I just went to the top and counted to 18. I'll be on the waiting list? Do models (Tara) count as slots?

Juliana Tobon (sick during last meet) has expressed interest as a photographer, and Jennifer Robin as a model. Is it too late for them too?

I just got the "I'll do it" from Jennifer Robin. Now she would be going as a model, and hopefully additional models are good even if you don't absolutely need them. And hopefully models don't count as shooters, but this whole mysterious thing is your gig so I guess we'll just wait and see what happens as your plan unfolds. From what I remember about the Vega dance studio is that it has wood floors, 1 huge wall of mirrors, 1 large wall of grafitti, 1 brick wall (and i believe 1 brick wall painted silver, but i could be wrong on that one), and 1 large red velvet curtain in front of the kitchen, plus there's a stairwell and several support colums throught the room.

Anyhow, i wanna try to and do a little pre-planning on the lighting setups. Mainly some ideas to shoot with the wall of mirror and the group shot of the Sugar Q burlesque Troupe (which includes 7 dancers)

Also if anyone has a good idea on planning the day, please let us know. Currently we have 11+ models that are attending.

Cool. Is this studio on street level? And do you remember if the ceiling had pipes (or other things) to clamp strobes too?
admin
coupeowner Posted 10 years ago. Edited by coupeowner (admin) 10 years ago
Just brainstorming, but how about small groups (3 photographers?) working on a list of pre-assigned shots (possibly just trying to copy/emulate several provided shots), and rotate through different stations every hour. Not to kill freedom of creativity, but start with the goal of getting the assigned shot, then tweek it as you wish. Will the troupe be divided up, or kept together? I could see a couple of photo groups assigned to the troupe if we kept them together.
admin
metakephoto PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 10 years ago
@PhotoInference: The studio is on the 2nd floor and I can't remember what the ceiling is like, but it can't hurt to bring a clamp or two.

@coupeowner: We can keep the Sugar Q together as a group, but i thought it would be fun to do some individual shots first. It's really up to us, that's why i want to brainstorm with you guys beforehand on how we should approach this.
admin
coupeowner Posted 10 years ago. Edited by coupeowner (admin) 10 years ago
Alright, I must have slept at a Holiday Inn last night. I came up with some more thoughts.

Some rough ideas for assigned shots:

1) A shot from above, looking down on model on wood floor (although it looks like the ceiling is fairly low from the pictures on the website)
2) Shot along the brick wall, side lighted and hair light
3) Ringlights galore at one station (everyone bring their homemade ringlight/catchlight setups)
4) Dance Troupe
5) Mirror? Drawing a blank on this one

Maybe everyone could post their ideas, and maybe even a shot they would hope to create. Pick the best variety from them, then make those the assigned shots.

Break the photographers into groups ahead of time, trying for one experienced person in each group. As there are more stations than slots to shoot, we could put a signup sheet at each station with the assigned shot, and let the groups sign up for the one-hour slots. Also let the models sign up for slots, based on on what they want to end up with.

**i like coupeowner's idea for setting up a Ringlight station with everyones version of their homemade ringlight/catchlight setups. And if you have the ABR800 bring those too. This area would be all about testing out the different types of ring lights. Plus there's a main lobby that's painted light blue that i'm hoping we can use too as the ringlight headquarters.

The only thing about this is that we probably need someone there to watch the equipment at all times. So i guess we can designate one person in each group to watch the gear as we shift setups. Or i remember at the seattle strobist shoot this past January, they made an impromptu sign out sheet for props, where you would have to leave your license to check something out and one person monitored the checkout table.

Depending on how many dancers are there, it could be interesting to practice lighting a larger group of subjects. That might also be a pain to organize, though.

I'm really excited for this shoot. I'll try to think of ideas over the next couple days.

I'm in! Sounds GREAT!!
thinkable straw [deleted] 10 years ago
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet, but the floor COULD be a problem. If anyone has strobes that are firing close to where the camera is from or on camera, that floor is going to create some pretty nasty reflections onto the walls behind it. I learned that the hard way when shooting basketball once.

HOWEVER!

That reflective surface can be used to the shooters advantage if a back light it used, you can create halo's with it and work a semi-two-plane-highlight-looking-i-don't-know-what-you-call-it-shtick.

But yeah, 11+ models?!?! HOLY COW!!!!

this is going to be GREAT!

I am in the process of finishing my custom ring light, so I'll be sure to bring that if we do have a ringlight station, or just in general it should be cool to have there:D

I'd love to be there but I should relinquish any spot I'd take to someone who is more prepared.

I'm always the one that shoots ambient while I peek at everyone's setup and learn things to practice at home where my cords and slow setup won't get in the way. :)

Besides, there is a waiting list already. Looking forward to May, ya'll!

