Poms

maddog. 7:46am, 27 May 2006
Corin helped raise the subject of Pommieness in FCU and I toyed with the idea of starting the Pommie Appreciation Directive group.

Then I realised I spend far too much fucking time on here and there is no need for any more poxy groups.

But only after jotting down a group description thus:

This is just a wee group designed to enhance relations between Britain and the Rest Of The World.

Traditionally, Poms have improved life on the planet and have spread the good word near and far. Not enough people appreciate this.

London is so open-armed that it's hard to find a Pom with a long-standing Pommie background and this practice has spread with great success across the country. How can you not feel empathy with a beautiful country that welcomes everyone into it's bosom.

And sports-wise, England currently hold the Rugby World Cup after beating off the opposition, a magnificent feat watched by thirty-eight blokes in blazers from Hertfordshire. In football England truly reign supreme and everyone knows England have the exciting prospect of gaining a second nearly-successive World Cup victory in Germany, where England won another war back in the 1940s.

The pubs in England are the world's best despite the heavy financial penalties imposed if you go to the bar.

English girls are extremely attractive. English blokes sing well when they are drunk and are polite and gentlemanly.

Anyone who dislikes life in Britain usually was born here and doesn't realise its actually pretty damn good. Even the hooligans have entertainment value. As long as you keep your distance.

The British government are dodgy and upset the media and protest groups just like every other democratic government in the world but at least there's elections every few years so you can vote 'em out and replace them with another similar bunch of pen-pushers who have no idea of the real world.

The English generally don't like the USA as a concept after the new Western power came over and won the war for them a long time ago. It's nothing personal, America's just a bit big and scary and easy to take the piss out of.

The National Health Service is free here and there isn't enough space to explain the irony, but you should have no fear of dying here.

The media is exciting to watch and read and newspapers easily catagorised into tabloid and broadsheet. Tabloid papers are styles have become so popular that broadsheets have jumped on the bandwagon, following that old credo that "Less is More".

I should point out that I love it here and that England's a great place. It's very English to take the piss out of yourself.

sniff. that's beautiful, man.

I feel homesick. But you're right. You do spend too much time on here.

i like america, i just dislike living in L.A. as much as betsy hates london.

i have a fear of dying here. not in a "lose your life" way, but a "oh god i will be stuck here until my last breath won't i?"

i will one day travel to england, but so far, most people from there have told me not to bother. wtf?

I want to live in Key West forever. Fucktard Kyle changed his mind and won't let me move in with him for the summer.

Who cares? I hate love.

But I still love Key West.
pixiepie 12 years ago
Aw shucks, there's a lot of love in the room.

London is a cool place to visit but not to live. If anyone (with a sense of humour) is interested, try reading Bill Bryson's Notes From a Small Island for an outsiders view of living in Blightly.

In the meantime, you can all come & stay at mine

Ithaca weather is probably like England's, only colder, because of the lake effect. It rains constantly, then snows, then ices, then rains and freezes.

It's like awesome cool that the Gulf Stream runs right past Key West (through the Straits of Florida) travels north and ends up wrapping itself around your little island home.

Like we're connected. By a warm current of water. Coooooool

Can I put in a little word about how fab Wales is???
Where the men are men and sheep are glad of it !

Seriously... Welsh men look lush in their little rugby shorts and the women have a genetic inheritance that make them always look youthful.
That's true - I am really 73

I thought you smelled a bit off.

My ancestors were Welsh. They raided castles, stole sheep, and took one-a-day vitamins.

I just want you all to know that it doesn't matter where you're from, Americans will still stereotype you by foreign commericals.
mlizzy Posted 12 years ago. Edited by mlizzy (member) 12 years ago
i can sympathize with betsy's hate of london - i used to hate L. A. sooooooo much - but then things changed and i don't hate it as much- only when I'm sitting in traffic on the 405, the 10, the 101, the feckin'134.
If you can get out of the city now and then , it makes it more bearable the rest o the time.
@Antomic - i agree - don't let me spend my last breath in L.A.

Maddog, why are you so wise?
People will always complain if they don't know any different

mliz and i should drive just outside L.A., drop trou and flip the bird just before taking a deep breath and snuffing it.

or betsy can move here, and we can move to london.
maddog. 12 years ago
Fras, you know why I'm wise. It's all the wisdom potion I consume, fresh from the wisdom tree...

betsymartian 12 years ago
well if it's full of Londoners I'm not going.
squacco 12 years ago
Come back to the North West, Betsy. Londoners are banned from here.
betsymartian 12 years ago
I'm trying. Find me a job and I'm there. None of the law firms up there seem to be hiring. :(
squacco 12 years ago
I could have some of their existing staff murdered for you if that would help?
betsymartian 12 years ago
hmmm... it might indeed... I think it'd cause a fuss though, if librarians were to start to die willy-nilly, it's not the easiest of professions to make it look accidental. Lots of bookcases falling on people I suppose...

Collins:
yak: (slang) noun. 1. noisy, continuous, trivial talk - 2. chatter or talk in this way (-kka)

And thankyou for joining us in dictionary corner this afternoon.
