take your suggestion and bring some black foam core.

Thanks

@OregonVelo: you should practice the shot at home first, to work out the kinks. And i'm up for coming over and figuring it out with you. Actually i'm sure several people would be up for meeting somewhere and trying this technique out before the April 13th shoot.

I guess first off, OregonVelo are you free this Sunday March 30th ??
admin
OregonVelo 10 years ago
Nope, sorry, not free on the 30th. I am not even sure how to go about shooting anything like this, camera or flash. This is one of the reasons I wanted to try it. Ken has a shot of Tara, but I think he cheated and PS 4 shots together.
admin
metakephoto PRO 10 years ago
@OregonVelo: Personally I would piece the shot together in Photoshop. Cause I think the room well be in for the shoot, will be too small (but feel free to prove me wrong) It would be alot easier to achieve this in a big open space. We should definitely try this at our May shoot (outside)...Or is it's nice on April 13th, we should try it outside the dance studio.

I don't need to do this as wide as the shot I attached is, I just thought one shot that appears to be a sequence of shots would be cool and it is something that I would like to learn how to do.

I am not sure if it would work as well outdoors due to the amount of light. I think the ambient light might overexpose a longer shot like this outside.

metakephoto PRO 10 years ago
I forgot about ambient...but i guess i was thinking about the non-strobist approach..just shoot it with available light and PS. I've been wanting to do some skateboard shots like this.

Shooting it indoors with strobes and no PS work seems like a pretty big challenge, we should setup a meetup this summer with the focus just on this type of shot.

@metakephoto- I would think that a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter from Radio Shack for $3 would solve your hook up problems. Go for the mono adapter with one black ring. Just a guess,--

I bought a splitter there for a small 1/8 headphone jack, and it worked great for firing two strobes from one PW. Does that make since?

@mmyhappypants: thanks for the suggestion..i really like your idea of splitting the wire for 2 strobes....off to radio shack i go :)

i'm hoping to have my flashes by the meet and will be Nikon CLS with 2 SB-600's, will bring my ringlight as well. I'm so excited to try out what I've seen you all doing.
DaveWeav 10 years ago
@metakephoto- Let me know if you would ever like to get together for some skateboard shots. I have been wanting to do that as well. Have you ever been to department of skate?
The_Nothing 10 years ago
@metakephoto: i have the WhiteLightning cable from FlashZebra. I use it for my skyports to Ultra600, so it'll work with PWs. I've tried adapters, and they just don't work

that said
I have skyports (sender and reciever)
two optical slaves
dansana 10 years ago
I use PWs - 3 x PW 2plus(4 chan) and 1 multimax (16 chan)

@OregonVelo/@metakephoto - There's a strobist artical on that shot at:

If you are up for colaboration on this technique - pls call on me.

I sync through CLS on a D70s.

Not to many people here use CLS. It's a fantastic system.

I use the canon ste2 for 2 and slaves for the other 2
Whoowl 10 years ago
Not to split hairs but I use Nikon Advance Wireless Lighting (AWL) which is a component of Nikon CLS to trigger my remote speedlights. I am currently using an SU-800, SB-800, and SB-600.

It's just a pet peeve of mine but CLS is not the same as AWL, and often people are convinced that using remote flashes on Nikon is limiting because they don't know how to use just AWL and not full on CLS.

Poverty wizards- Cactus V2s for my 285 and Lancerlight as a slave-> are slaves kosher for strobist meets?
Jimmy, they are, but might want to limit the number of lights that are using them as everyone and there brother is going to trigger them.

@Whoowl: If I understand your peeve, I guess I am actually using AWL. I use a D80 with my SB800 and SB600 with everything on manual so I control the light, not the CLS TTL. I didn't realize it wasn't all just called CLS.
admin
metakephoto PRO 10 years ago
@Whoowl: yeah i didnt realize that either..i just thought CLS was the Nikon Wireless system. I too mainly shoot the SB800's in manual mode when shooting wireless.

Ordered skyports (1 transmitter, 1 receiver). If they don't come in time, then Nikon AWL.
not sure where you ordered them from but I found that prophoto supply had them for the same price as all the online places with no shipping.. /shrug..
The_Nothing 10 years ago
agreed. hopefully PPS ordered more since I picked mine up though, I got the last set - display
I am sure that they have sevral times when I bought mine in there there were about 10 boxed units on the shelf... LOL ..

I called Prophoto a few days ago, and they said they only had one receiver left. Allegedly, mine will come by next Friday..