@StereoBlind: You should come to this shoot, i'm trying to figure out the logistics right now, currently i'm planning on having 3 different stations/setups that photographers will rotate through and experiment with lights.
I'm bringing 3 White Lightning Monolights and people will be able to shoot with it via Pocket Wizard one at a time (so you'll be able to have a chance to put the pocket wizard on your camera and shoot).
Also Kenneth Barton is bringing his power pack and lights for another setup (which is hardwired, so you'll just have to hook the sync cord to your camera and fire away, once again one photographer at a time)
And there's gonna be a ringlight station that you'll be able to experiment with various different homemade ringlights and ABR Ringflashes.

and the rest of it, i have no clue how i'm gonna organize it..hopefully it'll just fall into place...

coupeowner 10 years ago
Will we also be able to come up w/ our own shots? Or are we sticking to the three stations? Are there classes being held while we are there?

On a side note. I found 1" x 2.75" waterproof labels at Office Depot. They are made of some poly material as opposed to paper. They don't seem to leave any residue when you pull them off either. I have labeled everything I have w/them and still have several sheets left over if anybody is interested. Takes a laser printer for the ink to be waterproof.

Do you think bringing monolights and power packs and setting up stations is the right or wrong thing to do?? Should we keep things simple and just use our hand held flashes?

Though i'm still planning on having a ringlight station.

I agree, I would rather not use other peoples lights. I don't feel like I am learning anything by using something that I won't have access to in the future. Just my .02
thinkable straw [deleted] 10 years ago
@metake - Than I won't bring it, it would have been better suited for the February meetup.
admin
coupeowner 10 years ago
@metake - no big deal, I was just wondering how many people were going to be coming and going during the day.

I would love a short intro to the monolights and powerpacks - and even watching them in use a bit. But I don't really feel the need to take them on just yet. I have a small softbox and a shoot-thru umbrella that I am hoping to work with, and feel like I will have my hands full playing with those. I'm open to anything though. The ringlight station will be cool regardless.

@Mr. Meeker: You should still bring it if you plan on using it. I would really like to see what shots you can get using it. My two cents; I really like the tilt effects.
@coupeowner: I agree. Just because I'm not using a particular piece of equipment doesn't mean I don't want to see what can be done with them. I'll be playing around with a softbox too.

sounds good, i'll just bring equipment that i want to shoot with.

And I still plan on having a ringflash area setup, where everyone can bring there versions of the ringflash for people to try.

Does anyone have the moon unit for the ABR800 ringflash? Cause i've been interested in trying one out. I remember someone at the Dec. meetup over at Smashbox Studios had the large moon unit and was shooting in the hallway.

I wouldn't mind one bay pre-setup. I am the oppisite of others. I like trying other equipement so I can understnad it better. Then I can decide if it is something that I need. That is why I like ProPhoto Supply. Rent before you buy and rent cheap.

Also we have plenty of people that have very little equipment. This will give the a chance to mix things up.

metakephoto PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 10 years ago
The one bay pre-set up this time around will be the ringflash area. I'm planning on bringing my ABR800 ringflash and setting it up on a light stand or tripod for people to shoot through. And possibly Luke/PhotoInference might bring his too (I know he has a 20 degree grid for his, which might be fun to check out)

I'm interested in seeing the variances between all the homemade ring flashes, so far the outcome looks great.
admin
LukeOlsen PRO 10 years ago
Yeah. I'll bring mine too (with the grid). I'm still planning my shots out so I'm not sure if I'll be needing it for something. I like the fact that I can use the ABR in a non ring light mode. I will definitely be needing it for any group shots.

We should try to pull off the "Jill Greenburg" effect with the ABR, 2 lights bounced into umbrellas (camera left and camera right), 2 rim lights, hair light and background light...i'm sure i could be wrong on the setup, but we should try it anyhow...

now all we need to get is some crying babies, large zoo animals or a celebrity to pose for us on seamless paper.

I have a custom ring light that I would have no problem bringing if it's wanted. It's fairly large though, I would say 4 feet or so wide, then around 4-6 feet tall. It has18 lights on it. Looks like 2 umbrellas at each side of the camera, similar level as the subject, a ringlight directly in front, hard kickers on each side and the background light is what you need.

The umbrellas create even light with the ringlight filling anything in and creating the glossy sheen.

@metakephoto: I think I am going to try and recreate the multiple exposure flash look with the repeating flash mode on my SB-800, however, I am concerned about the limit to only 1/8th power in this mode.

Any chance I can borrow a white-lightning for my attempt if I don't have enough power? If not, I can probably borrow a couple UZ800s, and one UZ1600 to bring to the shoot or just shoot at ISO3200 of something.

Also, do you know how fast the optical sync will operate on the white-lightnings? If you think it won't trigger that fast, I can make a sync cord for them between the SB800 and the WL.

@Whoowl: I might bring my WL's (but i wouldnt count on it), currently i'm leaning to only bringing my SB800's and keeping things simple for myself (besides trying to replicate the Jill Greenberg lighting) Which i'm hoping to put myself in a group of Nikon CLS people to achieve that.

OregonVelo 10 years ago
@whoowl... I am also going to be trying to recreate the multiple exposure flash look. Maybe we can work together on it. I think we can approach it two ways depending on what we want. I would like to try both ways too. One is the the way that most people go for (i think), the second is more of a manual way with PW's and a long exposure.
