*Update*
OK, we are shooting the residents on June 18th, starting at 5:30. That means we need to be there BEFORE that so that we can set up, get things ready and do some practice photos and the like. Those that can come and help out, please say so. I will keep a running list of those helping out. I would like to remind everyone that this is pretty important to our group, and if you are in anyway able to help, please do so.
So, here is the list of those going to be there. If for some reason you cant come, please let me know so I can remove your name.

Remember, this is a learning experience for us too. If you've never done this sort of thing then please come.

OK, as most of you know, we have been having our meetings at Primrose. This has been a great deal, seeing they provide us drinks and food. Now, we need to give back.
The plan is to take a portrait of each of the residents that want photos, and then donate prints to Primrose to hang up in their building. How and when is what we need to decide now.

Jakes mom had suggested that Thursday, June 18th, would be a great day because there is a car show and most of the residents should be there. This would be an issue for those of us that work during the day, as well as trying to share the space with the car show and what not. I am thinking a weekend would be better. Any ideas?

As for the printing, I would like to start a "primrose printing fund" and have people donate to it rather than take from our group money. The cost for prints isnt much. If everyone would dontate half of what they used to spend on food and drinks when we were meeting other places, then we would have more than enough.

So there it is, we need to talk this over and get it settled by the May meeting. In fact, I would like to have a set date well before the end of the month so we can let Primrose know and they can plan on their end.
So, lets get cracken!

I dunno about the 'whole family' portion... where do you cut off 'whole family'? Trying to manage that many potential people (their kids, grand-kids, possible great-grand-kids, johnny from down the block since he was mostly family anyway... oh plus his family etc.) for one or two shots might be a little tough. Plus trying to cram everyone into a nice little nook or whatever we were thinking, could be another sticky situation. I'd be good with them, and possibly their pets... since lighting that many extras might be a hassle for those of us whom don't have the equipment. Just throwing that out there.

as a part of the Norther Lights Camera Club, out of Spooner WI, we did a shoot at the nursing home. all the residents that wanted a portrait, got it and there were a few that had their children come, many had their spouses and one of them had their spouse bring their furry friend (dog). We didn't say anything about "family is included" and so there were a small few that did that...it worked out great.
Each of the residents got a print out of their portrait (one of the shots taken) and placed in a Valentines day card and the rest of the images were put on a disc and the nursing home could make a copy or so, for whoever wanted it. Many had prints made for their family members...anyway, it worked out real nice.
We did the shoot on a Sat. and we set up two hours prior to the start so we could figure out the WB so we would not use a flash as that can be stressful to some.

my availability for June is scattered...when a date is picked, I will know if I can make it or not.

I will most likely be available on the 18th or the weekend before or after, but not the weekend of the 27th due to Park Point Art Fair (along with a few others.)

We could, if we wanted to, say that Primrose gets a free 8x10 of the individual resident, and the resident gets a free 5x7 of their choice, and open it up to family members to join in and potentially purchase extra prints.

Just a thought.

I like the idea of setting it up with natural light and no strobes.
fallfaceforward 9 years ago
i won't be partcipating in this but had a thought: as there will be quite a few of you who will be participating, it might work well to set up a couple "studio" spaces through out Primrose. That way you guys can all split up into smaller groups, and space wouldn't be so crowded.

I think this is a lovely idea that you're putting together and i'd like to chip in $20 towards prints for the residents.

That 2nd floor lobby area has some huge windows, you could easily have 3 if not 4 portraits happening at the same time.

JustinSinks 9 years ago
Brian, I like your idea.
And yes, the plan is to have a few different areas to shoot in. There are some pretty neat areas there, one being the ice cream shop. Though, i dont think there is much natural light in there...

As for the date, Im pushing for the weekend. It doesnt have to be in June, in could be in July, or August. How ever long it takes to get all the details worked out and as much people available.

Also, I was thinking it would be cool to have a MUA on hand, doing some light makeup for residents. Anyone know of anyone that may donate time/makeup? I think that would really make the ladies feel special.

i go to meetings. or i have been known to go to meetings. i have never attended at primrose, nor do i know anything about primrose.

however.

i will help. and have no qualifications (that is... no reservations...)

say when. say where.
Anna Merritt 9 years ago
I don't know anything about Primrose either...the one we did in Spooner...they had people doing makeup an hair and some of the employees actually had old time hats, scarves, mink collar...it was a lot of fun...one of the shots I took the womans family used to announce her 93 birthday party...Is Primrose like a nursing home? When it was talked about the car show...i started to second guess...Anna

Primrose is a retirement home that also has assisted living. It's a pretty nice place.

I like the idea with the prints Brian, and I think that 2nd floor area is perfect for setting up for the window light. We can move everything around and really open it up.
If we have multiple areas setup to shoot, how do we decide which residents go to which setup? I bet we could have it all going on in that room.

I'll chip in $20 as well.

being a former Mary Kay rep. i have MUA experience and would be willing to volunteer my time and make up.

um... i don't really have any weekends open in June though.
QuietDelusions 9 years ago
Well, I don't have a lot I can contribute (other than a pair of extra hands), but if this is set up on a day I'm free, I'd love to come. -Especially- if someone there wouldn't mind teaching me a thing or two! Otherwise, I'm good with standing back and observing.

