Umm yes:)

1. Unplug the power to your computer.
2. Figure out how to take the cover off your tower's case
3. Locate current RAM (will look like the one's you purchased)
4. Remove old RAM (or add new ram to old RAM is you have enough available expansion slots)
tip...there will be tabs on both sides of the old installed RAM chip, push them outward and the RAM will fall forward and you can remove it. The new Ram will go in at the same angel and you will push it up and forward to click it into place.
5. install new RAM
6. Plug the power back in and fire up the computer to make sure there are no errors. Right click on the My Computer icon and go to properties. Look to the bottom right of that window and see if the RAM size is larger than before. i.e. before it said 1.0GB of RAM, now it should say 2.0GB of ram if you added 1GB.
7. if everything seems fine, shut the PC down, unplug the power, put the case cover back on and fire the computer back up.

Hopefully I didn't confuse you any more.

Great directions, Shawn. Something to keep in mind as well, if you already have 2 sticks in there, and there are 4 slots, you'll want to install similar sticks in the sockets in pairs. In other words, move the 2 old ones next to each other, and install the 2 new ones next to each other.

As with Shawn, I hope I didn't confuse you any more.

One thing shawn didnt say, TURN OFF your computer, make sure its turned off, not in hibernation.
admin
Unplugging the power will do that.

No, if its in hibernation, the computer is powered off. I leave my laptop in hibernation all the time. But if you change ram out while its in hibernation, it causes havoc when you boot up.

Your laptop also has a battery, desktops don't, unpluging it will insure that is for sure off.

Hold on a second.... desktops don't have batteries?

Hibernation (which is not the same as sleep mode) can be done on any windows computer with a battery or not. Hibernation does not use power at all and the computer can be completely removed from a power source. Though, when powered back on, the computer resumes where you left off. And if the ram is different than when it was before, it will cause a major crash.

When I say desktop doesn't have a battery I mean one that can power the computer. There is a battery on the mobo, mines dead haha so my clock never says the right time.

Sorry justin I mistook hibernate with sleep. My aplogizes.

I hope you grounded yourself before touching the innerds of the computer. Static electricity is really bad for computer hardware and northern Minnesotan winters don't help at all either.

How much RAM do you have now?

Im always grounded....

I have special boots that float me 3 inches above the ground at all times, so nothing ever has a path to ground through me.

3 inches? Thats it? Come to superior, I have something that could make a path no problem lol.
EDIT
before anyone takes that way out of context, im talking electricity here!
brandonransom 9 years ago
Well yeah, when I'm on a transmitter, I levitate myself in a prone position 6 feet off the ground, and wear my 150,000 VAC tested rubber gloves. I'm just talking about when I'm working on a computer, or similar.