JustinSinks 9 years ago
Good point QuiteDelusions, this is also meant to be a learning experience for us. So yes, do please come and ask questions and get some hands on. And Im sure the more of us that are there, the smoother it will go.

I was acutally thinkng of pushing this off until July or so. It would be better for me that way, I wont be here most of June.
And thanks for offering Natalie!
And thanks everyone else for offering to lend a hand or donations.

For anyone that has yet to come to a meeting at Primrose (or to any meeting for that matter), I urge you to come to the May meeting.
tina_p0608 9 years ago
just my 2 cents.
The residents at Primrose are independant.
So on that note I would not get to excited about putting makeup on them. I would simply ask them if they would someone to do it. If so, please remember to keep it light. Their skin is very different.
Im sure most of them will come ready if they know they are getting their picture taken.

HOLD ON!

Apparently, we must do it on June 18th. My mom already started advertising for the car show/photo day. It would be a huge inconvenience to change the date now. That being said, who thinks they can help?
I'm really sorry about this. We never finalized anything, she went ahead and scheduled it.

I will be there for sure. I would love to take some candid shots also- those are always fun (I take LOTS of photos of my Grandparents)...Maybe some candid shots during the car show would be cool. For the portraits, I have no lights- but would love to help out with the shoot. I'm available whenever.

Ok, thanks for the update. Ill be there as soon as I can on Thursday.
Anyone else able to come and help?

I will most likely be there, i have some very cheap e-bay lights if we need them, they are not the best but would get the job done.
admin
JustinSinks 9 years ago
Thanks justin! I think we are going to try and work with window lighting and reflectors. But, I for one will have my lights in the jeep JUST in case. ;)
And sweet nostalgicearth (forgot your name again... sorry!), candids would be cool.
And Im guessing that means no, you wont be there shawn?
So, who else will be there?

so what have the Primrose residents been told about this?
enchanted afternoon [deleted] 9 years ago
I like the idea of the car show at the same time of the shoot. Could possibly get some real good shots of the "ooo-ing and awe-ing" over the cars.

I'll put $20 towards printing.

I'm unsure if I'll be able to make it however.

JustinSinks 9 years ago
They have been told we will be there. There are also posters and postcards everywhere saying we are going to be there taking photos.
Noreeyay 9 years ago
If you guys need an extra I think I'm free Thursday. I also have 42" & 30" 5-1 reflectors and umbrellas I can throw in the mix. I also have a portable backdrop set up if anyone wanted to use it. I prefer to just shoot in the environment but am game for whatever.
admin
HBRstudios 9 years ago
We were going to try and make all of them natural light images using the facility as a backdrop, but I am going to be bringing a black paper backdrop and stand as well, just in case.

I will also bring my studio lighting and equipment on the chance we decide that it just won't work well.

So you don't need to bring anything but your camera, Nora -- but, thanx, and we appreciate the offer!

We may need to have another studio in a separate room for those residents in the assisted living facility. That way they don't have to make a long trek. Tomorrow I'm going to Primrose to sort out some things and I'll update you guys then.

Hey every one, I am sorry to say that i won't be able to make it on Thursday. My wife got me tickets to the fight at grandmas for fathers day. Sorry again, but let me know if you need any thing i have , camera lights or what not.

There is a chance for storms on Thursday, and I don't think they're gonna bring their nice cars if it pours. Gotta hope for the sun.

We were thinking today to use a bookcase or a fireplace as a background to add more environment to the pictures as opposed to a plain one. That way if another person wants to jump in the shot there's room. The 1st floor looks the most promising. Probably will have to use a light for them.

In order to comfortably get everyone through we should do 2 studios: one in the corner of the front lobby with the bookcase, and the other in the fireplace room. The fireplace room would cater more to the assisted living wing of the building.

Does that sound like a horrible idea? We could try the upstairs room original plan, but half the residents probably wouldn't go up there for it.

All the residents have been given a form that they will fill out and give to us. We'll have to figure a way to organize the photos so we can be certain to match the right person. Massive Photoshop session afterwards?
admin
HBRstudios Posted 9 years ago. Edited by HBRstudios (admin) 9 years ago
Sounds fine and dandy. To match up names with images, each of us has to keep a record of the names in the order we took them for each card we shoot. Imbed the names in the IPTC data for those images so they are permanently attached and then you only have to use the list but once after downloading.

If you don't know about IPTC, in CSx go under the "file" heading down to "file info" and enter it in the "title" or the "caption" area. I don't know if Elements will let you do it, nor do I know how in Capter NX, but my guess is you can in both.

So, i know im new here but i'm thinkin of hopping on board if no one has any objections, also how many people are gonna be there shooting?

I will not be able to come and play MUA tomorrow. I'll be working.

I still do plan to contribute $20 towards prints for the residents. I'll cross my fingers for sun!! Have fun!

You are more than welcome to come and shoot/help out. If you want to shoot, you will get your chance.
You too , hope to see you there.
Thanks for the update Jake, sounds good.
And good idea Brian.
You will be missed Nat!
So, did we ever find out if Primrose was doing the printing Jake? I think your mom had said something about it.

THIS IS TOMORROW, any one else want to come? Any other ideas?
Please remember to get there as soon as you can. We will need to be set up and ready by 5:30.
thanks everyone!
